E presenta- Murray y a worde atendi pa Vice Three New Year's Babies Born at Lago Hospital; Girls Lead, Two to One Two girls and one boy were born Jan. 1, 1963, at Lago Hospital. The first new year's baby was Miriam Griselda Ruiz, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jose Ruiz. Miriam was born at 6:05 a.m. and weighed six pounds, fourteen ounces. Her father works in the instrument craft. The second young lady to make her appearance was Ligia Ritania Luydens, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ricardo Luydens. Ligia arrived at 1:15 p.m. and weighed eight pounds, eight ounces. Her father is employed in the electrical craft. The male representative New Year's Day arrived in the early even- ing at 6:09. He is Hendrick Eugino Figaroa, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gero- nimo Figaroa. Hendrick was the day's heavyweight weighing a sturdy nine pounds, four ounces. His father works in the pipe craft. All-in-all, Mr. Stork did an excel- lent job. It isn't often that three babies usher in the new year at Lago Hospital. Last year, in fact, there were no new year's babies at all. The first baby of 1962 didn't arrive until Jan. 2. This happened once before, in 1944. Even though the girls took the lead the first day, they have quite a bit of catching up to do. Last year, boys far outnumbered girls born at Lago Hospital. Male babies number- ed 310 during 1962 compared to 271 girl babies. Included in the 581-baby total were three sets of twins. F. C. Donovan, Assistant General Managers F. W. Switzer and B. C. Clarkson, Treasurer W. T. Murphy and Corporate Secretary T. F. Ha- gerty. Mr. Murray's date of employment is July 5, 1932. At that time he was employed by the Imperial Oil Com- pany, Ltd., in Canada, in its market- ing group. His Imperial employ fol- low2d shortly after his graduation from the University of British Co- lumbia as a mechanical engineer. June 1, 1933, he reported to Im- perial's Ioco Refinery in British Co- lumbia as a laborer in what was call- ed the "bull gang." In the course of the next few years, Mr. Murray be- came a fireman, gauger on a tanker and then shore gauger. He was as- signed to the refinery's budget con- trol section and then to the operating section as a relief shift foreman. In 1938, Mr. Murray was trans- ferred from loco to the Sarnia Ref- inery's engineering division where he worked on designs for new combina- tion units which were to be con- structed at Imperial's Calgary Ref- inery. He was transferred to the Halifax Refinery where he operated a smaller model of the Calgary des- ign. In September, 1939, he moved to Calgary to put the new units in operation. loco To Sarnia At this point, however, world af- fairs intervened and Mr. Murray joined the Royal Canadian Air Force. He had attained his pilot's qualifica- tions in 1931, and had, over the years, maintained his pilot's rating by flying weekends and holidays as a member of auxiliary flight units. He was separated from the RCAF in October, 1945, with the rank of group captain, the equivalent of a full colonel. He returned to Imperial and was assigned to the Montreal Refinery as a technical assistant. In January, 1947, he was transferred to the Ioco Refinery as process superintendent. He later became plant superinten- dent. He returned to the Montreal Refinery in May, 1952, as assistant manager. The following year he was transferred to the Sarnia Refinery, Imperial's largest refinery, as assis- tant manager. In October, 1955, he moved on to the Winnipeg Refinery as manager. Effective Jan. 1, 1957, he was transferred to Lago as general man- ager. May 12, 1959, he was named vice-president and general manager. He succeeded O. Mingus as president of Lago Oct. 1, 1961. PUBLISHED EVERY OTHER SATURDAY. AT ARUBA, NETHERLANDS ANTILLES. BY LAGO OIL & TRANSPORT CO.. LTD. Qive A Little One of the many meanings of the word 'give' is 'to favor'. To favor can be either in thought or action. Both pose excellent considerations for daily behavior in 1963. Perhaps 'to favor' or 'give a little' could be the framework within which to build a new year's resolution. The exe- cution of such a decision could contribute in many ways to che hap- piness and well being of family and community. Take driving and on-the-road behavior, as a for instance. Isn't it quite often that pure stubbornness, a hostile attitude or plain arro- gance suddenly transforms the driver of a vehicle into one determined to prove who has the right of way regardless of the possible out- come? How about the driver who can't wait at an intersection and races out into the main stream of traffic in defiance of laws and with complete disregard for other drivers? Another common form of dis- respect for the safety of others practiced quite frequently on Aruba roads is passing at excessive speeds with traffic approaching in the opposite direction. The fact that such an ill-advised, reckless maneuver forces others off the road seems not to bother the irresponsible driver. Three examples are cited, and they are the obvious and flagrant examples there are many more -- when drivers could 'give a little' or 'favor' the other fellow. No respect is lost when drivers choose not to contest but rather accede to another's move. Gained is the safety of sane driving and the swelling of pride in being considerate of others and in eliminating a moment of frantic and dangerous maneuvering. To 'give' or 'favor' the other fellow when right of way is questionable, at an intersection, or when contemplating passing, or during the course of any of innumer- able driving situations is to be an intelligent, considerate driver, who, through respect for others, helps make his community a safer and saner place to live. There is no room for arbitrary stubbornness in favoring or consider- ing others. Off the road and in everyday relations with each other, respect for other people's thoughts and concession to points well found- ed can make life and the community or business in which this life manifests itself a satisfying and progressive experience. Sometimes life's greatest easement comes in giving a little and in so doing un- blocking set patterns. Suddenly comes the realization that other people have rights, feelings, emotions, thoughts. All that need be done is to 'give a little'. Duna Un Poco Uno di e hopi nificacionnan di e palabra 'duna' ta 'favorece'. Favo- rece por ta ambos den pensamento of accion. Ambos ta forma consider- acionnan excelente pa conduct di tur dia den 1963. No tin lugar pa cabezura arbitrario den favorecemento of consider- acion pa otronan. Tambe ariba camina y den relacionnan diario cu otro, respect pa ideanan di otro hende y admiti puntonan cu ta fund por haci bida y comunidad of negocio den cual e bida aki manifest su mes un experiencia placentero y progresivo. Anto d piente e realizacion ta bini cu otro hende tambe tin derecho, sintim tonan, emocionnan pensamentonan. Tur loke mester haci ta "duna poco cooperation." Twenty Mechanical Men Complete Eight-Month Instrumentation Course An intensive industrial instrumen- tation course that began in April and was completed in November was at- tended by twenty Mechanical Depart- ment employees, eighteen from the instrument craft and two from the technical group. The course was purchased by Lago from the International Correspon- dence Schools of Latin America and given as on-the-job training to the twenty men. Some of the men had previously been enrolled in this same course through correspondence with the school. Lago refunded their course expenses and enrolled them in the company-sponsored study. The course was purchased to re- place obsolete phases of instrumenta- tion study. The program comprised thirty-three units of basic subject matter, instrumentation principles and related process operations. The course presented a solid foundation for the more advanced study of semi- electronically controlled instruments. The result was that each student felt that the course had enabled him to better understand the intricacies and purposes of instrumentation. The men were divided into three groups. They met every day except Saturday for two hours. In addition, a large amount of study was com- pleted in the form of homework. R. E. The plant, which is expected to commence production during the first half of 1964, will produce a wide variety of nitrogenous fertili- zers based upon ammonia production of 300 tons a day. This production is expected to fill most of the national deficiency of nitrogenous fertilizer production in Spain which at present, and prob- ably up to the time when the plant goes into operation, must be im- ported from abroad It should mean to Spain a substantial savings in foreign exchange. I ARUBAB1 ESSO NEWSS Janlary 12, 1963 ARUBA ESSO NEWS January 12, 1963 T-1 Converted To Jersey's First Ammonia Carrier Returns 1 _ To Aruba .- THE ESSO Venezuela left Aruba in November, 1961, after it was towed here by the Esso San Nicholas. Repairs to the weathered, unkempt vessel enabled the T-1 to travel to Hamburg, Germany, where it was refurbished to a bright, efficient ammonia carrier, and renamed Centro America. Maiden Voyage of Barcadera Ammonia Carrier Brings Unique Ship To Lago' The ship that left and the one that returned were so completely dif- ferent it was almost inconceivable that they should be the same ship. The ship underwent such a complete refitting, it might be fairer to say that the Esso Centro America is a new (comparatively) ship and not the old Esso Venezuela, even though they are one and the same. The Esso Centro America moved gracefully into San Nicholas Harbor made fit for the Atlantic crossing. last month. Its gleaming paint, smooth surface and deckful of intri- cate piping almost seemed to say "look at me now." The ship is some- thing to look at, too, in its own right and not just in comparison with the weathered, unkempt, disabled T-1 the ship started out as. Now an ammonia carrier, Jersey's first, the Esso Centro America was refitted for its new assignment in Hamburg, Germany, during the last year. The maiden voyage brought it to Aruba and past the harbor at Barcadera from where the Esso Cen- tro America will operate. At Lago it took on bunkers and water and pro- ceeded to Jacksonville, Florida, where the ship will be berthed until the ammonia plant is completed and pro- ducing. At that time, the Centro America will carry Antilles Chem- ical Company ammonia to other fer- tilizer plants in Central and South America. The Esso Centro America is 382 feet long and within this length are tanks capable of holding 5748 cubic meters of cargo. It has a complex maze of pipes that make up much of the refrigeration system which will maintain the ammonia in liquid form at sixty Fahrenheit degrees below freezing. Maze Of Pipes The Esso Centro America, nee Es- so Venezuela, was built in 1945 and had been a Creole vessel. In 1961 it was purchased by Jersey's chemical interests to be converted into an am- monia carrier. Sitting idle for four yea,'s in Amuay Bay had done little for its seaworthy condition. A crew picked the ship up and planned to take the Esso Venezuela to Curacao where it was to be put in drydock, cleaned up and refurbished sufficient- ly to enable it to make a safe Atlan- tic crossing to Germany. The initial leg of the journey was short and disappointing. Engine room failure attribute to little or no maintenance for four years ended the first part of the T-l's journey about eight miles off Punta Macolla, Venezuela. The Esso San Nicholas retrieved the disabled ship. It was the same San Nicholas that shoved the clean, new Esso Centro America into a Lago harbor berth one year later. The crippled Esso Venezuela was brought to Aruba where minor re- pairs got her underway enough to make Curagao. There the ship was As the new ammonia carrier, Esso Centio America, its return was with- out incident a routine sailing.
