TD-Engineering Sets
Safety Record
June 19, employees of the En-
gineering Division of the Techni-
cal Department completed eight-
een years without a disabling in-
dustrial injury. The safe man-
hours worked during this period
totalled 6,550,769.
Engineering Division personnel
were congratulated for their fine
accomplishment by H. F. Couzy,
division superintendent. In his
letter to each employee, Mr. Couzy
noted that during the past twelve
months, division personnel sub-
mitted 1130 safety slips. "This
large number of safety slips is
further evidence of your high in-
terest in safety," Mr. Couzy said.

Lasser served as draughtsman, esti-
mator, and in various categories of
engineer. He was promoted to senior
engineer in November, 1958. Mr. Las-
ser and Mr. Binnion will leave Aruba
next month.
Mr. Necebet, who left Lago this
month, worked in Mechanical-Gar-
age for twenty-six years. He held
the positions of garage helper B,
corporal C and driver I He was a
Lago taxi driver at the time he con-
cluded his long service.

house section head. In July, 1949, he
moved to Mechanical Administration
as planner clerk I. Mr. MacDonald
was made a zone shift clerk in Dec-
ember. 1952, the position he held
when he left Lago this month.
Mr. Arendsz, who retired June 1,
spent twenty-four years in the Proc-
ess Department. His time was spent
primarily in Light Oils Finishing.
Promotions took him from the po-
sition of process helper D to pumper,
the title he held at the time of his
retirement.
Mr. Santos started out in the
Mechanical Department and ended
his eighteen-year employ in the
Lago Police Department. His service
began in February, 1939, as a lab-
orer in Mechanical-Mason. He later
worked in the Commissary as a del-
iveryman and sales clerk. He joined
the Lago police force in February,
1951, and was promoted to patrolman
II in June, 1951. He held this position
when he left the company this month.

Field Day; 331 International Contacts Made in 24 Hours


Five stations of the Aruba Ama-
teur Radio Club operated from
five different field locations in a
twenty-four-hour field day early
this month. Operating under what
could be termed "emergency" con-
ditions, the station operators and
their radio colleagues were strate-
gically located across the entire is-
land.
The operators and locations were
Humphrey Maasdamme, Station
PJ2AQ, Dos Playas: Jim Wana-
maker, Station PJ3AR, Sea Grape
Grove; Juan Noguera, Station
PJ3AS, Urataka; Max Sand. Sta-
tion PJ3AL, Palm Beach, and Mar-
co Jansen, Station PJ3AQ, Malmok.
Although handicapped by un-
favorable atmospheric conditions,
the amateur radio operators were
able to raise 331 contacts. The
leading operator during the field
period was Mr. Maasdamme of
Station PJ3AQ, who made 139 con-
tacts. Mr. Sand made the most
telegraphic contacts with forty,
and Mr. Maasdamme was high
with 103 telephonic contacts.


In some instances, the locations
of the transmitters and receivers
were almost inaccessible. From
caves to open beaches where tents
shielded the operators from the
sun's heat, the men transmitted
their signals. In every instance, it
took a fair amount of muscle to
haul heavy radio equipment to the
operating location, but it all was
considered rewarding and success-
ful to the amateur operators.
The purpose of such a field day
- in addition to the enjoyment of
operating in face of the challenge


posed by field conditions is to
prepare amateur radio operators
for emergency conditions in the
event catastrophe should eliminate
commercial communications sys-
tems. Amateur radio operators in
various areas of the world have
proved themselves valuable in
times of earthquakes, floods or
other disorders of nature. Field
days are held by radio clubs all
over the world. The intent is to set
up portable equipment in the field
and raise or contact as many dis-
tant amateur operators as possible.
