Century and One-Half of Lago Service Represented in Five Retiring Employees Group Comprises Four Thirty- Year Men Including C.F.L. Ponson, Whose Career Started in 1926 If ever a group of retiring employees could be referred to as out- standing, the group retiring Sept. 1 merits the accolade. In lengths of service, the group includes four men with over thirty years of service, and one who is among Lago's longest service employees. Together, the five retiring employees represent 153 years of service. Cipriano F. L. Ponson of the Mechanical Department is one of the men who will leave Lago Sept. 1. He has over thirty-seven years of ser- vice and is one of Lago's longest service employees. (The two employees with the longest service are Jose M. Kock of Mechanical-Paint and B. F. Dirksz of Technical-Laboratories. Both men began their careers early in the 1925.) Mr. Ponson's employ started in June, 1926, with the Esso Transport- ation Company. In January, 1927, he transferred to Mechanical-Masons and Insulators, where he remained for the next thirty-six years. His first assignment after laborer was helper second class. He progressed through the helper and tradesman levels and was promoted to mason A in Feb- ruary, 1939. This promotion was fol- lowed by another in April, 1940, to subforeman A. He was made Mason Craft foreman in August, 1950, and Yard Craft foreman in June, 1961. Three others with thirty or more years are Pius J. Geerman, Francis- co L. Navas and Nemecio Kock, all of the Mechanical Department. The three will retire on the eve of their sixtieth birthday, which occurs in September for all of them. Mr. Geerman has over thirty-three years of service, all in the Mechani- cal Department. Early assignments were as a laborer and mechanical helper. He was promoted to laborer B in October, 1941, and again pro- moted in December, 1942, this time to sandblaster, his present position. Mr. Navas has over thirty-two years of service. He, too, has had all of his service in the Mechanical De- partment. He started as a laborer and transferred to the Pipe Craft as a pipefitter helper B in May, 1936. Promotions took him through the pipefitter categories to pipefitter A, the position he presently holds. Mr. Kock has over thirty and one- half years of Lago service. Except H. H. Nixon C. F. L. Ponson a__*_Rja N. Kock P. J. Geerman for a brief period of employ in the Yard Craft, Mr. Kock's service has been in Mechanical -Machinist. He was promoted to a tradesman third class in January, 1936. He then pro- gressed through the levels of ma- chinist and was F. L. Navas promoted to machinist A in June, 1942, the position he presently holds. The fifth member of the Sept. 1 retirees is Hugh H. Nixon ot Pro- cess-Utilities. Mr. Nixon has over nmeteen years of service, exclusively in the Utilities Division. His first as- signment in July, 1944, was operator in the Powerhouse. He served in various capacities as shift breaker and assistant shift foreman and in October, 1954, was promoted to shift foreman, zone II. In February, 1961, he was made Utilities shift foreman, the position he holds at present. AT ARUBA, NETHERLANDS ANTILLES, BY LAOO OIL & TRANSPORT CO.. LTD. Printed by the Aruba DrukkeriJ N.V., NRth. Ant. An Honest Man Found Diogenes, a noted Greek philosopher who lived centuries ago, was said to have wandered about in the daylight with a lantern, looking for an honest man. If he were still looking today, he could find the honest man he sought in Aruba. He is here. The other day, a gentleman walked into the Lago Commissary and approached the cashier with whom he had previously checked out a supply of groceries. He handed the cashier Fls. 100 and explained that he had been given Fls. 100 too much in change. The sum was not rightly nor honestly his and he was returning it to the man who had erred. The gentleman of exemplary honesty left Lago Commissary when he had completed his deed as quietly and as modestly as when he had entered. For those who knew what had transpired, his depar- ture was followed with admiration and respect. He who admired most was the cashier who had reported an unex- plainable shortage of Fls. 100. Lago Commissary cashiers, naturally. are responsible for the money they handle. Continued shortages are subject to disciplinary action. When the gentleman of honesty returned the Fls. 100 he not only returned a sum to its rightful place, but he also protected the integrity of a Lago cashier. The entire act was, indeed, a classic example of the enactment of the Golden Rule, of doing unto others as you would have them do unto you. Should Diogenes return, he can be directed in Aruba. For in the midst of the island's population is a gentleman whose honesty and principle is the highest and most worthy of the greatest respect. The practice throughout the summer S has been to arrange either a tour or a lecture every Saturday morning for the thirty-six university stu- dents. Their most recent tour took them first to the administrative offices of the Antilles Chemical Com- pany. There they heard T. J. Dimmock, plant man- ager, explain how hydrogen is taken from refinery gas and water and nitrogen are taken from air. Following the description of the Antilles plant's process, the group was taken on a bus tour of the ammonia installation and attendant Barcadera har- bor and pier facilities. From Antilles, the college students proceeded to the Balashi water plant. Here an explanation of the distillation process was presented by I. R. Romeijn. who followed his explanation with a tour assisted by C Yarzagaray and J. Nunes. The students made a complete round of the plant, and along the way found intrigue in the workings of a boiler or a 7500 kilowatt generator or the seawater intake structure. S Opened to the students was the large turbine and .AT THE administrative offices of the Antilles Chemical Com- generator house, where again Mr. Romeijn explained pany, the group listened to T. J. LA I N Il l ll X Two Alky Reactors The two huge reactors, both vital to the opera- tion of the alkylation complex, underwent general inspections recently -the west reactor in May, and the east reactor early this month, its first since its installation in 1960. Twelve crafts and an average of forty men were involved each day during the in- spection. A minute and efficient inspection of the reactors takes about a week or less depending upon the repairs that are uncovered when the protecting layers of the large vessels are stripped bare. Seven mixers were lifted from their positions atop the reactor, repaired and replaced in newly packed stuffing boxes, which enclose the area through which the mixers extend into the reactor chamber. There are ten mixers. An eleventh, which was also pulled and repaired, is located in the modi- fication zone of the of the settler, which is below Undergo Inspection the elevated reactor. At relatively low temperatures, an average of about forty-eight degrees, Fahrenheit, the mixers agitate butane feed, isobutane recycle and sulfuric acid in the processing of alkylate. Ap- proximately 60,000 gallons of acid an hour are cycled through the reactor. One of the functions of the many craftsmen on a general inspection of the reactors is the replacement of insulation. Because constant low temperatures are important, all vital lines are covered with heavy cellular glass insulation. Over straight lengths of pipe, preformed insulation is used. Where valves and bends occur, a bulk type insulation is wrapped a- round the irregular shaped pieces. Once secured, the insulation is given a covering of aluminum paint. In addition to lines leading to the reactor, the main vessels are also insulated. Shortly thereafter hoses were attached that connect- ed the ship to the pumping and storage facilities of the Antilles Chemical Company. For the next sixteen hours ammonia was pump- ed into the ship. Four thousand tons were pumped aboard, and while there was no fanfare or of- ficial greeter, this was the first export cargo of Aruba ammonia. Construction of the ammonia plant of the Antilles Chemical Company was begun Dec. 10, 1961. It was inaugurated May 29 of this year. The plant's raw materials come from Lago and the air. Am- monia is a chemical combination of hydrogen and nitrogen. Hydro- gen comes from refinery gas, which is piped to Barcadera, and water, and nitrogen is extracted from the air. Ammonia is stored at a temperature sixty degrees below freezing, Fahrenheit, at normal at- mospheric pressure. The ship that transported the Antilles Chemical Company's first cargo of ammonia is an interesting vessel with a unique past. It en- tered Barcadera Harbor, as it did San Nicolas Harbor last Decem- ber, a bright new vessel with a maze of piping above deck. Its ap- pearance is strikingly different from the worn and untidy T-1 tan- ker that left this area in Novem- ber, 1961, to be converted to an ammonia carrier in a German ship- yard. The Esso Centro America, under a different name, was built in 1945. Of 382-foot length, the ship has tanks capable of holding 5748 cubic meters of cargo. Its primary function is to carry am- monia from Aruba to other fertil- izer plants in Central and South America. The two employees of the Antil- les Chemical Company responsible for the first shore to ship connec- tion were C. Schmidt and A. Wever. THE ESSO Centro America is a converted tanker that many years before had visited Aruba with cargoes of oil. The conversion from tanker to ammonia carrier was done in a shipyard in Germany. 4' ESSO CENTRO .merica ta tn tanker concerti cu hopi anjanan anterior tabala bishita Aruba clu arga di azeta. Pumping ammonia aboard the Esso Centro America actually began at about 5:30 p.m., Aug. 3. Moments after the pumping had been started, the pipes, above, turned white with frost caused by the extremely low temperatures which keep ammonia in a liquid state.
