American-Flag Tanker Is

Harbor's Largest Visitor
With multi-color signal flags whipping in a light breeze to visually
announce her maiden voyage, the largest tanker ever to enter San
Nicolas Harbor moved slowly and majestically through the west en-
trance Dec. 29. The record-breaking visitor was the Orion Hunter, a


67,233 deadweight-ton vessel with
beam of 104 feet. Owned by the Orion
Shipping and Trading Company in
New York City, the Orion Hunter is
currently the largest American-flag
tanker afloat. She'll lose this title
in a few days, though, when the
Manhattan, a 106,000 deadweight-ton
tanker, is completed in the United
States.
When the Orion Hunter appeared
off the San Nicolas Harbor reef at
7 a.m. three tugs were ready to guide
her great bulk safely to No. 2 Finger
Pier-south. Involved m the operation
were the Esso San Nicolas and the
Esso Oranjestad and the Aruba gov-
ernment tug Arikok. It was the first
time in the history of the harbor
that three tugs were engaged simul-
taneously in the docking of a single

At Lago in 1961;
29.71 Inches Fall
If Aruba had wild ducks indigenous
to its flatlands, 1961 certainly would
have been a good year for them.
Last year was the sixth wettest
since the Analytical Laboratory
started measuring rainfall in 1929.
During 1961 a total of 29.71 inches
of rain fell on the south end of
Aruba. More than half of this year-
long total was recorded during the
last three months of the year when
7.126 inches fell in October, 7.367
inches fell in November and 4.653
fell in December. Wettest year on
record was 1950 when a whopping
44.16 inches fell.
The first year of full measurement
by the lab, 1930, saw just 7.73 inches
recorded. The year before last, in-
cidentally, was the seventh driest
year. Only 10.78 inches fell all year.
Other dry years were 1939, 1940,
1941, 1945, 1947, 1948, 1958 and 1959.
An average of about 37 inches fell
in 1955 and 1956. The next year was
about average, but in 1958 only 9.87
inches fell. The average up to 1957
was 19.52 inches.
In a period of twenty-seven and a
half hours last year, a third of the
year's total rainfall was recorded.
Hurricane Anna's proximity to Aruba
was heralded with 4.46 inches of rain
that fell in a twenty-four-hour per-
iod from 7 a.m. July 20.
The real cloud burst occurred Oct.
12. In just three and one-half hours,
a total of 5.5 inches of rain poured
on the south end of the island.

1961 In
JANUARY: A referendum challenging the Lago Employee Council's
position as sole bargaining agent for staff and regular employees
was requested by an employee group which submitted official petition
forms containing signatures of slightly more than ten per cent of
represented employees... Three of the Dutch Naval Air Force's new
Grumman trackers were flown in to Princess Beatrix Airport for
viewings by Marines, the press and island dignitaries.
FEBRUARY: Special refinery visitors were three Sisters of the
Order of St. Francis of Assisi who returned to their native Aruba
after an absence of thirty-six years... Work was well underway on
the main refinery road in the vicinity of the general shops to make
room for a new pier access road... Colorful parades in San Nicolas
and Oranjestad marked the island's annual Carnival celebration...
Capital Awards worth Fls. 4730 were paid to fifteen top CYI sug-
gesters at special Feb. 21 ceremonies.
MARCH: The company announced that Lago representation would
be clarified in a forthcoming election after the LEC informed man-
agement again of its intent to change to an independent union. Man-
agement also announced that the contract, due to expire April 30,
would not be bargained until representation preference had been
selected by eligible employees... From New York City's television
land came two plane loads of pretty models, video stars, technicians
and equipment for filming of a half-hour CBS-TV fashion show.
APRIL: A real crowd thriller was the three-mile class A bike race
at Lago Sport Park's 21st Olympiad. Down and out in a spectacular
spill went Coffy and Sweetnam leaving Casidy a clear track... At
Lago's seventh annual Management Information sessions, 600 man-
agement members heard Vice President W. A. Murray review the
company's accomplishments during the past year... Although the
contract between Lago and the LEC was due to expire April 30, it
was announced that it would continue to serve as working rules.
MAY: Feted in grand style May 13 at the Aruba Caribbean Hotel
were 540 members of management. Al Kossuth emceed the show...
Lago was awarded second place in the National Safety Council Con-
test for its 1960 performance... Amateur photographers were advised
that the deadline was close at hand for the Public Relations Depart-
ment's family calendar contest... Jack Kramer's touring tennis prof-
essionals performed at Lago Sport Park.
JUNE: Of special interest to eleven women visitors, members of New
York City's Desk & Derrick Club, was a refinery tour... A garage
mechanic, M. J. Garrido, was awarded Fls. 1450 for a May CYI that
improved crane axle hubs... Representative gains at Lago were lauded
by W. A. Murray at the annual party for representatives of Lago
employees held at the new hotel... Petitions submitted by the IOWUA
and the PWFA were declared valid by the three-man Election Board.


Review
JULY: W. A. Murray was named successor to Lago President O.
Mingus who announced his intention to retire in October... Through-
out the afternoon of July 16, Aruba's popular tingilingi boxes "ting-
ilinged" at a special concert... It appeared that Hurricane Anna was
heading straight for Aruba July 20. Heavy rains and winds heralded
the storm's approach. Fortunately, the hurricane changed course and
passed fifty miles north of the island.
AUGUST: The issue of who would represent Lago's 3512 staff and
regular employees was decided in the Aug. 1 and 2 election The
Independent Oil Workers Union of Aruba drew the majority of votes
Aruba's sixth Esso Servicenter was officially opened Aug. 12 in
Santa Cruz with ceremonies attended by island dignitaries and Lago
management representatives... Several hundred island educators were
guests of Lago for tours and information sessions.
SEPTEMBER: More than 500 employees attended a gala party at
the Aruba Caribbean Hotel held by Lago for retiring president O
Mingus... Two Marine Department records were set by the Farah
Pahlavi Sept. 7. The tanker was the largest to berth at San Nicolas
Harbor... Unveiled in an impressive ceremony in front of the Cultural
Center was a bust of the late L. G. Smith, who directed Lago oper-
ations from 1933 until 1946 and was instrumental in selecting Aruba
as the site for the refinery.
OCTOBER: Put into service Oct. 17 was No. 3 Finger Pier's south
side. Work on the 1000-foot-long pier started shortly after the Ray-
mond Concrete Pile Company of South America was awarded the
contract in August, 1960... Fifteen Lago employees volunteered to
carry the off-the-job safety message to island residents by becoming
members of a special Speaker's Bureau.
NOVEMBER: A tanker in distress, the Esso Venezuela, was as-
sisted by the Lago tug Esso San Nicolas when the T-1 tanker's engine
failed many miles from the harbor's entrance... Applications for
Lago's new tugmate training program were being taken with cand-
idates expected to start training in February, 1962.. Two groups of
government officials, the Netherlands Antilles Council of Ministers
and members of Aruba's Administrative Council, were guests of
Lago's executive committee in two separate November visits to Lago.
DECEMBER: A two-year collective working agreement was reached
as a result of two months of negotiations between the IOWUA and
Lago management .. A harbor record was broken Dec. 29 when the
Orion Hunter called. The 67,233 deadweight-ton vessel became the
largest to berth at San Nicolas Harbor .. Immediately following the
annual Christmas party at the Esso Club for pre-school children of
Seroe Colorado, Santa Claus and his Mariner helpers took presents
to all the kiddies in Lago Hospital's children's ward. Ground was
broken Dec. 10 for the Barcadera chemical complex

called at San Nicolas Harbor Dec. 29 to pick up part cargoes of
two light products. Her 67,233 deadweight tons broke the harbor

Lago Driver's Action Averts Disaster
Quick thinking on the part of G. T. Walle, air-
craft fueling driver and maintenance man in Proc-
ess-Light Oils Finishing, averted a lot more than a
collision between his tank truck and an errant
motorist. Mr. Walle, who has been piloting semi- i
trailer tank trucks at Lago with complete safety
for nearly eleven years, was delivering a load of
highly volatile aviation gasoline and jet fuel to "
Princess Beatrix Airport the afternoon of Dec. 18
when the near disaster occurred.
Traffic conditions were light as he approached -- -
the road that leads to Brazil from the main high-
way at a speed much lower than the limit. One car
was in front of his truck, which was loaded with
3000 gallons of 115/145 high octane avgas and 1000 -
gallons of jet fuel. Two cars were approaching with
one tail-gating the other.
Suddenly, with all disregard for the big Esso tank
truck's presence, the driver of the second car in the
left lane started to pass. A head-on collision was
imminent. The car was heading straight for Mr.
Walle's tank truck at a high closing speed. .

Rock. The opening contest starts at
10 am. and will continue until 5:30
p m. The number of teams in the
play this year has dropped from six
to four In addition to the St. Eusta-
tins and Golden Rock teams, St.
'.I Martin and White Wall will vie for
championship honors Last year St.
Eustatius was the Eastern League
championship team and St. Martin
was the top team in the Western
League. Because of the limited num-
ber of teams in this year's compe-
