he was promoted to a corporal C. He
came to Aruba from Venezuela and

penter helper and next was an ap-

FOR THE second time this year, aI. J. Garrido, garage mechanic A in
MIechanical-Machinist. has had an idea adjudged the CYI-of-the-Month.
This idea, adopted in September, was worth Fls. 750 to Mr. Garrido. He
suggested adding two hub retaining screws to F-2 crane's axle flanges to
reduce axle wear and field maintenance.

Winner of CYI-of -Month
For the second time this year, M. J. Garrido, Mechanical-Machinist
garage mechanic A, has been named the CYI-of-the-Month winner for
an idea that solved maintenance problems on one of Lago's mobile
cranes. The September award of Fls. 750 plus a May award of Fls. 1450
makes Mr. Garrido the top suggester this year. Top 1961 winner Mr.

Instrument helper A. Mr. Croes was
awarded Fls. 500 for his suggestion
to install a check valve in the six-
inch bottoms line above the No. 6
gas oil exchanger. When his idea is
adopted it will speed up putting the
vacuum still on stream.
Mr. Wong had a Fls. 400 Septem-
ber idea for his suggestion to install
a bypass line around the T3 bottoms
cooler at NFAR. When adopted, his
idea will lead to steam savings at
the AAR-1 preheater. Both Mr. Croes
and Mr. Wong received partial pay-
ments of their awards. They will re-
ceive the balance when their ideas
are installed.
Mr. Tromp received Fls. 250 for
the adoption and installation of his
idea to install a jig for the vise of
the engraving machine in the In-
strument Shop. The jig improves the
efficiency of the operation and re-
duces waste material.
Along with Mr. Garrido there are
seven other suggesters who have
secured a seat on the Capital Award

Committee's course in "Memory Im-
provement" are now available at the
Training Division in the Administra-
tion Building and are on bulletin
boards at the GOB, Administration
Building, Marine Office, Zone 1 Of-
fice and Employment Medical Center.
The course will be held from Jan.
15 through Feb 9 with group I meet-
ing Monday and Wednesday evenings
from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. and group II
meeting Tuesday and Thursday even-
ings at the same hours.
Participants will have the oppor-
tunity to learn many important me-
mory aids useful on the job, socially
and in dozens of other every-day ap-
plications They'll have the benefit of
being taught how to develop their
memories and powers of concentra-
tion by Dr. Bruno Furst, internat-
ional memory expert, who will be as-
sisted by Mrs Furst. In their New
York school and by correspondence
course, the couple has taught thous-
ands their memory improvement
techniques.

the auspices of the educational re-

In Aruba's arid clime, grass cut-
ting is not a common sight Even
more startling, and uncommon, is the
task of "cutting" sea glass from the
harbor bottom in the vicinity of No.
1 Powerhouse's service water intakes.
The job on hand was to rake tip sea
grass and moss in a 60,000-square
yard area flanking the screens on
the service water intake lines Moss
that thrived on the sea grasses was
causing too frequent clogging of the
screens. Best and easiest way to do
away with the moss was to get r'd
of the sea grass

The problem was handed to the
Marine Department's Floating Equip-
ment Division. Its personnel designed'
a ten-foot-wide rake to be dragged
across the harbor bottom by a 10 -
foot heavy line attached to a work
boat. A special rig was set tip on
the boat's aft end so the angle-iron
rake could be lowered for dragging
and then raised before heading back
to the launch and tug docks.

Trial Runs Made
Work started Oct. 16 when trial
runs were made. For two more
weeks, launch men dragged the area
every woik day until it was clear of
glass The rake breaks the tall grass,
a sea weed of sorts, and grass and
clinging moss ale carried away by
the currents. The most effective way
of checking work progress was by
light aircraft piloted by H. H. Garig
From a height of several hundred
feet he could spot areas that needed
more raking and also check off areas
that had been cleaned effectively.
In addition to checking the raking
progress from the air, a sight glass
was used by a launch employee to

man was kept at the intake screens
to keep continually cleaning them of
the disturbed grasses and moss When
the currents take all the raked grass
and moss out to sea it is expected
that little trouble will be experienced
at service water intake screens for

Thrift Plan Accounts Get


Additional Contributions
For the twenty-third consecutive year, an additional company con-
tribution will be paid to employees who participate in Lago's Thrift
Plan. Lago Vice President F. C. Donovan announced that the 3704
employees who are eligible will receive 52 cents for every guilder they
deposited in the plan from Oct. 1, 1960, to Sept, 30, 1961, and will also
receive a lump sum of Fls. 25. This


addition to each employee's thrift
account is beyond the regular con-
tributions made to employees' ac-
counts throughout the year.
This year's additional contribution
is the same granted to last year's
participants in the Lago Thrift Plan.
Employees on the payroll for only
a portion of the year, who left for
any reason other than resignation or
discharge, will share in the additional
contribution on a pro-rata basis bas-
ed on the portion of the year they
were on the payroll
The special Christmas withdrawal
again was made optional to all eli-
gible participants in the Lago Thrift
Plan. Payment of the special Christ-
mas withdrawal will be made Dec. 1


for both semi-monthly and monthly-
paid employees.
An example of how the additional
contribution works is this: An em-
ployee who earns Fls. 500 a month
and is in the plan for the maximum
ten per cent (as are more than ninety
per cent of all employees) has de-
posited Fls. 600 into his thrift ac-
count. With the additional company
contribution of 52 cents for each
guilder he has deposited, plus the
lump sum payment of Fls. 25, the
total additional company money now
credited to him is Fls 337.
A similar distribution was an-
nounced for foreign staff employees
in the Overseas Thrift Plan.

Tanki Leendert Girls' Guild Formed

Following the official installation of twenty-five
Tanki Leendert youths into the Antillean Girls'
Guild, members of the newly-formed troop enter-
tained parents and friends at the Tanki Leendert
Youth Club. Installation ceremonies were held in the
early evening of Oct. 27 at the Santa Filomena Roman
Catholic Church in Paradera. A program of songs,
dances, games and youth drama followed at club
headquarters. Because of the large number of Tanki
Leendert boosters who wished to attend, the program
was repeated the following evening. More than 450
were in attendance the two evenings.
The new Antillean Girls' Guild group will share the
facilities of the Tanki Leendert Youth Club. The
guild is sponsored by the Roman Catholic Church. At
the ceremonies was Rev. D. van Langveld of Oranje-
stad who specifically came to Aruba from Curacao to
establish the guild groups on the island.
Before the girls were installed in the girls' guild
they took two months' training in which they com-
pleted handicraft projects and studied for oral tests.
Minimum age for membership is ten years Leaders
must be eighteen years old or older.
After the program that featured campfire songs, a
ballet dance, group formations and a pantomime of
"Snow White," an impressive outdoor ceremony was
held in which a guild member recited the poem, "The
Last of the Caribes."


REFRESHMENTS ARE served to parents and friends at the
Oct. 27 program at Tanki Leendert presented by newly-in-
stalled members of the Antillean Girls' Guild.

Riggers Remove Nine LOF

Treating Drums in Big Lift
The removal of nine treating drums from Light Oils Finishing's no-
longer-needed west treating plant early last month called for the 100-
ton guy derrick to be put into action. The largest two drums removed
each with dimensions of ten by thirty feet and weighing seventy-
two tons -were lined with brick as well as lead and were not econo-
mically salvagable. They were loaded on the low-boy trailer and truck-
ed to the dump site south of the snowpile tankage where they were
shoved into the sea by a powerful bulldozer. The remaining seven -
lightest of which was a mere twenty-eight tons were taken to the
salvage yard.
Mechanical-Yard riggers made up a basket sling using inch and one
half steel rope with a breaking strength of 92.5 tons. Such a sling was

Product Line Goes

To Gasoline Dock
The laying of a 180-foot sub-
marine line from a point west of
the fire water pumphouse to the
gasoline dock was a team-work
operation. Involved were riggers,
crane operators and launchmen.
Used to lift the unwieldy twelve-
inch product line were a barge-
mounted mobile crane, pile-driver
crane and No. 14 derrick barge
crane The barges were secured to
each other so they could be pivot-
ed in the harbor basin by launches
after they had picked up the sub-
marine line in unison. The weight
of the line posed no problems. Its
unwieldiness did.
Th3 operation, performed Oct.
17, called for sheets of lead to be
wrapped around the line so it
would sink, and air lines welded
to the line so muck on the harbor
floor could be blown away from
the settling line.

SHEETS OF lead are wrapped
around the twelve-inch line so it
will sink to the bottom. Once laid
and filled with product, the line
will have sufficient weight to keep
it from shifting.

current Lago Sport Park football
knockout tournament in a Dec. 2
contest to decide the over-all foot-
ball champion.
In the final rounds of the inter-
departmental contests, the GOB
squad defeated the Yard and Mach-
inist teams to win championship
honors.
The football competition going on
now at the park started Nov. 7 when
two AA squads, Jong Aruba and Es-
trella, took to the field. Jong Aruba
won the contest with a 4--1 score.
Results of contests between Tropical
and Juventud Millionarios, RCA and
Dakota, and Riverplate and San Ni-
colas Juniors were not available.
Those games were held Nov. 13, 14
and 16. The winners will meet in
knockout contests Nov. 21, 23 and
28. Of the eight teams, all are class
AA except Tropical, Juventud Mil-
honarios and San Nicolas Juniors.
