By Spontaneous Standing Ovation
A spontaneous ovation burst forth from guests assembled at Lago's
retirement party for 0. Mingus when the retiring president concluded
his emotion-packed farewell. More than 500 Lago employees stood as
one their prolonged applause lasting for many moments after Mr.
Mingus had returned to his table from the outdoor stage at the Aruba

Tanker Sets Two Marine Records


The entry of the Farah Pahlavi
into San Nicolas Harbor Sept 7

cords tumbling. The goliath of the
world tanker fleets became the
largest vessel to call at Lago, it car-
iied a ieco d cargo of clrde oil from
Lake Maracaibo
Although the Farah Pahlavi's
deadweight tonnage exceeds that of
any previous harbor visitor, the Esso
Aruba still lemalns in the record
books for having brought in the
largest crude oil cargo Her record is

He spoke with deep humility and
in all seriousness although moments
before he had been cast in another
role in which he had whole-heartedly
joined in the levity of the two-and-
one-half-hour program.
"So much for the fun," he opened.
"I've truly enjoyed it and I hope you
have." Then he turned back the years
and told of the events that preceded
his Lago employment in 1930. The
year was 1928, he said. He recalled
the night he sat down with a Kellogg
engineer. Together they had sketched
on the backs of flow charts the rough

"I joined Kellogg shortly after this
and later came to Aruba where the
designs I helped make became the
Aruba refinery. That's why I've al-
ways felt that Lago was my baby.
I've gained a certain satisfaction in
learning that those designs were
adopted elsewhere in the world." But,
he added, his greatest satisfaction has
been dealing with people at Lago,
not machinery.
"You are recognized as the more
successful people in the industry. It
is with a great amount of satisfact-
ion that I leave Lago a going con-
cern and in excellent hands," he said.
He ended his farewell speech on a
personal note. "For my wife and my-
self, we have had tremendous satis-
faction in living in Aruba. Our home
has been here for thirty years. We've
lived here longer than anywhere else
in the world. We couldn't have lived
happier anywhere else. Some of our
children were born here and all were
raised here. For that and the job we
have all done together, God bless you
all."
During the cocktail hour that fol-
lowed the president's reception in the
lower lobby, Mr. Mingus was beseig-
ed by a host of well-wishers, many
he had come to know intimately
during his thirty-one-year career as
a process man and executive.
Following dinner and hotel enter-


tanment, Lago funsters took over
and presented a program that was
the evening's highlight. Master of
Ceremonies Bill Hochstuhl offered an
"innocent" invitation to Mr. Mingus
to join him on the stage for what
appeared to be formal gift present-
ations. Having taken part in like
programs for such retiring Lago
luminaries as past-president J. J.
Horigan, Mr. Mingus approached the
outdoor stage with a 'knowing
twinkle.
He quickly joined in the fun and
had the biggest laughs of all when
Emcee Hochstuhl presented him such
humorous and "practical" items as a
horse's bridle, gilt shovel, boots, run,
ning iron, branding iron, wood plaque,
cow's horns and long underwear.
These items were particularly "prac-
tical," quipped Mr. Hochstuhl, inas-
much as Mr. Mingus would be retir-
ing to his ranch in Tyler, Texas. The
bridle was for his horse; the shovel
and boots were for use around the
cowshed.
Functional Items
Mr. Mingus received gold rubber
boots for Sunday wear and gleaming
white boots for everyday wear. The
running iron used for changing
cattle or horse brands when rustling
- Mr. Mingus said he would have to
leave behind. "If I took it to Texas,
I'd be put in jail," he joked. "It's
against the law to own one." The
branding iron with an OM design
- is quite legal.
A real-live bull, supposedly a gift
item listed in the catalog of an ex-
clusive Texas department store, was
brought to the stage by an entourage
of Aruban lads and committee mem-
bers. Mr. Mingus didn't get the ani-
mal but he did receive a pair of Texas
long horns.
Vice President W. A. Murray ad-
dressed the group before Mr. Mingus
gave his farewell remarks.

eer. He said that he started at Lago
as a youth of eighteen in TSD-Lab-
oratories in March, 1931. He went to
the Pressure Stills as a cleanoutman
later that year. "Mr. Winterdal saw
an awful lot of coke in cleanout In
those days they used to fill the
chambers up with solid black coke,"
Mr. Fisk added. He went on to say
that Mr. Winterdal was assigned reg-
ular process work in later years and
became a fireman, houseman and.
finally, levelman. "He knows his
towers well and is a safe, dependable
and quiet fellow," Mr. Fisk concluded.
S. Dirkmaat of the Lago Police
Department told the group the high-
lights of Mr. Jarvis's career. He said
that Mr. Jarvis, called Cooky be-
cause he once had been a cook, start-
ed at Lago Nov. 28, 1929, as a Dry
Dock painter. He went to the yard
craft in 1933, served in the garage in
1935 and 1936 and then transferred
to the Lago Police Department in
1940 after three more years in Mech-
anical-Yard. He has been promoted
over the years to watchman A, cor-
poral C and B and corporal A, his
present position.
All three thirty-year award reci-
pients made remarks after receiving
their certificates and emblems. Mr.
Croes said he looked back on his re-
cord with satisfaction and Mr. Win-
terdal said he appreciated the kind-
ness his superivsors had shown him
over the years. Mr. Jarvis recounted
tales of the hazards of unloading
sulphur in Lago's early years when
flash fires would oft-times occur.
Mr. Stamper started with the com-
pany Jan. 3, 1930, as a wharfinger in
Process-Shipping and Receiving-
Wharves. He was promoted to lao-
orer B in 1946, and to dockman in
1948. During his entire career he
never has had a lost-time injury

Mr. Murray said that all present knew Mr. Mingus,
some for thirty years and others for shorter periods.
"But there is one thing we all have in common
our knowledge of the excellent leadership he has
given each of us and the company."
"He has led us through one of the most difficult
periods in the history of the company. Mr. Mingus
leaves us a rebuilt refinery and a strong organiza-
tion of people to run it. This evening belongs to Odis

IT TOOK various types of heavy equipment to do the job of
refinishing the Lago Sport Park playing surface. Silica sand
was trucked to the park, spread over the area, leveled and
rolled to make the surface as near perfect as possible. To
accommodate tennis, basketball and volleyball fans addi-
tional bleachers were built south of the courts.

by the recent Lago Sport Park refurbishing project. "a

completely resurfaced. Much has been done, much time ant e
money have been expended in attempts to develop a surface ol at
the playing field satisfactory to players and spectators. It's t e
concern that has two approaches, and where one surface mal IL
be acceptable for one sport it neither may be for others nor foi o
the spectators. The wind, ever constant, is the culprit stirrin lcc

with the care of the Sport Palk. With these considerations an I
unchangeable natural forces in mind, Lago began the project o: at
redoing the playing area. o]
To start, the most used playing space up to the far reached (
of the outfield light poles was scraped clear of loose, powder ro
earth. The deposits were trucked away and replaced with silic ar
sand. The sand was spread over the playing surface, leveled an Ii
rolled. Great care was taken to insure the evenness of the play Jo
ing field. Wherever the roller left humps or faults, Lago work at

The resurfacing project finished, the Lago Sport Park pre-
nted as near perfect conditions as possible with existing
cilities Shortly after the Sport Park was reopened following
i overhaul, the improvement to the surface was immediately
-alsed by players and spectators.
Spectators also were impressed with the work done behind
e grandstand A new bleacher section was constructed along
e south side of the courts area which will provide additional
ats for basketball, tennis and volleyball fans. The area from
e west gate to the grandstand was torn up and paved to make
level walkway The pipe isles at the west gate were also re-
oved which will allow easy access to the grounds without the
convenience of protruding guide rails.
The maintenance of Sport Park facilities is a continuing part
Lago's community activity. The Sport Park is an installation
at commands a prominent role in the lives of event-minded
,ople throughout the island. The use of its facilities extends
others far beyond the San Nicolas community and its en-
rons. Annually over 175,000 spectators fill the Sport Park's
inds and bleachers to watch athletic and special events.
In the line of special events, the record attendance at the
jort Park is 7500 people, who gathered Nov. 21, 1953, to hear
anon Anderson sing The Queen's Birthday Olympiad attracts
'er 5000 spectators every year.
The large numbers of people attest the merit of the Sport

field to an exacting degree. Humps and
faults in the surface were eliminated by
Lago employees assigned to the Sport
Park resurfacing project. The silica sand
was spread by hand, raked and leveled at
spots where the graders and rollers left
unevenness.

Aruba's radio audience was presented its fourth local
station choice when Radio Antilliana went on the air Sat-
urday evening, Sept. 2. Located at 775 kilocycles on the
radio dial, the new station features a format of news
broadcasts in four languages, live broadcasts of local
musical talent, Voice of America programs, both popular
and classical recorded music and a unique "News in
Calypso" program aired once weekly.
The station's studio and broadcasting facilities are
housed in a building near the Lago Heights Club. Owned
by Sociedad Beneficencia Curacao, the station transmits
with one-kilowatt power. Its call letters are P.J.A.-8.
More than 200 community leaders attended the official
opening which originated in the P.J.A.-8 studio and from
the stage of the Lago Height's Club.
Following the blessing of the station by Bishop J. M.
Holterman, bishop of Willemstad, congratulatory mes-
sages were aired by Minister E. O. Petronia; Minister
C. Debrot; A. J. Prins, treasurer of the society, and L.
Berlinski of the Aruba Merchants Association.
Two hours of musical entertainment followed the de-
dication speeches. Such artists as Padu del Caribe, Rufo
Odor, Miss Pearl Cromarty, Roly Williams ("News in
Calypso" star), Trio Aventureros, Trio Huasteca and
Sensacion Musical were heard.
Station manager is J. B. Wix, administrator is J. La
Cruz and advertising manager is E. Faneyte. The broad-
cast staff consists of C. Morales, T. Quammie, D. Lade
and Mr. Wix.

Sept. 2 was Marco Jansen. Operating hours on weekdays are early
morning, midday and early evening.

anical-Carpenter employee. His entire
career has been spent in that craft.
He was a helper, tradesman third
class and carpenter C before ieceiv-
ing his promotion to carpenter B In
September, 1937. In May the follow-
ing year he was promoted to ca'r-
penter A, his present position.
Both men have chosen to make
their retirement homes in Aruba. Mr.
Solognier wis born in Aruba Mi.
Heyliger is a native of St. Maarten.

Lago employment started Sept. 4
for four youths who successfully
completed Lago's Industrial Prepara-
tory Program. The year-long train-
ing program was inaugurated Sept 1,
1960, so that selected graduates from
Aruba's vocational and technical
schools could learn the industrial ap-
plication of the electrical and in-
strument crafts Assigned to Mech-
anical-Instrument were Sixto Bislip,
Raymundo Amaya and Antonio
Gibbs. The fourth course graduate,
Praxedes Anthony, has been assigned
to Mechanical-Electrical.
At the same time these four be-
came permanent Lago employees,
eight new ATS and UTS graduates
were enrolled in the program's second
class. The eight trainees are Richard
Savans. ATS; Henry de Cuba, UTS;
