Thirty. Year Men
Honored Oct. 11
For Long Service
Several "Firsts" occurred at
Lago's thirty-year awards cere-
mony held Oct. 11 in connection
with a special management staff
meeting. The two long-service em-
ployees honored, Frans C. C. Monte
and Dominico Maduro, were the first
to receive newly-designed service
certificates which for the first time
bore the signature of W. A. Murray,
Lago's new president.
The meeting was presided by F. C.
Donovan, new Lago vice president
and general manager, and the his-
tories of both men were outlined by
J. R. Proterra, new Mechanical De-
partment superintendent
Along with the new came the cus-
tomary old. Both. Mr. Monte, electri-
clan A in Mechanical-Electrical, and
Mr. Maduro, welder A in Mechanical-
Metal Crafts, joined the company
when it was in its infant stages.
Another who qualified for his thirty-
year service certificate and emblem
was Johannes Tromp, controlman in
Process-Acid and Edeleanu, who was
unable to attend the special meeting.
In greeting the two men present,
Mr. Donovan cited the refinery's
newness when they started employ-
ment thirty years ago. He added that
there were no more than 2000 em-
ployees at the time. Mr. Donovan
told the thirty-year men that they had
joined a group that numbered just
272 employees, all of whom had
achieved thirty years' service during
Lago's history.
Mr. Proterra first discussed the
service history of Mr. Monte. "Frans
knows as much about the electrical
equipment in both powerhouses as
any one at Lago," Mr. Proterra said.
"That's saying quite a lot," he added.
Mr. Monte came to Aruba from Su-

Lago Thrift Plan Payment

System Will Be Changed
Changes in the Lago Thrift Plan's system of establishing payment
dates and method of payment have been announced. Common anni-
versary payday dates will be established for everybody participating in
the plan; all payments of Lago Thrift Plan loans and withdrawals will


be made by check instead of cash.
A six-month cycle has been set up
during which Thrift Plan payments
will be paid on the first payday of
each month. This cycle will be com-
pleted in April, 1962, after which
everyone's anniversary date will fall
on the first payday in a month. In
the past, an employee was eligible
to obtain a loan or withdrawal
exactly six months to a day follow-
ing his previous transaction. Every
day a small number of transactions
had to be processed. Under the new
plan, all transactions will be handled
on a once-monthly basis.
During the six-month transition
period, no one will have to wait even
one day more than his eligibility
date for payment. Some will receive
their checks as much as thirty days
in advance.
Participants whose eligibility dates
are from Nov. 1 to Nov. 8 inclusive
can receive their payments on Oct.
31. Applications must be made at the
Thrift Plan Office prior to Oct. 26.
First checks issued under the new
system will be placed in pay envel-


opes on the first payday in November
for participants whose eligibility
dates are from Nov. 9 through Dec.
8. Participants must make applica-
tions anytime prior to Nov. 1. Those
with anniversary dates falling from
Dec. 9 through Jan. 9 may receive
loan or withdrawal checks the first
payday in December. Again, applica-
tions must be made before Dec. 1.
These intervals will continue through
April. In May, 1962, all loan and
withdrawal anniversary dates will
fall on paydays and all employees
will be re-eligible for transactions
exactly on their paydays six months
following a previous loan or with-
drawal.
Payments for all loan or with-
drawal applications received after
the last day of any month will be
made on the first payday of the next
month. For example, those eligible to
make transactions from Nov. 9
through Dec. 8 must apply before
Nov. 1. Employees failing to make

Improved piping design has con-
siderably reduced sample lag time. To
be useful in controlling process oper-
ations, sample analysis is required
immediately.
The main advantage of Mr. Wal-
ker's idea over the old method is
that the new probe installation draws
the product sample from the middle
of the pipe stream regardless of its
positioning on the pipe. Sample lnes
formerly connected to the wall of a
line pulled foreign matter into the
chromatograph causing inaccurate
readings and continuous plugging of
the analyzer. This plugging called for
daily cleaning of some standard con-
nections to assure proper analyza-
tion. The new connection, by putting
the probe in the middle of the prod-
uct stream, draws a more represent-
ative sample.
The August award was Mr. Wal-
ker's first In addition, for having
the CYI-of-the-Month, Mr. Walker
received an engraved penknife as a

Gordon N. Owen Will End


Lago Safety Career Oct. 26
Gordon N. Owen, who will leave Lago Oct. 26 for subsequent retire-
ment, could well be dubbed "Mr. Safety." During his twenty-four-year
tenure as head of the Industrial Relations Department's Safety Div-
ision, the company has won safety awards time after time. Better yet,
the number of disabling injuries has been reduced from seventy-six in
1937 to just seven in 1960.

Oct. 12 Downpour

Floods Refinery;

5.55 Inches Fell
In just three and one-half hours
the morning of Oct. 12 it rained as
hard on the south end of Aruba as it
ever has before. The refinery rain-
measurers reported that in that short
period a total of 555 inches of rain
fell. Heaviest fall was from 8 am.
until 11:30 a.m
It came down in torrents, sheets,
buckets and waves. In the Admini-
stration Building, rising waters
threatened Public Relations Depart-
ment first-floor dwellers. Appiopo
was that cry of old. "Take to the
hills boys, the dam's busted!"
It was nip and tuck in the parking
lot across from the GOB whether 01
not small foreign cars would just up
and float away. Reports from the
general shops indicated that work
had to be stopped at Metal Crafts
machine tools because of flood con-
ditions
The last time Ariha had such a
rain was in the wake of Hurricane
Hazel when eight inches fell Oct 11,
1954. This was for a twenty-foul-
hour period and it's doubtful that the
downpour was more severe than the
Oct 12 cloudbutst, which, incident-
ally, occurred seven yeals later al-
most to the day

Rejuvination of Logo Roa


IN LAGO road rejuvination work a tar truck sprays the roadway with RC-O
cutback asphalt. This not only seals the old roadway but acts as a bond for
granite chips spread on the oiled surface.

Rejuvination of major refinery roads
and streets in Seroe Colorado began
the last week in September. When the
job is finished approximately five miles
of roadway will have been treated.
Completion date for Seroe Colorado
work will be about Nov. 1. The main
refinery roadwork will commence then.
The work started Sept. 25 when the
road section between Gate 8 and Gate
5 was rejuvinated. The entire section
was swept clean with the road sweeper.
A tar truck next sprayed RC-O cut-
back asphalt on the roadway. This
acts as a seal and also is a bond for
dust-free granite chips spread on the
roadway in the third part of the oper-
ation. After the granite chips were
spread from a hopper and leveled out
by hand a road roller passed over the
roadway to give it a compact, smooth
and durable finish.
In the refinery, the main road will
be rejuvinated from Gate 2 to the Acid
Plant and from No. 5 Combination
Unit to No. 8 Combination Unit.
Another major section scheduled for
the treatment is Main Street in the
vicinity of Bungalow 177 to the cat-
alyst storage shed

Pier Access Road


Open for Traffic
Lago's new finger pier access road was recently
opened to vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Starting at
Gate 2 the road initially leads to No. 3 Finger Pier.
At an intersection just south of tank No. 88 it branches
off into an access road for No. 2 and No. 1 Finger
Piers. Vehicles can go no farther than No. 1 Finger
Pier, but pedestrians can continue on to the East Pier.
This access road runs southwest and is parallel to
the main refinery road that runs past the general
shops. It runs south of the fire truck garage where it is
at its narrowest.
Traffic entering the new access road must first clear
a control point near Gate 2. Automatic swing gates
controlled by the Gate 2 patrolman serve as a control.
They can be opened or closed without the patrolman
leaving his Gate 2 station. Only authorized employees
with dock pass privileges may enter the access road.
Seamen, of course, will use the new road to go to and
from various finger piers. A security fence along the
road prevents unauthorized persons from entering the
refinery proper.
The new road does not extend to the East Pier inas-
much as this facility has been slated for eventual
dismantling. No. 4 Finger Pier is currently in the
process of being demolished by contractors.

Park Champions Split Wins

With Curacao's Top Teams
There was standing room only and not much of that when the top
Rapid men's and girls' volleyball teams met two Curaqao squads at Lago
Sport Park Saturday night, Sept 30. When the last volley was scored the
Rapid teams emerged with a win in the girls' contest when the Rapid
Reds were pitted against Olympia, Curaqao sub-champions, and a loss in
the men's when Rapid I bowed out to Sithoc, Curacao men's champions.
The girls took to the court in the opener with the first three out of five
wins to determine the champs. Olympia easily won the first game 15-8
but the Rapid Reds bounced back and took the next three, 15-6, 16 14
and 16 14. The closeness of the last two games, in which ties were z
broken, had the crowd in near pandemonium. V
Sithoc trimmed the Rapid I squad by winning the first game then win- :
ning games number three and four. After an initial 15 3 win by Sithoc,
Rapid I bounced back with a 17-15 win in a closely fought contest. "
Sithoc easily defeated Rapid I, 15 10 and 15--13, in the next two games
to cinch the championship.
The two Rapid teams got the honors of defending the Sport Park in
the tournament when they won the championships in the 1961 Lago Sport
Park Volleyball Tournament. Rapid I was also Men's Class A champion in
the 1960 tournament and Rapid Reds was also Girls' Class champion in
the 1960 play.
In Sunday morning, Oct. 1, contests the Rapid White team defeated
Olympia. Rapid II, however, was routed by the Sithoc squad.

Park Board Election


Set for Oct. 24, 25
Ballots for the annual Lago Sport Park Board
election next week will list eleven candidates who
will be competing for five open Board posts. The
two-day election will be held Tuesday and Wednesday,
Oct. 24 and 25.
The five successful candidates will fill vacancies of
the expired two-year terms of M. Reyes, J. Briezen,
R. E. A. Martin, J. Kock and R. Q. Kemp. All five
are running for re-election. The remaining six can-
didates are R. A. Chin-A-Loi, H. Geerman, F. A.
Gibbs, C. J. Maduro, N. L. Swaen and W. Wong. Of
the eleven, Mr. Geerman is a petition candidate.
Time set for voting both days is from 6:30 a.m.
until 5:30 p.m. Voting cards will be distributed to all
employees eligible to vote at the beginning of the
first work period Oct. 24.

Baseball fans jammed the stands
Sept. 29 for the Lago Sport Park
ABBA Baseball Tournament trophy
presentations and the exhibition game
between the Class AA League Zenith
champions and Heineken sub-champs.
With a 10 2 win-loss record, the
Zenith champs received the biggest
trophy from W. C. Hochstuhl of the
Public Relations Department.
c`- Individual prizes and trophies in
the Class AA League went to R
Caster, Marlboro, champion batted
and most valuable player, R. Can-
word, Zenith, champion pitcher, and
G. Illidge, Heineken, most runs bat-
ted in. Don Bosco made a clean
sweep of individual prizes and troph-
ies in the Class A League with R.
Arrindell as most valuable player,
M Jansen, champion pitcher, and
N Wout, champion batted and most
runs batted in
