supervising engineer in June, 1959,
and transferred to TD-Engmeering
in June, 1962.
Mr. Ratcliff's Lago service started
in December, 1950, as a chemical en-
gineer A. He later became a senior
engineer in TD-Process, then was
named a senior engineering in Tech-
nical's Economics and Planning
Group, the position he held at the
time of his promotion to engineering
associate in economics and planning.
Mr. Ratcliff was employed by the
Louisiana Division of the then Esso
Standard Oil Company from June,
1939, to December, 1950.

Thrift Plan Participants
Will Share Record Fund

Earnings for Past Year
Fund earnings of the Lago Thrift
Plan reached an all-time high this
year. The high return in earnings
plus the additional contribution made
by the company to Lago Thrift Plan
accounts totals over two and one-
half million guilders. The sum of
Fls. 2,531,000 will be shared propor-
tionately by 3440 employee partici-
pants in the Lago Thrift Plan.
The money employees and the
company regularly deposited in the
Thrift Plan during the year earned
Fls. 1,091,000, the highest in the his-
tory of fund earnings. Last year's
earnings were Fls. 1,045,643 or
Fls. 45,357 less than the sum which
will be shared by present Thrift Plan
participants. Interest was earned at
the rate of 365 per cent from Oct. 1,
1961, to Sept. 30, 1962.
The additional contribution made
by Lago totaled Fls 1,440,000. As an-
nounced earlier, eligible employees
received fifty-two cents for every
guilder they deposited in the Thrift
Plan during the past year plus a
lump sum ot FIs. 25.
Payment of the special Christmas
withdrawal option will be made Dec.
3 for both semi-monthly and month-
ly paid employees.

Process, Technical and Mechanical Men
The list of thirty-year service employees continues to grow. At spec-
ial ceremonies Nov. 14, Pedro I. Bisslik, Narciso Jacopucci, Marco B.
Maduro and Roman Croes had their thirty years of Lago service ac-

Who Owns Jersey?
Question: Who owns Standard Oil Company (New Jersey)?
The question has been asked and the answer given many times. Th(
answer, though, never dims in either interested or impact because the
number of owners grows each year. Jersey ownership is a classic and
dynamic example of public participation in private enterprise.
At the end of 1961, Jersey's registered shareholders those people
who own a part of Jersey totalled 714,704, an increase of 49,52E
over the number at the end of 1960. Of the number of owners, 278,44E
are women, 226,020 are men, 125,076 are joint owners and 27,660 are
held in the names of children. Sixty-four per cent of the Jersey share:
holders own less than 100 shares; thirty per cent own between 100 and
500 shares. The Rockefeller Foundation owns less than three per cent
of Jersey Stock. In addition there are many insurance and investment
companies, brokers, pension funds and profit-sharing plans which
represent thousands of other individuals who have an interest in Jersey.

Watch Your Ladders
This is just about the time of year everybody begins to tidy up their
homes with a dash of paint, a little plaster, a length of wood trim. It
is usually work that calls for the use of a ladder to reach some of the
areas overhead and not easily accessible. Once on the ladder, there may
still arise situations where it would be easier to stretch a little than to
climb down and move the ladder to within safe working distance of the
hard-to-reach spot. The only trouble and it's a big one is that
there is danger in reaching. It is easy to lose balance and fall. Frankly,
it is very easy to get hurt on a ladder merely by overreaching and
consequently falling.
This December and Christmas season, particularly, and then all next
year, select the ladder that is particularly suited for the work that has
to be reached. Move the ladder; don't overreach. It takes less time to
climb down, move the ladder, then climb it again than it does for a
broken bone to mend while lying in a hospital bed. This Christmas
season while decorating a tree or a house make use of the safe support
a ladder can give. At all times, observe the following few and easy
suggestions:
Be sure your ladder's resting on a firm, skid-proof base. When pos-
sible, have a second person steady it.
Don't overreach while on a ladder. It's easier and safer to climb
down and move the ladder over a few feet.
Face the ladder and grip firmly with both hands while climbing
either up or down. Don't try to climb too fast.
Be sure ladder rungs and your shoes are free of mud, grease and oil.
Keep metal ladders away from wires and electrical connections to
avoid the possibility of electrical shock.
Be sure to use the right length ladder for the job.
Be sure the ladder is in safe condition.

Jersey Telstar Message

From New York to Europe

Is First Industrial Use
When a message was sent from the
New York offices of Standard Oil
Company (New Jersey) to England
and then on to affiliate offices on the
Continent by Telstar, it signalled the
first industrial use of the orbiting
communication satellite.
The satellite was put into orbit by
Bell Telephone, a major United Sta-
tes communications concern, July 10.
It was Aug. 23 that Jersey Board
Chairman Leo D. Welch sent his ini-
tial message to Executive Vice-Pres-
ident and Director W. R. Stott, at
the time attending ceremonies being
held by Esso Netherlands in The
Hague to celebrate the naming of the
86,000-ton Esso Libya, newest mem-
ber of the worldwide Esso fleet.
Mr. Welch's message relayed to
Holland expressed congratulations on
the design and construction of the
Esso Libya. The new tanker was con-
structed in the Verolme United Ship-
yards. Mr. Welch's message included
the observation that "the Esso Libya
will help to shrink the distance be-
tween producer and consumer of pet-
roleum. In the same way, the Telstar
satellite foreshadows a system that
will ultimately lead to improved
worldwide communications." Mr. Stott
replied to New York via the satellite.

C. J. Griffin Is Appointed

To Creole Director Post
C. J. Griffin, an executive who
many years ago was a Lago Process
Department employee, has recently
been assigned to the Creole Petrol-
eum Corporation. To accept the Ca-
racas assignment, Mr. Griffin resign-
ed his position as president of Esso
Brazil.
The Creole Board of Directors
elected Mr. Griffin a director and
member of the Executive Committee.
His position as Esso Brazil president
was filled by G. W. Potts, former
Lago marketing representative.
In February, 1951, while Mr. Grif-
fin was superintendent of Lago's
Eastern Process Division, he was
transferred to Cuba as superintend-
ent of the Belot Refinery. His posi-
tion at Lago was filled by G. L.
MacNutt. Mr. Griffin started at Lago
in 1934 as an operator third class in
Cracking. Successive promotions
made him process foreman in Catal-
ytic in May, 1941, and assistant div-
ision superintendent in August, 1946.
He was made Eastern Division super-
intendent in January, 1949.

Union International offices, and by

satellite then retransmitted the mes-
sages to the receiving station at
Goonhilly Downs in England. There
they were sent by ground lines to

At Barcadera by the sea aloe
once grew in profusion, and the
land which supported its growth
contributed little to the welfare of
the Aruba community. During the
past year, a transformation has
been taking place. The land has
not been altered except where
it becomes part of the sea but
that which it supports has been
changed greatly. In place of low-
lying, splayed aloe now rise majes-
tic and straight the buildings and
units of the chemical complex. The
Barcadera site marks Aruba's
strides into an industrial and pro-
gressive society. The site will be
occupied, when construction is
completed, by the Antilles Chem-
ical Company and the Aruba
Chemical Industry. For the sake of
clear identification, the former is
being referred to as Antilles, the
latter by the initials ACI. Antilles
is an ammonia plant and occupies
the east portion of the area. ACI
will comprise the fertilizer works.
Fronting the development on the
south is the recently-dredged la-
goon and harbor area, which is be-
ginning to take shape. The under-
water docking area has been com-
pleted and pier structure is being
formed on land's edge

THE LARGEST unit is the primary
reformer heater where the basic hy-
drogen generation takes place. At
this stage steam and air are intro-
duced into the methane feed stock in
the presence of a nickel catalyst.
The heater is lined with vertical
tubes which comprise nickel rings.
Temperatures at this stage will rise
as high as 2500 degrees Fahrenheit.
Ammonia is a chemical combination
of hydrogen and nitrogen. Hydrogen
comes from refinery gas and water,
and nitrogen comes from the air.

Lone Japanese Whaler Bunkers at Laao;: -

Little attention, if any, was ac-
corded the Nitto Maru when she
plodded into San Nicolas Harbor
recently. The tugs shoved her into
No. 2 Finger Pier and left her
there, alone. A crewman shoved his
closely-cropped head through a star-
board porthole and gazed at the re-
finery complex before him. If he had
any reaction to what he saw, his un-
changing Oriental countenance mask-
ed his feelings. Uncontradictory,
nonetheless, was the fact that this
was the first time this Japanese
sailor or any of his compatriot mar-
iners had visited Lago.
It was definitely the first time the
Nitto Maru had come to Lago for
bunkers. So? But the Nitto Maru is
a whaler albeit old and small. So?
This is the only whaler scheduled to
fuel at Lago this year. The signifi-
cance of the visit of the square and
unkempt vessel is that it alone will
be powered by Lago energy in An-
tarctic whaling grounds which are
emptying of factory ships, catchers
and blue whales.
Gone this year for the first time
in many are the huge, open-ended
Harvesters, Venturers and Victories
whose British and tow-headed Scan-
dinavian crewmembers spilled over
San Nicolas and environs and 'frivol-
ously attacked life with abandon
that would suggest a last port of call.
This, in fact, was true for months
of hunting, flensing and rendering
lay ahead of them once they cleared
San Nicolas Harbor.
Significance Threefold
The significance of the Nitto
Maru's call is threefold. First it
marks the decline of the Norwegians
in a field of endeavor they had dom-
inated for years. It cites the rise of
the Japanese whaling fleet; and
third, the solitary entry into a port
once crowded with bustling whalers
sharply defines the slackening Euro-
pean demand for whale oil. The price,
quite naturally, tracks the decline in
demand. Fish oils are replacing whale
oil in the margarine industry, and
the demand for whale-meat extract
for certain European processed foods
is weakening. The market and price
loss coupled with Japanese wages,
which average half the Norwe-
gians', have driven Scandinavian
whaling interests into desperate
straits.
Norway, this 1962-63 season, will
send only four factory ships to the
whaling areas. This is less than San
Nicolas Harbor berthed in the course
of a week or two when Norwegian
and British whaling teams were rid-
ing the crest of a thriving industry
fed by fertile whaling grounds. It's
not too long ago that the entry of
the whalers into San Nicolas Harbor
signalled much shipside activity.
Streams of visitors climbed aboard
the unique factory ships the ves-
sels equipped to process whales im-
mediately after they are harpooned.
Many who visited the ships did so
in answer to their children's plea for
a whale's tooth. More often than not

their search was successful. Leath-
ery-skinned seafarers whose deeply-
lined faces evidenced the telling hours
in Antarctic cold knew whales' teeth
brought good bounty from the uni-
nitiated. These veterans usually made
it known to the ship's visitors that
they had souvenir teeth which could
be had for a small stipend or suit-
able article in barter.


Norwegians Dominate
But these were the plush days.
These were the days when Norwe-
gian whaling men put from twelve
to fifteen factory ships into the
whaling waters escorted by hundreds
of catchers. From the decks of the
whalers helicopters lifted and skid-
ded across the Antarctic skies looking
for the monsters of the sea. The pil-
ots and observers translated the ro-
mantic, nerve-tingling cry of the
whaler "thar she blows" into the
unimaginative, mundane longitude
and latitude report via radio com-
munications to the catchers. These
fleet vessels with armed harpoons on
their prows sped to the kill.
This was yesteryear, however,
when whale oil demands were varied
and proceeds lucrative. Whale oil
formerly was used in shoe polish,
cosmetics and the tempering of steel,
and is still used, but in very limited
quantities, to lubricate delicate mach-
inery such as time pieces and cam-
eras. Even ambergis, the secretion
with which a whale covers an in-
fection much as an oyster creates a
pearl, is no longer the whaler's bo-
nanza it once was. Perfume manu-
facturers have found a chemical sub-
stitute for the ambergis which form-
erly "fixed" the perfume's scent and
was worth hundreds of dollars an
ounce.
Unsold Oil
Wages paid Japanese and Soviet
whalers are half those paid Norwe-
gians and British seamen. The Scan-
dinavian whalers find it difficult to
compete. The average Norwegian
seaman clears about $1700 during the
three-month season. The skippers of
the catchers, who usually are also
the gunners, earn as much as $20,000.
These wages in face of the concerted
whaling efforts by the Japanese and
Soviets plus about 29,000 tons of un-
sold whale oil in Norway from the
last season portends profitable whal-
ing for the Scandinavians as most
unlikely.
There will be roughly over 2000
Norwegians engaged in whaling in
Antarctic waters this season. Two
years ago there were 4500, and ten
years ago there were almost 7000
Norwegian whaling men. In addition,
there were over a thousand other
Norwegian veterans of the whaling
grounds who sailed on factories and
catchers of other nations.
The Norwegians clearly dominated
the waters around the Antarctic and
down to sixty degrees south latitude
until a few years ago. They had the
most ships and the most men, they
received the highest blue whale unit

quota, and, most important, caught
the most whales and returned with
the most whale oil. Last season, the
Japanese accounted for fifty-five per
cent of the men occupied in whaling.
During the same season, the Japa-
nese caught more blue whales than
the Norwegians 5980 to 5199, but
what was especially embarrassing to
the one time masters of the whaling
trade, was the fact that for the
second year in a row, the Norwe-
gians failed to catch the number of
whale units allotted to them under
the terms of the International Whal-
ing Commission.
The commission is made up of rep-
resentatives from each whaling
country. They sail aboard the whalers
flying the flags of their respective
countries, and it is their duty to re-
port the number of whales caught,
their sex, length, age and weight, to
the commission. The governing body,
acting on the number caught and
the anticipated whale population,
sets the number of whale units each
country is allotted.
Blue Whale Unit
Simply, a unit is a blue whale.
Equalling one blue whale or one unit
are two fin whales, two-and-one-half
humpback whales and six sel whales.
It would seem that this is an ex-
cellent way to save the much-sought
blue whale from extinction. The Nor-
wegians recently threatened to re-
nounce its participation in the com-
mission unless new agreements were
established. Principal whaling perso-
nalities in Norway have felt that the
blue whale is on its way to extinction
unless the international agreements
are rigidly enforced. The inference is
to the Soviets, who, for a number of
years, refused to submit data of their
whale catches to the commission
stating only that they stayed within
their quota. This season the Inter-
national Whaling Commission has
set the annual quota at 15,000 blue
whale units of which thirty-seven
per cent was allotted Japan and
twenty-eight per cent was granted
Norway. The Soviet Union, Britain
and Netherlands have the remainder.
Whaling excites the imagination. It
is a hard, rugged, thrilling challenge
between man and the largest mam-
mal known today. Whaling is believ-
ed to have been started by the Bas-
ques who speared whales from shore
in the Tenth Century. In the Twelfth
Century, Dutch whalers organized
the first expedition to hunt whales
It was the Dutch who created and
perfected the flensing technique of
removing the blubber and rendering
its oil. The center of the industry
for many years was along the east
coast of the United States. First loc-
ated on Long Island, the whalers
moved to New Bedford, Massachu-
setts, and made it the whaling capi-
tal of the world. With the develop-
ment of the petroleum industry in
the United States, whaling was gra-
dually eliminated.

nantly out of the water with har-
poons encased therein, when novels
are written about the chase, the sub-
ject is invariably the sperm whale.
This is the most valuable of all
whales, and it is the most vicious.
This was Herman Melville's "Moby
Dick."
The speim whale weighs as much
as fifteen tons. One-third of its body
is its head, which it uses to crush
squid and octopus against the ocean
floor before devouring them. The
sperm whale also uses its head to
charge into catchers. When hit, the
sperm turns around to see where the
harpoon came from, and then will at-
tack the ship An inspector aboard
one of the factory ships which fueled
at Lago years ago stated that he has
never seen a sperm whale act dif-
ferently when hit. He mentioned that
during one whaling expedition, sperm
whales disabled three catchers by
ramming their big, tough heads into
the ships' sterns and actually snap-
ping blades off the propellors.
Whalers are willing to run the risk
of loosening the ire of a naturally
mean sperm whale because of its oil
content. The sperm blubber contains
more oil than that which can be
rendered from the blubber of other
whales. The sperm's head, in addi-
tion to its hardness and hooked teeth,
contains a large, closed cavity which
holds a fluid mixture of spermaceti
- used in making candles and
pale yellow sperm oil an especially
fine lubricant.
Because of the sperm's speed, clev-
erness and tenacity, the whaling com-
mission rarely closes the season on
this whale. He'll have fewer pursuers
this year, and possibly less next year.

Rules governing the use of the
mats together with a set of the gen-
eral judo rules will be sent to those
who apply for use of the judo facili-
ties. Application forms will be hand-
led on a first come first served basis.


Sithoc Stops Lago Stars

In Both Weekend Games
Sithoc of Curagao, football cham-
pions of the Netherlands Antilles,
were the guests of the Lago Sport
Park Board Nov. 17 and 18 They
had a magnificent weekend, won two
hard-fought, close games, and left
Aruba still champions of the Antilles.
Lago's participants in the week-
end enjoyed all events as much as


the visitors did even though they
didn't win either of the games play-
ed. The first game was contested
Saturday night, between Sithoc and
an all-star team comprised of play-
ers from the six teams competing in
the interdepartment football league.
The visitors won 2-1.
Sunday, the Process team, winners
of the Sport Park league, took on
the visitors and lost an exciting
game, 1-0.
The Sithoc sports organization ex-
tended an invitation to the Lago
Sport Park Board to send represent-
ative men's and girls' volleyball
teams to Curagao Dec. 14, 15 and 16.
In 1961, the Lago Sport Park Board
was host to a Curaqao volleyball
team.
