Jansen, a stenographer in the Executive Department, has been chosen Suggester-of-the-Month under Lago's Coin Your Ideas pro- gram. She has been given an initial award of Fla. 225 for her suggestion, which is expected to result in an an- nual saving for the company of $742. For many years, Lago has been buying practically all its stationery supplies, including pencils, from the United States, she wrote the CYI office. She asked a price comparison be made among European suppliers on the same quality pencils the com- pany has been using. Investigation revealed the same quality lead pencils could be obtained from Germany for $4.16 a gross, compared with $5.44 a gross for the United States brand. Lago buys about 580 gross of these pencils a year. There are 144 pencils in a gross. The suggestion is expect- ed to save Lago $1.28 a gross, slight- ly less than a penny (U.S.) on every lead pencil it buys. Mrs. Jansen chose the CYI pocket knife as her special award. (Continua na pagina 3) (Continua na pagina 7) Increased Efficiency and Reduced Costs Keep Lago Competitive, President Says Lago's intent to remain a healthy, active company in Aruba, and its desire to be a respected and just citizen were described by President W. A. Murray to members of management at the ninth annual inform- ation sessions. The Lago president acknowledged that there were some difficult factors in today's business, but advised that current policies must be viewed objectively. The determination to maintain a competitive, efficient Lago was clear- ly evident in Mr. Murray's remarks, He emphasized that "no one is going to do this for us, and we are not go- ing to lessen our efforts to increase efficiency and decrease costs." He spoke of future commitments and how they must be judged objectively in relation to the best interests of the employees, the company and the community. "We must meet and ad- just the motives of each group to the benefit of all.' He stated that this was a difficult task because of the views or interpretations given deci- sions and policies by the different groups. What Lago must do to meet oper- ating requirements, and what others feel Lago should do can be opposing conceptions which often cannot be reconciled. Criticism has been aimed at Lago suggesting that Lago is not acting in the bst interests of the community. "Were we to fail because we re- fused to acknowledge the economic warnings of the international market place, then we would have failed in our responsibilities to the Aruba community. We would have failed those employees who would have been the driving force of an active refinery." Mr. Murray further added that to allow Lago to fail would be to deprive the community of its weightiest economic base. Asks Understanding Mr. Murray asked for some ac- commodation and understanding to opposing conceptions. To the ques- tions "What is our responsibility?", and "What is best for Aruba?", Mr. Murray answered: "To remain an ac- tive, healthy business, of course." He spoke of planning and future commitments, and said that "we are not looking at today or tomorrow, but the day after tomorrow and bey- ond" The Lago president told the members of management that the Standard Oil Company (New Jersey) is a foremost company. Lago is a part of that company. Competitors are slashing every possible cost to better their position against Jersey and Lago. Lago cannot stand still, he told the group. He complimented them and their capable employees for 1962 accomplishments, and reminded the management members that their ef- forts to reduce costs and increase efficiency contributed directly to Lago's well being last year. Mr. Mur- ray said that their task would not be lightened because Lago must conti- nue to modernize, to consolidate and to seek means of increasing efficien- cy. "Can you make your employees understand what must be done? Can we make the community understand our reasons and motives?" He posed these questions and explained that Lago is faced with an "employee and community problem of understand- ing as important as any of our tech- nical problems." Be Realistic Mr. Murray said that "we must be realistic to the fury and force of competition. He told how energy buyers are comparing prices "just as you and I compare prices of personal goods." The buyer is dictating pet- roleum moves. Unrelenting competi- tion and nagging oversupply in the oil industry have given the energy buyer command. The Lago president emphasized that Lago and every other refinery and every other bus- iness operate in relation to the dic- tates and needs of people. Lago can- not set itself apart or above prevail- ing economics, he said. That Lago is a marginal supplier or last resort supplier was explained by Mr. Murray. He told members of management how Lago must com- pete "I think scramble would be a more descriptive term" for re- quirements beyond the capacities of national or regional refining instal- lations. Many of these needs, parti- cularly in Europe this winter, were (Continued on page 3) A PENNY here, a penny there adds up to lots of money, as Mrs. Olivia T. Jansen, a Lago stenographer found out. She was named CYI Suggester- of-the-Month, winning Fls. 225 for suggesting Lago buy its lead pencils from a more inexpensive source. LTD. Printed by the Aruba DrukkerJ N.V., Neth. Ant. What Our Competitors Say Much has been said about costs and competition. It has been said different ways, but it all has the same meaning. Nevertheless, there is no better way to establish the warning of what our competitors think and are doing than to cite a direct quotation by a competitor on the very subject so much is being said about. A competing company recently launched a 47,000-DWT tanker. It is the first major bridge-aft tanker constructed in the United States, and will be used in trade between Texas and the East Coast of the United States. A director of that company said at the launching: "While in many quarters automation may be considered a dirty word, I can assure you that no such stigma is attached to it in this organization, and that includes the Marine Department. Improved ef- ficiency techniques and devices of all types are necessary if the domes- tic shipping industry is to maintain its competitive position." So speaks one of the competitors of Standard Oil Company (New Jersey). S MURRAY SAYS (Continued from page 1) filled by Lago because, as Mr. Mu - ray said, "we change to meet inter- national challenges, and we continue to operate as a low-cost refinery." Development on the job depends on the individual, he said. Lago needs good men and will always need good men. Mr. Murray stated that the search for and the development of capable employees have not lessened. He pointed out areas where training programs are being conducted, where Lago is assisting highly qualified employees in university studies in the United States, and how Lago en- courages interest in youth in refin- ing operations. Said Mr. Murray: "I want to state again that there are many opportunities at Lago for Aru- bans who are technically trained at European and North American uni- versities," Important, as always, is the sub- ject of safety to which Mr, Murray definitely established that theie had not been nor will there be any les- sening of effort. "Regardless of what consolidations or economies are ef- fected, safety will always be a major consideration." He noted that the first quarter report of the National Safety Council contest listed Lago first, and hoped that this position would be maintained, In closing, Mr. Murray had this to say: "As long as we remain alert, efficient and able to adjust ourselves and our equipment to the shifting demands of the international market; as long as we remain formidable competition for others in the indus- try, I am sure Lago will be Jersey's big refiner for a long, long time."
