Teachers Get 3000 Books, Three Truckloads In All, For Their Island Classes About 3000 textbooks, declared surplus from Seroe Colorado Elemen- tary School, were donated to a dozen island schools March 5. Teachers and school officials from twelve of the island's Protestant, Roman Catholic and government public schools came to the Lago Reception Center to choose books for their classes from the three pickup truck loads left there. The books were declared surplus because of the shrinking pupil pop- ulation at Seroe Colorado, according to Supervising Principal D. V. Thomp- son. The books, for students in kin- dergarten through Grade 6, include such topics as flowers, safety, neigh- bors and animals. Tour Leader Severiano Luydens said the amount of books was the largest yet received at the Reception Center. Only twenty books remained after the teachers had made their selections for their classes. These will be given to Lago employees, as is customary when small amounts of books are received. Three Men Receive Thirty-Year Awards; Youngest Is Only Forty-Six Years Old Three men were guests of honor at the special management start meeting March 13. The occasion was the awarding of thirty-year service emblems and certificates to the three men. Welcoming them to the meeting and expressing the company's appre- ciation for their long and faithful service was General Manager F. Theory Put Int o Practice On Lago Tour Five HBS Students Get New Insight In Book-Learning and Island Industry Five Colegio Arubano students received a new insight into the old question of "Why do we have to study this stuff?" when their chem- istry teacher helped arrange a refinery tour for them. "They liked the tour very much," said J. G. M. Schenk, their instruc- tor. It gave them a better understanding of the applications of the chemistry they've been studying, he said. "This is what we need, a better understanding." "I'd told them everything in the classroom," Mr. Schenk explained, but explanations are made much more understandable when students may see actual experiments put to practical use in industry. Participating in the tour were Dennis Henriquez, Robbie Bodnautsch, Ram Daryamani, Mariam Dennissan and Alvin Conner, who make up the membership of the chemistry class. A similar group also accom- panied Mr. Schenk on a refinery tour a year ago. Students in the school's highest class had expressed a desire to know more about industries in the United States and Holland, he said. The first tour was arranged because of that curiosity, and "we hope we can continue it each year," he said. Government scholarships will assist some students in furthering their educations. A requirement of such a program, he said, is that the student return here on its completion so the government will receive some of the benefit from the student's training. Some students prefer not to apply for the government scholarship, but would rather enter industry elsewhere. The tour of Lago, Mr. Schenk felt, will do much to stimulate interest in returning here. Their Lago tour included a visit to the Acid and Edeleanu Plant, where the visitors had expressed a desire for an explanation of the sulphur recovery process; and trips to the Cat Cracker, the labora- tories and NFAR. Lab Technician Felix R. Croes showed the group the well-stocked chemical supplies, and explained the purpose and operation of some of the complex laboratory equipment. These included the gas chromato- graphy equipment, used in analyzing the hydrocarbons and liquid com- ponents in refinery processing; and flash point determination instru- ments, which find the lowest temperature at which an oil or fuel gives off enough vapor to form a mixture which will ignite. The group gave close attention to pilot plant equipment, and saw Lago technicians analyze a crude oil sample for its bottom sediment and water content. Lab Technician B. F. Dirkz showed the class some of the colder temperatures encountered in the refinery, pouring liquid nitrogen from a vacuum flask onto the floor. Because of its extreme temperature, minus 320 degrees F., it boiled away. lisp% 1Wi~ij I ARIUBA ESSO NEWS ARUBA ESSO NEWS March 23. 1963 HONORED ON his retirement after twenty-eight years with Lago was Lazaro Geerman of Marine-Floating Equipment Division. I L ARUBA ESSO NEWS March 23. 1963 Ruperto Angela Leads Safe Drivers With Twenty-Four Accident-Free Years THE SAFE driving incentive program is being led by Ruperto Angela of Mechanical-Transportation. His twenty-four years of driving without an accident made him the safest of the ninety-six drivers participating in the program to the end of 1962. Ruperto Angela, who compiled the out- standing record, has spent twenty-five of his thirty-two years with Lago in Mechanical-Transportation. Presently a water truck driver, he began driving a truck for the dining Figaioa ot Transportation, twelve hall about 1938 He later went to the years; A R C. Traffic wasn't so heavy in those years, however, but driving still required a great deal of caution. Alertness and caution, Mr Angela said, were prime requisites to safe driving. The program, sponsored by the Safety Division, provides payments of Fls. 10 for each three-month per- iod in which participating drivers meet its requnements. They're judg- ed not only on their driving habits and lecoid, but on their general per- formance of regular duties, too. Others leading the list of safe dri- vers are: Francisco Maduro of Trans- portation, almost twenty-one years without an accident; Eugenmo van der Biezen of Storehouse, almost nineteen yeais; Maximo R. Arends of Transportation, eighteen years: Do- mmico Bislhp of Transportation, six- teen years; Ramon Monte and Tho- mas D. Tromp of Transportation and Jose M. Croes of Trans- poitation, fourteen years; Aloysius Federico Tromp of Laboratory, eleven years; Demetiro Koolman of Store- house, Estanisleo Koolman of Trans- portation and Pedro D Croes of Yard, ten years each. There are other drivers also with- out disqualification since driving in the contest, all with less than ten years' safe drivmg to their credit. Fifty-three of the drivers involved in the program have had accidents. These had a total of eighty-five acci- dents since the start of the program. One member of this group was in- volved in five collisions. One of the drivers was in four accidents, and seven had three accidents each. Eleven of the drivers in this group of fifty-three had two accidents each, and thirty-three had only one acci- dent. Cornelius C. Held Cornelius C. Metal, concrete and tinted glass will replace the existing wooden structure, in line with the policy of replacing com- bustible materials in the area. The new facilities will be connect- ed with the jet fuel system, permit- ting higher loading rates and reduc- ing ship delays, operating inefficien- cies and the high risk of lead con- tamination. He suggested installing guards on lathe motor ends to keep out metal chips. Antonie Brown Selected As CYI Safety Suggester; Wins FIs. 30 Cash Award Antonie Brown, a janitor in Mech- anical-Yard, has been selected as Safety Suggester-of-the-Month under Lago's Coin-Your-Ideas program. Mr. Brown's winning suggestion was that guards be installed on all lathe mo- tors in the Machine Shop. A screen or deflector will be used which will prevent metal chips and shavings from passing through the holes at the ends of the lathe motors. The suggestion earned Fls. 30 for Mr. Brown. H. P. E. Ecury, assistant zone su- pervisor, said the improvement would completely eliminate the chance that these chips can cause a motor failure. Screens will be installed on the near- side of motors having larger open- ings. About fifteen motors will be in- volved. Some of the motors are presently screened, or have relatively small end openings. These aren't affected by Mr. Brown's suggestion. Other Coin-Your-Ideas winners for February were: Antonie Brown Selecta Come Sugeridor di CYI Ta Gana Premio di FIs. 30 Antonie Brown, un Janitor den Mechanical-Yard, a worde select co- mo e Sugeridor di Luna pa Segurdad segun a program di Coin-Your- Ideas.
