Overlooking San Nicolas Harbor and all
sea lane approaches are two television ca-

tain a constant, twenty-four-hour, watch
for tankers destined for Lago Once located

MECHANICAL-RIGGERS were
responsible for picking up the
spiral steps and placing them on
top of the signal tower. The en-
tire unit with forty-three steps
and two landings is thirty-three
feet high and weighs 5000
pounds. The unit was fabricated
in the Main Shops. The two ca-

mounted on top, 110 feet up.

Savaneta Marine Groups Highlight

Recent Tours Through Refinery

The family and guest tour pro-
gram, always a successful venture
and doubly so during the summer
months, entertained its 44,064
guest as of Oct. 31, according to
Tour Leader Severiano Luydens of
the Public Relations Department.
Included in the 44,000-plus vis-
itors were weekly groups of Royal
Dutch Marines totaling 250 men
who toured Lago this summer. For
many of the Marines, it was their
first experience in an oil refinery.
Mechanical Shops held a lot of
interest for the military visitors
as many were tradesmen in civilian
life. Also included in the tour
schedule were visits to the Com-
bination Units, the laboratory, and
office buildings. Highlight of the
tour came when the groups visited
the cold storage rooms. After
spending nearly two hours in the
sun, the cold rooms provided a
welcome relief for the Marines,
many of whom were winter sport
enthusiasts.
Typical questions asked by the
young men were: "What about
costs of operation, storage facili-
ties, number of employees, payroll,
and the source of your supply?"
All came away from the tour
amazed by the size of the refinery
and the maze of pipe lines neces-
sary for such an operation.
The first family tour took place
nearly eleven years ago Dec. 8,
1952. Seven years later in 1959,
Lago had welcomed its 25,000th
visitor and now in 1963, only four
years later, the company is await-
ing its 50,000th visitor.
At the outset of the Public Rel-
ations Department tour program,
cards were mailed to each em-
ployee inviting him to name a con-
venient date for his family to tour
Lago and also requesting the em-
ployee to name the language the
tour should be conducted in. Tours
are now conducted on an "on call"

Plant To Be Constructed
Esso Standard Fertilizer and Che-
micil Company, Inc. IPhilippines ,
has selected C. F Braun & Company,
Alhtmbra, California, to design and
construct a complete fertilizer plant
in Bataan. Republic of the Philip-
pines. The project will include marine
as well as manufacturing facilities.
Manufacturing units will Include
ammonia, urea, sulfulic acid, phos-
photic acid, normal super phosphate
and complex fertilizer units. The pro-
ject will provide a full line of com-
plete fertilizers needed for Philippine
requirements.

ployees." The airline president cited
the industrial progress that has re-

At the National Safety Congress,
sponsored every year by the Nat-
ional Safety Council, Mr. O'Brien and
Mr. Croes attended sessions that
dealt with fire and its causes, tech-
niques of safety training, electrical
hazards, and a series of discussions
on the evaluation of safety programs.
They heard other formal addresses,
one which was delivered by Stanley
Learned, president of Phillips Pet-
roleum Company.
The two Lago representatives met
men who supply information and
equipment pertaining to safety, met
others with like petroleum and ref-
ining responsibilities, and held dis-
cussions with Standard Oil Company

Safety and Suggestion

Conferences in Chicago
Lago was represented at two con-
ferences in Chicago recently, and
undoubtedly many of the company's
thousands of employees will benefit
from the learning of E. M. O'Brien
and Maximo Croes, both of the In-
dustrial Relations Department
Mr. O'Bien, safety advisor, and
Mr. Cioes. Coin-Your -Idea secretary
and acting safety program coordi-
nator, attended the annual National
Safety Congress, and Mr. Cioes, in
addition, attended ; conference of
the National Association of Sugges-
tion Systems
Mr Croes was present during the
annual three-day business meeting
of the NASS, attended by some 900
delegates from all sections of the
United States and Canada. Mr Croes
was the only delegate from the Ca-
ribbean and was singled out as the
person who had travelled the farth-
