Of the recipients, four were from Mechanical, two from Process anJ one each from General Services and Technical Service From Mechanical were Jacobus H. Amaya and Jose Dirksz, Esso Aruba Delivers Record Crude Cargo The phrase "they get bigger and bigger" needs no antecedent; its relation to marine activities is immediate. The reference is not only to tanker size but also to cargo. The Esso Aruba, a vessel held in high esteem on these shores, is a striking example. The majestic giant of the Esso fleet just nine months after her maiden entry into San Nicolas Har- bor brought to Lago a record crude cargo. On Oct. 14, the Esso Aruba discharged a record crude cargo of 46,610 tons or 344,035 bar- rels. The huge cargo of Oficina crude and Tigre crude was unloaded in thirteen hours thirty-five minutes at an average rate of 25,334 barrels an hour. The Aruba broke discharge crude haulage records formerly held by the Esso Switzerland and the Esso Trinidad. Oct. 14 was quite a day for goliaths of oil transportation. Three large tankers berthed at Finger Piers 1 and 2 totalled 129.262 dead weight tons. The Esso Aruba, 47,446 dwt, was at No. 1 south; Tidewater's Wafra, 46,493 dwt, was berthed at No. 2 south and the Esso Caripito, 35,323 dwt, was tied up at No. 2 north. The Wafra carried out some 300,000 barrels of clean product. This is short of the record set in June of this year by the Agrigentum. The Italian tanker had 47,937 tons or 313.285 barrels of fuel oil in her tanks when she left the harbor. The Agrigentum is also the larg- est tanker ever to enter San Nicolas Harbor. CENSUS REVEALS YOUNG, GROWING POPULATION Aruba's population is young, and it is contributing its share to the earth's population explosion. In fact, there could be over 100,000 people living in Aruba thirty years from now These facts are some of the more important ones revealed in the extremely comprehensive study of Aruba's population completed by Dr. Amos M. Hawley. The basis for the facts and population projections is Aruba's first modern census taken this summer. Dr. Hawley, professor of sociology at the University of Michigan and recognized authority in population analysis, compiled his report in a 170-page word and graph tome. His final projections led to the over 100,000 population figure. It's based on an arbitrary set of assumptions, of course, but nevertheless proposes the maximum possibility. His maxi- mum projection is based on high fertility, high mortality and no mi- gration. These assumptions in fact could produce the figure of 104,048 persons in Aruba in 1990. There are intermediary projections varying the assumptions which run from the maximum population figure to the lowest at 43,600. This low figure for 1990 assumes low fertility, high mor- tality and a migration rate compar- able to the exodus during the years The smallest nationality group list- 1955 through 1960 ed is the Venezuelans with 632 The increase by 1990 would be the persons. Other nationality groups, entire population, but primarily it too small to identify, are lumped in reflects Netherland Antillian growth. "other" and total 2108. Here lies the importance of Dr. Haw- The largest influx of foreign born ley's findings. The age composition of other nationalities in Aruba is not conducive to growth. The Netherland Antillian's is. The average age of the Aruban and Netherland Antillian is less than seventeen, which is very young and indicative of a growing population. The population of Aruba is growing steadily and according to Dr. Hawley "it is patently clear that the maintenance of the Aruban po- pulation at its present size will re- quire a constant out-flow of popu- lation." 53,199 Persons Aruba's population today is 53,199 persons, of which four-fifths are Netherland Antillians. The total comprises a multitude of nationali- ties. Netherland Antillians number 42,430 persons. The second largest group recorded by census enumera- tors is the category identified as "other Netherlanders," which totals 2922 persons. British West Indians are next with 2633, then United States' citizens who number 1426. occurred between 1955 and 1959. Settling in Aruba during that five- year period were 2681 persons. Of the number, 875 were Netherlanders and 545 from other Caribbean is- lands. Over half the number of sett- lers were women, but this is not unu- sual. It follows a pattern that has existed for over thirty-five years. Women settlers still in residence in Aruba from before 1925 through 1959 outnumber their male counter- parts 8194 to 4008. The last large migration was between the years 1945 and 1949. Again, more women than men of that period reside in Aruba today Women seem to be predominate in all population counts. Of the 42,430 Netherland Antillians, 21,640 are fe- males. An interesting aspect of the total Netherland Antillian population is birthplace, While all are recogniz- ed Netherland Antillians, only 36,870 were actually born in Aruba. Those tions for births of the second largest zation of a society. Slightly less than group of off-island born. Other Neth- erland Antillians were born in the United States, Holland, Venezuela and other countries. Aruba's 53,199 population equals a density of 299 persons for each square kilometer. This density is ex- ceeded in the Caribbean only by Bar- bados. For comparison, Suriname has a density of two and Venezuela a density of seven. Nevertheless, Aruba's density, although seemingly high, is actually modest. Density Modest Density figures to be meaningful must be considered in relation to the area make-up. In Aruba's instance, the island must be compared to an urban development. Aruba's popula- tion produces virtually none of its consumer needs thereby creating huge tracts of unused land. Less than two-tenths of one per cent of Aruba's labor force is engaged in agriculture. There are exactly twen- ty-eight farmers in Aruba. Four are women. The population comprises 10,878 households that range in average half of all units, 46.5 per cent, are conventional families of the head, wife and children. The British West Indians have the largest single fa- mily households with 43.6 per cent of their population in this category. The proportion of broken families is greatest in the Netherland Antillian group. Of their population, there are 11.9 per cent broken families. Of the entire household population, ten per cent constitutes broken families, of which the majority have female heads. In conventional families, the Brit- ish West Indian women score the largest percentage of family heads The BWI women list themselves as head of 34.2 per cent of conventional families. The Netherland Antillian women are second listing themselves as head of 20.9 per cent of conventio- nal families of that group The larg- est proportion of male heads of fa- milies is the United States families with 94.7 per cent of their number. The Aruban's attachment to his home is evident in that over half of the Netherland Antillians, 57.8 per cent, own their own homes and born off the island were born mostly size from the Netherland Antillian another 1.6 per cent is buying. on other Caribbean islands. His contribution is con- sidered one of the greatest, if not the greatest, steps in civilization's advance- ment, but history does not know who he is. Iyl The contributions of the wheel to modern-day industrial plants such as Lago or to our way of life itself cannot be measured. Without the wheel, man undoubtedly would be living in a primi- tieve state with only beasts of burden and sledges as carriers of his food and goods. Forerunner to the wheel was the method of using a row of smooth logs over which heavy objects were rolled. ^ .( ~ The Egyptians, for example, used this method to move giant stone blocks from quarries to the building sites of the great pyramids. It worked something like this: The block was placed on a row of logs and inched along toward its des- tination. As the end log of the chain was uncovered, it had to be laboriously S carried to the front of the row which, in effect, presented an endless road of smooth, round logs. This cumbersome and slow transport mode served man for centuries. Then along came our anonymous gent with the "thinking head" on his shoul- ders. From him came the CYI to end all CYIs. "Why not cut off the end of a log and then run a smaller log through the center of this disc?" he ventured. Thus we had a primitive, but workable, wheel and axle. As time passed the simple wheel was modified, changed in design riba, e dolly and improved until today's great variety ster Dump- evolved. Censo Ta I 8 ARUBA ESSO NEWS November 5, 1960 Aruba Population Indicates Enormous Growth Potential (Continued from page 1) oft made statement of "better living conditions" in Aruba Netherland An- tillians are not crowded within their living quarters in Aruba. Their room density averages less than one per- son for each room. In the Caribbean, the percentages of Aruba's population, while youn- ger, resemble Jamaica. Three per cent of the population is over sixty- five years of age; 53.5 per cent is be- tween fifteen and sixty-four, and 43.5 per cent is under fifteen. Four out of every one hundred or 3.6 per cent of the population are under one year of age. They are cared for by housekeepers who represent 17.8 per cent of the population. These same housewives also tend another 19.9 per cent of the population their children between the ages of one and six. The 9448 housekeepers aided by 1000 paid domestics tend the 10,878 households in Aruba 16,334 Children There are 16,334 children of school age, and of this number 78.7 per cent or 12,941 attend school. The proportion of Netherland Antillian children enrolled in school at the mi- nimum age is low (33.2) compared to the peak proportion (above 90) of children between the ages of eight and twelve. The enrollment declines after twelve as youngsters discon- tinue their education in search of employment An interesting meeting of proportions is evident at the be- ginning age of five and the finishing age of sixteen. Five-year-olds enter- ing school amount to 33.2 per cent of the school age population. The pro- portion goes up in the middle years and drops to 34.4 per cent at sixteen, or almost the same proportion as entering children. The Netherland Antillian majority has completed six to seven years of school. Over thirteen years of formal schooling have been completed by 5.3 per cent of males and 3.7 per cent of females. The Venezuelan in Aruba creates a paradox. Illiteracy is con- sidered less than four years of schooling, and is most prevalent among the Venezuelans. Yet with the exception of the Netherlander group, the Venezuelan has the highest percentage educated beyond thir- teen years. British West Indian fe- males have a higher illiteracy rate than do the males of their group. The majority of all nationality groups have six to seven years of education. Education Increasing It is significant and also lauda- tory to the efforts of Aruba's educa- tors that education in Aruba has in- creased dramatically over the past thirty years. Each youth has achiev- ed a higher level of education than did his predecessor. What illiteracy exists in the Netherland Antillian group is in forty-year and older per- sons. The labor force in Aruba com- prises 31 per cent of the total popu- lation, and includes persons fourteen years of age and older actively en- gaged in employment, on vacation, and temporarily unemployed but available for work. Netherland An- tillians have the smallest proportion of their number in the work force, 28.2, while the Surinamers have the largest proportion, 58.8, of their po- pulation in the work force. These differences reflect the age composi- tions of the nationality groups. The Netherland Antillian group, it is to be remembered, has a median age of less than seventeen for its entire po- pulation. Of its work force, the An- tillian median age is 34.8 years foi males and 29.2 years for females All other labor forces average around forty years of age. Although a small percentage of their total population is in the work force, the Netherlane Antillian commands nearly three quarters or 72.5 per cent of the worn force itself. The next largest share ir eight per cent of the work force held by the British West Indian The Netherland Antillians are the youngest and potentially the most vigorous participants in the labor force. The dependency ratio is high in the Netherlands Antillian group. Using under age fourteen and sixty-five and over as dependents, there are ninety dependents for every one hundred Netherland Antillians in "economically active years." No other group has as large a proportion. Inspecting the problem from another approach, for every one hundred Netherland Antil- lian workers there are 348 Nether- land Antillian non-workers. The large dependency ratio in the Netherland Antillian group is due to the unemployed. Of the Netherland Antillian labor force, 21 per cent is unemployed. Of the total unemploy- ed in Aruba, 91.3 per cent are Neth- erland Antillians. Females are un- employed much more frequently than males except in the Suriname group Employment draws more from school attenders than from the ranks of the unemployed, pointing up the neces- sity for education. Peak employment percentage falls in the thirty-five to thirty-nine age group. The lowest incidence is forty- five to forty-nine. Females reach their peak employment percentage between twenty and twenty-four years, about fifteen years before the males do. They leave for marriage and housekeeping after these peak years, and then around age forty they return to the labor market. In number, the largest male worker force is between twenty and twenty- nine Oil Top Employer The oil industry, as suspected, em- ploys one-third or 33.1 per cent of all employed workers. The government is the next largest employer with 18.7 per cent of employed workers. The highest percentage of male workers is in the craftsmen and foremen cate- gory. The highest percentage of wo- men workers is found in domestic service. The median income for a male wor- ker who is head of his family and supports his wife and four children is Fls. 8630. The average age for marriage has not varied appreciably in many years. In 1910 males married at 26.7 years and females wedded at 22.9 years. Forty years later males marry at 27.1 years and females wed at 23.6 years. There is a slight increase over the 1910 averages, but many of the intervening years produced averages below the 1910 figures. There were over 1900 births in the twelve months preceding the June 27, 1960, census date. The birth rate for the Nether- land Antillian group is approximate- ly 36.24 for thousand population. Re- production rate of Netherland An- tillian women between the ages of fifty to fifty-four years is 22.41 for every thousand in their age group, which is exceptionally high. Repro- duction reaches its peak in women between the ages of twenty and twenty-four. Growth Potential The death rate, computed from statistics gathered in the census, is 21.38 for every thousand of the po- pulation, which implies a life expec- tancy at birth of 46.8 years. The relationship of birth and death rates in Aruba points to a large rate of growth of the population. A death rate of 21.38 and birth rate of 36.24 Should give the population an annual rate of increase of 14.86 persons for every thousand of the population. Dr. Hawley stated: "The Aruban popu- lation could expect to more than I double its size in every second gene- Sration were prevailing rates of ferti- I lity and mortality to remain as they - are and were there no migration." L The high birth rate gives the popu- I nation enormous growth potential. Nearly eighty per cent or 79.7 perI cent of the population is Roman Ca- tholic. Other affiliations are 15.7 per cent Protestant, .4 per cent Jew, 2 5 per cent other, and 1.7 per cent none. The ages and male-female compa- risons of the major nationality groups on the island are enlighten- ing. There are more Netherland An- tillian women than men. There are more males, however, between the ages of forty-five and fifty and at birth. The large majority of persons older than seventy-five are women. The large number of youth equals the growing population. There are 21,640 females and 20,790 males. In the Netherlander group, the males barely outnumber the females 2068 persons to 1902 persons. The largest percentage of Netherlanders is between the ages of thirty and forty years. The smallest age group is the fifteen to twenty bracket The Suriname group exhibits an excess of males, and one of the oldest work forces. This suggests that main migration of Surinamers to Aruba was twenty years ago. There are 580 males and 468 females. The largest percentage is between thirty-five and fifty-five years. Above seventy, the percentages are overwhelmingly women. The percentage of Suriname children is small. This validates the theory that this nationality group will soon disappear from the Antl!- Ilan scene. Children of Surinamers are either living elsewhere or ale intermarrying and thereby losing their national identity.
