Esso English Instruction Emphasizes Lago's Efforts To Promote Employee Learning FOURTEEN MEN are meeting three hours a week with Prof. Milton Saltzer in classes in English language writing. The instruction is part of an extensive program, which Prof. Saltzer will direct during the next year, designed to increase the English language skills of Lago employees. DIEZCUATRO PERSONA tin encuentro di tres ora pa siman cu Prof. Milton Saltzer den lesnan den scirbimento di idioma Ingles. E instruction ta parti di un program extensive, cual Prof. Saltzer lo dirigi durante e proximo anja. Y cu ta design pa aumenta e abilidadnan den idioma Ingles di empleadonan di Lago. A measure of a progressive and efficient organization can be found in the amount and degree of training opportunities it offers its em- ployees. Lago, throughout the majority of its years, has been a staunch advocate of employee betterment through company-sponsored training. It has promoted employees' learning and abetted employees' efforts with continuous training opportun- ities. Lago's Training Division over the years has prompted many classic endeavors in the learning experience, not the least of which was the nota- ble Lago Vocational School. On-the- job training has been a constant aid to employee betterment. There have been program after program ac- tually a gamut of opportunities from just plain learning about the physi- cal layout of the refinery to ways to perfect speech and gain ease in pub- lic speaking. Recently Lago embarked on an- struction. During the course of the year Prof. Saltzer is at Lago, pro- gramed English instruction will be created. Running concurrently, Lago's train- ing also presents itself in the form of tugmate training, police training, refinery economics course and logic seminar. These, of course, are in ad- dition to the on-the-job training which never lessens. Under Prof. Saltzer's guidance at the moment are fourteen Lago em- ployees who are increasing their skills in English writing. They will other training program that is not study in an English laboratory in the only unique but ranks foremost in its significant purpose and meaning. For the next year, Prof. Milton Saltzer will instruct hundreds of Lago em- ployees in the English language. This is the first time a member of New York University's American Langu- age Institute, with whom Prof. Salt- zer is associated, has left the New York campus to conduct English in- San Pedro Student Nurses Tour Medical Facilities Twenty-two student nurses of San Pedro Hospital, accompanied by three Dominican Sisters, saw in de- tail the facilities and operation of Lago's Employee Medical Center and hospital. The group, headed by Sis- ter Innocentia, Sister Tarcisia and Sister Regina, visited Lago Oct 18. The visitors were met at the Rec- eption Center by Severiano Luydens, public relations tour leader, and ta- ken on a tour of the refinery. The detailed explanations of medical fac- ilities came first at the Employee Medical Center. Here the group split in two. Dr. J. J. Waasdorp, senior physician, took one group and Nurse M. H. Rebel took the other. The young ladies were shown the com- plete medical center operation. The same courtesies were accorded them at the hospital by staff members there. They were greeted by Nurse D. J. Andrews and taken on a tour of the hospital. Along the way they stopped to observe equipment and facilities, watched hospital procedure, and listened to explanations by Lago Hospital staff members. northwest section of the Administra- tion Building's second floor, three hours a week for fifteen to seventeen weeks. This is one phase of English instruction in which Prof. Saltzer lectures, describes, explains and writes with his students. The pro- gramed phase will be started shortly, and it is the program that employs instructional implements. One type - visual is to see a word and words and their correct usage. The other - audio -is to hear words and to reply to words and then listen to the instructor's reply. This English teaching form is des- cribed as creating a structure and then conditioning the student to this structure. It is done with the student learning through correct responses and having his conclusions reinforced (Continued on page 8) Pension Ta Yama W. Edge Despues di 26Anja diLago W. L. For Your Own Sake Organizations, principally in the United States, are outstanding for setting aside a calendar week for the support of an idea, an effort, a project, a caution. And for one week everyone, or as many as the organization's workers can enlist, solidly supports the reason for the week. At the week's end, many of the workers and the supporters sigh a sibilant sigh of relief and return their attention to the prosaic in- terests of daily life. All too often the object lesson of the week is for- gotten as quickly and as easily as rubbing one's hands together to signify the completion of a task. This easily forgotten aspect is unfortunate particularly in light of genuinely beneficial weeks such as the recently observed Fire Prev- ention Week. Fire, its prevention or control, is something everyone should be aware of all year long, not just the seven days it happens to receive a tremendous amount of publicity and promotion. After all, fire prevention is for the individual's own good regardless of whether it is his home, his club, his community or his work place. Uncontrolled fire can be a vicious ravager of life and worldly goods. Fire need not happen in uncontrolled situations. There are a number of basic cautions that are easy to adhere to, and are just as easy to teach to and have other family members follow. With just a little caution and dismissal of unthinking, irresponsible acts, fire could be reduced to an absolute minimum. A recent safety news letter issued by Lago's Safety Division out- lined some of the basic cautions that would help prevent fire in homes. They are: 1 -Don't smoke in bed. 2 Have plenty of ash trays around the house. 3 Never put flammable liquids in bottles. Always use metal containers. 4 -Admonish children never to play with matches. Keep matches out of their reach. 5 -When using a stove or oven always remember to light the match first and then turn on the gas. 6 Look around the house, garage and workshop for paint. kerosine and other flammable liquids. Make sure they are stored properly, and that there are no bundles of paper, sawdust or oily rags about. 7 Use only approved cleaning fluids. 8 Repair all electrical installations that are frayed or broken. If they cannot be repaired, replace them immediately. Don't take chances with faulty wiring. The affair was held Oct. 20 at the Aruba Caribbean Hotel, and was attended by over 100 officials who contribute their time and energies to the conduct of sports at Lago Sport Park. Most are Lago em- ployees, many are not. They have one thing in common, though. They help organize and run the many events that cater to thousands of participating athletes and the thousands upon thousands of spec- totors who fill the stands and line the fences of the Sport Park. These are the men who score, offi- ciate, referee, time, measure. These are the men who control the gui- des, the rules, the regulations that make sports organized and their execution conforming. Without them, sports would not be. These are the men whose impartial ar- bitration and judgement help give sports and its conduct the class and respect it commands at Lago Sport Park. Singled out this year as the of- ficial who contributed heavily to the Lago Sport Park sports pro- gram was Mr. Pierre. He is a well known and quickly recognized fig- ure sitting in the judge's chair overseeing the popular volley ball tournaments conducted at the Sport Park. Speakers, left to right, in- cluded Rev. Atherton Didier, Acting Lt. Gov. I. S. de Cuba and Rev. D. R. Evans of Seroe Colorado. Auditorium Although the rain was excessive and curtailed part of the program, it in no way dampened the enthusiasm of che Methodist community and their guests during the dedication of the recently-completed Wes- ley Auditorium. Over 500 people filled the hall and heard speaker after speaker commend the efforts of the members of the Methodist Church and its minister, Rev. John A. Gumbs, which contributed to the crea- tion of this Fls. 90,000 building. As was pointed out by Ernesto O. Petronia, minister of education and culture, the significance of the building goes beyond the immediate membership of the Methodist Church and extends its usefulness to the whole of San Nicolas and surrounding areas. Mr. Petronia officially opened the building. Rev. Atherton Didier, general superintendent of the Leeward Island Methodist District, ded- icated the building to its Christian purposes. The key to the building was presented to Mr. Petronia by a member of the contracting firm. In keeping with accepted custom, a huge ribbon, which crossed the door- way, was cut by Mr. Petronia. In addition to Mr. Petronia, other speakers were F. Wernet, Aruba deputy of education and culture; Acting Lt. Gov. I. S. de Cuba; Rev. T. Johnson of Curaqao, and Rev. D. R. Evans of Seroe Colorado. The final address was given by Mr. Gumbs. He expressed his appre- ciation to the members of his congregation and the selfless way in which they contributed to the building's development. He also express- ed his and the Methodist community's thanks to industry, business and many other friends who assisted in making this "dream" come true. Mr. Gumbs stated quite frankly that there were many things yet to be done to the building and the Methodist community still faces a large challenge. It was brought out by the minister that the auditorium will not only serve the youth of Aruba but will also become the center of cultural activities in San Nicolas. Much of the auditorium's reason for existence and community sup- port revolves around its potential influencing force in the development (Continued on page 7) TUR ORADORNAN a duna homenahe na e tremendo exito di comunidad Metodista pa construi e auditorio.
