Esso March 24, 1962 March 24, 1962 '--A, X"U" B VOL. 23, No. 6 PUBLISHED BY LAGO OIL & TRANSPORT CO., LTD. PRESIDENT W. A. Murray and Safety Division Head E. M. O'Brien admire Lago's first place award in the 1961 National Safety Council contest won with the company's record low frequency rate of 0.34. The low rate earned Lago its sixth first place award and set an NSC record. PIRESIDENTE W. A. Murray y Safety Head E. MI. O'Brien ta admira Lago su premlo pa promer lugar den e concurso di 1961 di National Safety Council. cual e compania a gana cu su frecuencia tan abao di 0.34. E frecuencia reduce a gana pa Lago su promer lugar y a pone un record. Process Opeiator Receives FIs. 1825 CYI Award; Amount Second Highest For less than an hour's work, D. W. Marques, Process-Light Oils Finishing operator, received a bonus of Fls. 1825. The bonus was in the form 'of a Coin Your Ideas award, the second largest initial award since the plan's inception in 1934. The record CYI award of Fls. 5000 went to C. F Bond in 1953. Mr. Marques's ingenuity his ability to recognize a process pro- blem and arrive at a practical, eco- nomical answer that will save Lago nearly Fls 15.000 in a year's time - also earned him the title of sugges- ter-of-the-month. In addition, Mr Marques will be eligible to receive a supplemental award if Lago's sav- ings through the installation of his idea should amount to more than has been evaluated. And inasmuch as the company has announced that the capital award jackpot for 1962 will be five per cent of total company savings on all CYI's adopted. Mr. Marques also has earned a front- row seat on the capital award band- wagon To win all these awards, Mr Mar- ques came up with an idea that is simple as well as ingenious thus proving that a suggestion does not have to be complicated to lead to a major award In essence, Mr. Marques suggested the cross-connection of normal sweet- ening plant rundown and kerosene production lines Required to make the economical installation were a two-foot-length of fabricated pipe and a single valve. Because of the well-chosen location for the cross- over, and by using Lago's hot tap method, the installation was made Henriquez Will Speak At Final Engineers' Club Seminar April 3 The last in a series of Engin- eers' Club seminar discussions or the chemical industries in Aruba will feature Alderman O. S. Hen- riquez. The island deputy in charge of financial matters will talk on the future plans of chem- ical development in Aruba The session will be held in the Lago High School Tuesday, April 3, be- ginning at 7:30 pm., and is open to the public. Mr. Henriquez' address will be the fifth and final lecture on the chemical industry in general and Aruba in particular sponsored by the Engineers' Club. with very little interruption in serv- ice. Had Mr. Marques's idea called for an expensive installation, his award would have been lower as CYI pay- ments are based on savings after installation costs are deducted. An idea that costs more to install than it can possibly save the company is necessarily rejected regardless of its ingenuity. In his job of carrying out pumping orders, Mr. Marques became aware that the eight-inch kerosine line was Being used intermittently because of changes in product blending meth- ods. He was also aware of a reoccur- ing bottleneck on the normal sweet- !ening plant twelve-inch line. A pipe- line from the Naphtha Fractionation Unit had been connected to this line in the vicinity of tank 354 to route an NFU stream to the spheroid tank (Continued on page 2) Lago Earns Rate in Nati Refineria A Gana Prome Lugar den Concurso di National Safety Council E frecuencia di seguridad di Lag pa 1961, cual ta 0.34, ta tambe ms abao cu nunca desde 1950 pa compa nianan grand di petroleo cu ta con peti den e concursonan di Nations Safety Council. (Continua na pagina 2) Lago Annuitant Harvests Boi Probably one of the most abundant harvests of maishi rabu in recent years was gathered this month by Lago annuitant Adalbertus Willems. That Mr. Wil- lems is one of Lago's most industrious annuitants is another excellent probability. He has, besides the maishi rabu yield, other crops and extensive aloe workings to substantiate the assumption. But the eye- catcher at the present is the maishi rabu. Mr. Willems lives just around the corner, so to speak, from Frenchmen's Pass. His neat little yellow house overlooks a slight land indentation in which he sows his maishi rabu. This year, his hard efforts were rewarded with a bonanza. It seems there was just the correct amount of rain tempered with the proper por- tion of sun to produce what Mr. Willems says is one of the most abundant yields he is able to remember in his seventy-five years Neatly piled near his house, the stack is about three feet wide, five feet high and twelve feet long. The significance of the harvest is not only in its abundance, but as Mr. Willems explains, "there isn't as much maishi rabu grown today as was grown years ago and therefore there is less opportunity to see large harvests." "The young people don't grow products the way their fathers did," he commented. For Mr. Willems to set himself up as a comparison or example for young people would be to give today's youth an ideal goal. Mr. Willems embodies all the good there is in industriousness. He thrives on activity, and the delight he derives from fruitful effort has reward- ed him with physical being and alertness of mind that (Continued on page 8) First Place, Sets New Low onal Safety Council Contest r Employees Will Receive Ball-Point Pen To Commemorate Safety Achievement Lago's record low 1961 frequency rate of 0.34 is also the lowest on o record for major petroleum companies that compete in annual National s Safety Council contests. This information from the NSC's statistics i- division closely followed the council's official announcement that Lago - had placed first in the 1961 National Safety Council contest in pet- roleum manufacturing's group A for entire companies. When employees established the all-time record low frequency rate last year they bettered the record that the Mobil Oil Company of Southern California set in 1960. Mobil Oil's 0.38 frequency rate earn- ed it the 1960 NSC contest first place award for group A companies. Lago placed second that year with a 0.70 frequency rate which was second only to its previous best safety year in 1957 when a 0.61 rate was esta- lished. Fourteen Competed In the annual National Safety Council contests, Lago competes with major western hemisphere petroleum manufacturing companies that oper- ate more than 3,000,000 manhours annually. Fourteen companies com- peted in this category last year and established an average frequency rate of 3.22 which was slightly higher than the 1960 average rate of 2.79. Rates in the 1961 contest ranged from Lago's 0.34 to number 14's 11.85. In addition to winning the NSC's first place award, Lago has also won an Award of Honor, its fifteenth, for its outstanding safety perform- ance in the petroleum industry. The first place award is the company's sixth. Top honors were won in the joint years 1947-48 and in 1949, 1954, 1957, and 1958. When Lago finished 1957 with the then record low frequency rate of 0.61 and a first place NSC award, the company commemorated its best safety year by presenting each em- ployee with a high-quality Cross mechanical pencil on which was en- graved, "Lago's Best Safety Year- 1957." Every Lago employee will receive a Cross ball-point pen at special safety talks Monday, March 26, when super- visors will present highlights of Lago's best safety year. The pens are also engraved with a message intend- ed to remind employees of the honor their individual safety actions have earned the company. On the pen is engraved, "1961 Lago Safety Award." Employees should be aware when they receive this quality safety pre- mium that Lago achieved its best safety year primarily because of the safe work habits of each individual worker. The safety program at Lago is professionally planned and man- aged. It is backed 100 per cent by the executive committee. But man- agement is fully aware that without the individual attention to safety paid by each employee, the program would lose much of its effectiveness. The excellent safety attitude of Lago's employee force continues to make Lago's refinery the safest in the free world. Because of changes in process methods and customers' product re- quirements after this connection had been made, it became necessary to use the normal sweetening plant line to pump oil intermittently from the transfer pumphouse through this same NSP line. During this pump- ing it was necessary to reroute the NFU stream to other tankage which was an undesirable practice. By incorporating Mr. Marques's idea, oil can be pumped through the western end of the NSP line via the short connection into the kerosine production line to the spheroid tank field. This leaves the eastern end of the NSP line free for the uninter- rupted rundown of the NFU stream. The process operator's idea also will permit increased pumping rates which will expedite preparation of certain gasoline blends. When rush orders are being prepared, this can result in a reduction in a ship's delay time which adds a significant saving. In February, there were fifteen suggestions accepted. Lago Welder, Clerk Receive Thirty-Year Awards at Ceremonies Held March 14 A man who likes to work high in the sky and a well-known figure among Seroe Colorado residents were honored for their long Lago service as they sat facing members of management staff at a special March 14 ceremony. Highlights of the careers of Camille A. Pantophlet. welder A in Mechanical-Metal Crafts, and Hen- drik F. E Helman, maintenance clerk I in General Services-Admin- istration, were revealed at the meet- ing by department heads of the thirty-year employees. In behalf of Mr. Pantophlet, Mech- anical Superintendent J. R. Proterra said the thirty-year award recipient had gained a lot of tank welding ex- perience since he transferred to Me- tal Crafts in 1954 when dry dock operations were severed. "He likes to work with the birds," Mr. Proterra quipped. "Camille enjoys working on tall stacks and has no fear of alti- tude. Besides, it's breezy up there and not quite so dusty."' Mr. Pantophlet started with Lago Jan. 19, 1931, as a yard laborer. In February, 1932, he went to the dry dock operation in the Marine De- partment as a painter. There he learned such jobs as scaler, pipefit-' ter, boilermaker and welder. This led to his transfer to Mechanical-Metal I ft ld 1 1 was a former football regular and had given up that sport for guitar playing and dominoes. Host at the gala afternoon affair was Lago. The company also arranged for the seamen to be picked up at the aircraft carrier and des- troyer escort at 1:30 p.m. by chartered busses. From that time until 4:30 in the afternoon the visiting sailors were feted with plates piled high with savory barbecued meats, continuous music and plenty of iced Dutch beer. Hotel facilities were thrown wide open to the seamen and sev- eral cooled off in the sea and salt-water pool. In addition to Lago's picnic, the Dutch sailors were also entertained during their four-day visit at many island social clubs and seamen's homes.
