The dead- line for entries is Saturday, May 27, which isn't too distant in terms of finding the right sub- jects, taking the pictures, having them processed and submitting them to the Public Relations De- partment for contest considera- tion. Don't hesitate. If you are in- terested in winning Fls. 100 for each slide used, and have pictures that are representative of Aruba, send them in. The contest is open to all employees and annuitants. The Public Relations Department received 775 slides in the 1959 calendar contest. Twelve winners each received Fls. 100, and their combined work comprised one 3f the best calendars ever produced. All slides, incidentally, including those used were returned unmar- red to their owners. So if photo- graphers are concerned about the care of their prize slides, fear not. In all the calendar contests con- ducted by the Public Relations Department, not one slide has failed to be returned in perfect condition to its owner. Ant. PUBLISHED EVERY OTHER SATURDAY, AT ARUBA. NETHERLANDS ANTILLES. BY LAGO OIL & TRANSPORT CO., LTD. Off-The-Job Safety These columns are frequently devoted to the safety of Lago em- ployees and members of their families. Safety may appear to be an overworked editorial subject but what could be more important than information on accident prevention and off-the-job safety. No price can be put on a man's safety -a threat of bodily harm or the en- dangerment of human life must be combatted at all costs and if it takes a thousand words to sell a safety idea to just one person who later finds protection in them, those words have been well spent. Much emphasis recently has been placed on off-the-job safety. In- credible, isn't it, that many more of our employees are hurt while driv- ing, pursuing hobbies or participating in sports than those working in Lago's mechanical shops, refining units and on the docks? Think of the potential safety hazards in an industrial plant. They are manifold in a refinery. But they are controlled at Lago through an effective safety program. Employees are urged to work safely and they do. Lago consistently has one of the best safety records in the industry. Proof enough. It is a far different story for many employees after their shift ends. Even the most safety-minded individuals on the job change their safety habits after they pass the main gate, homeward bound. Sadly enough, it's often for the worse. They take chances on the highway. Result: compound fractures, maimings, cuts and abrasions, fatalities. They improvise in their home workshops, working in a manner that would never be permitted in the refinery. Result: amputations, electrical shocks, burns, bruises. This disregard for safety extends to family members as well. With r his vast knowledge of safety gained through his refinery experience, s each employee has the responsibility of supervising the safety habits of his loved ones. Many do. Unfortunately, a few do not. Housewives substitute rickety chairs or tables for well-secured step ladders. Re- sult: fractures, sprains, concussions. Poisonous items are left within reach of tiny fingers. An unsuspecting child samples the contents. Results here are often fatal or may disable the child permanently. Electrical appliances and electrical shop tools are often not ground- a ed. Result: electrocution or severe shock. The list of off-the-job hazards is endless. Children are allowed to run across the highway with no b thought of training them to look both ways before they cross. Toys c are left on steps where they can cause a nasty fall. Broken glass is strewn on areas where children may play barefoot. Men work under cars not adequately blocked up. Off-the-job injuries are a common com- plaint at the clinic, Medical Center and hospital. e What's the solution? As an employee, take your safety training home with you. Obey traffic rules as you would shop working rules. If a home tool requires a guard, put one on it. Teach your family how to work, live and play safely. The rewards of such action are obvious. I Seguridad no Cas E columnanan aki frecuentemente ta dedic, na seguridad di em- pleadonan di Lago y nan familianan. Ta incredible cu much mas tanto di nos empleadonan ta haya desgracia ariba camina, den nan hobby of participando den deported u ora nan ta traha den shopnan di Lago, den plantanan y ariba waaf. Y ta triste cu much vez esaki ta result malo. Nan t ta tuma chens ariba camina grand. Resultado: desgracia, menor y mas grand, y tin ora hasta morto. Resultado: amputacion, schok electric, kima- g mento, golpeamento. a E despreocupacion aki pa seguridad ta extended na miembronan di I familiar tambe. Inafortuna- e damente, algun no ta haci esey. Senjoranan na cas ta usa stoel of mesa t mancaron pa para ariba en vez di trapi bon fire. Resultado: fracture y golpe. Articulonan venenoso ta worde lagA unda much chikito por i haya nan. Un much inocente ta pasa man pe y ta purba e contenido. e Resultadonan hopi vez ta fatal of por incapacita e much pa semper. c Articulonan y hermentnan electric hopi vez no tin ground. Resul- b tado: golpe electric of schok severe. E lista di peligronan pafor di trabao ta interminable. Muchanan ta corre ariba camina sin nunca c ningun hende a bisa nan cu nan mester waak tur round promer nan c cruza. Cos di hunga ta worde laga ariba stoepi unda nan por causa h un caida serio. Glas kibrA ta word gespart na lugarnan unda much por camna pia abao. Hombernan ta traha bao auto cu no ta bon hiz y want. Desgracianan pafor di trabao ta un keho comfn na clinic, Medical Center y hospital. Kiko ta e solution? Simple. The lady, Sabana Grandi 41, is the widow deceased, who was a sandblast cor- poral in Mechanical-Yard, died Oct 25, 1959 It was Mr. Wester who was res- ponsible for the award-winning idea. In 1958, he suggested that sandblast nozzles be rebuilt rather than dis- carded because of severe erosion at the threaded ends. His original idea led to a life increase of the venturi bore nozzle from 350 to 600 hours. The proposed method consists of re- building the eroded area. Recent ex- perience has shown that this rebuild operation can be performed three times. Because of the large number of these nozzles now being used, the recent adoption of this CYI has led to considerable savings. Mr. Wester was posthumously awarded FIs. 300 which led to his idea becoming tne CYI-of-the-Month There's yet another story to tell. Mr. Wester left nine children in ad- dition to his wife. Legally they could divide the Fls. 300, but all waived their rights to shares of the award in avor of their mother. Three of the ions are Lago employees and seven of the nine reside at home with their mother. The three employees who unselfishly gave up their shares are Braulio, Process-Receiving and Ship- ping-Wharves; Basilio, Mechanical- Yard, and Thomas, Process-Receiving ind Shipping Mrs. Wester will also receive in ,ehalf of her late husband the spe- ial awards for CYI-of-the-Month winners. Sea Scouts Stage Bat Hunt... Boys Bewilder It may appear to be a one-sided contest when ten boys and two men gang up on the innocuous bats that haunt the Quadirikiri cave near Fontein. In the cave's lightless nooks and crannies, however, it's the bat that has all the advantages. The near-blind creature comes naturally equipped with radar-like senses which enable it to avoid stalactite obstacles. Recently ten Sea Explorer Scouts and two leaders went bat hunting to supply overseas scientists with bat specimens from Aruba. Armed with sticks, an escape-proof horse hair net, bat-blinding flashlights and boy noises, the youths caught nine of the nocturnal creatures. Immediately upon cap- ture, the bats were mercifully killed and plopped into jars of formaldehyde. Later, the Lago Hospital laboratory assisted the scouts in packaging the bats for shipment to the United States and the Netherlands. The scouts were cooperating with Lago's Public Relations Department which was ful- filling a request made by the American Museum of Natural History. Too Room Important Pulsating Cat Cracker and naphtha units, rumbling combi- nation units, throbbing boilers, smoke curling from stacks these sounds and sights are lasting impressions of a major refinery such as Lago. On closer inspection are seen the men who maintain refinery units and equipment. Without proper tools in good condition, these men would be seriously handi- capped in their work. Without maintenance, the refinery would eventually break down and cease to function. It's the job of the Central Tool Room to serve Lago's crafts- men. At this Storehouse facility are stocked about 8500 dif- ferent kinds of tools and tool repair parts ranging from tiny springs for adjustable wrenches to heavy-duty pneumatic pavement breakers, air hoists and even sea diver's equipment. The Central Tool Room and its nineteen employees serve craftsmen in two ways. Most obvious to those who pass the tool room, located across from the Combination Units, is the tool check-out counter. Not so well known is the tool room's storehouse section, location 22, which has a stock of more than 6000-tool and tool repair items for "sale" to Lago's many crafts. Before location 22 was moved from the Storehouse to the Central Tool Room, the tool room's major function was check- ing out hand tools and pneumatic tools to authorized person- nel. Along with this, the tool room repaired all tools, checked safety items, and maintained an inventory. Then, as now, only tools not originally assigned to a craftsman's tool box were avail- able for loan. This, of course, ex- cluded all pneumatic tools. To get repair parts, the tool room had to requisition them from the Store- house which presented delivery de- lays. After location 22 was relocated to its present tool room site, repair parts were easily dispatched to Central Tool Room repairmen. This location also stocks all new tools plus repair parts for pneumatic tools and numerous safety items. It serves the crafts by actually "selling" them tools with a blue Storehouse ticket used for pay- ment. In this location, more than Cen- tral Tool Room bins, the appear- ance of a super-large hardware store takes shape. Rows and rows of bins hold every sort of hand tool imaginable. There are fids and files; wrenches and wood saws; brick hammers and brass ham- mers; straps, sockets, saws and shovels and many other important tools. Hammers. brushes, drill bits, saw blades, screw drivers, chisels and similar tools are stocked in ail shapes, sizes and types. Pancho turned pro in 1947 and is a prime example of a player wno never reached his full potential as an amateur although he was ranked No. 3 twice nationally in the US. Al- though sports writers continually refer to Segura as a pro "well past his prime," he apparently doesn't take it to heart as he is still a tiger on the court. He has never deserted his Mickey Mantle grip on the rac- quet and is probably one of the most colorful players of his time. Ashley Cooper almost equalled Don Budge's grand slam of 1938 when, in 1958, he won three of the big four tournaments Wimbledon, Austra- lian Championships and the United States Singles. Before he turned pro in 1959, he was recognized as the world's No. 1 amateur. Peru's Alex Olmedo was ranked right up with Cooper in the amateur ranks. He won Ihe tournament he had his heart set on Wimbledon in 1959. He previously had become an overnight sensation in amateur ten- nis when he took the 1958 Davis Cup with wins over Anderson and Ashley Cooper. Earl Buchholz Jr., a St. Louis, Missouri lad, is a natural athlete and has an impressive amateur record. After winning many regional juniors honors he went on to win the Nat- ional Juniors in 1958. That same year he became the first player in history to win the eighteen and under cham- pionships of the U.S., England, France and Australia.
