Bamboo Room of Esso Club Is New Location for All Retirement Luncheons Two men were honored at re- tirement luncheons Tuesday, Sept. 27. The luncheons were nothing new -they have been held on a formal basis since 1948 - but the location of these luncheons was new. Efigenio Yarzaga ay, a twenty- eight-year employee of Geneial Ser- vices, and Charles M Rumnit, a six- teen-year employee of Mechanical- carpentei were feted at the Bamboo Room of the Esso Club. It is at the Bamboo Room location that all fu- tlue luncheons will be held The change in luncheon location is one change but one probably most newsworthy to the majority of em- ployees of a number that were made last month and will be made this month The changes and con- solidations affect the Dining Hall, Industrial Relations Depaltment and Equipment Inspection Group. The In- dustrial Relations Department offices are now located entirely on the north side of the Administration Building. The offices on the south side vacated by IR will be used by EIG The retirement luncheon move to the scenic surroundings of the Bamboo Room was made in con- junction with the announcement that the dining hall would be closed fol- lowing the turn of the new year. It was also announced that the private dining room would be closed after Nov 24, and no more boarding pri- vileges will be authorized after the first of December. With the closing of the Esso Dining Hall, Lago will no longer have buildings specifically function- ing as dining halls The first dining hall, which was known as the Esso Dining Hall, was constructed in 1929 to feed bachelor employees. It was located opposite the General Office Building, and was actively used un- til replaced by the new Esso Dining Hall It was razed in April, 1956, after having served many functions including retirement luncheons and, on one occasion, an annual staff and regular employee representatives' party, which ram had forced from the golf club to the dining hall. These were not the only functions. During the early Thirties the dining hall served as the unique location -e~ SENATOR ESTES Kefauver is greeted by music of Aruba's popular Conjunto San Fernando as he disembarks from the Santa Paula during a recent cruise. The postmaster de- livered mail every evening following supper. His position was on top of a table, and from this perch he called out the names of those who had re- ceived mail. The present dining hall opposite the Seroe Colorado post office was opened in February 1956. Its future is undecided. Two other dining halls existed under Lago jurisdiction. Until their closing in June, 1946, and July, 1955, were the Lago Heights Dining Hall and the Esso Heights Dining Hall. The latter was the big one. It was built in 1942 when the exist- ing facilities of Lago Heights Dining Hall could no longer cope with the increasing number of men occupying both the Lago and Esso IHeIghts quarters. They couldn't believe what they saw; in fact, they had no idea what they were looking at. There in the fire training grounds were bulky figures cloaked in shiny silver garments walking nonchalantly through roar- ing, whipping tongues of fire. What goes on over there? One worker guessed it had something to do with Lago safety. His was a good guess and one with not too much risk of correction since a large part of Lago training deals with employee safety. Although the figures seen by the snow pile wor- kers have an awesome look, there is no mystery about their garment's design or purpose. The men walked through fire and pranced on the edge of fire wearing new entry and proximity fire suits. The men who wore the suits were Lago employees, and seen on any specific day during the past week and one-half were eight of eighty men being trained to wear the new suits. As explained by Process De- partment Superintendent M. E. Fisk to each of the ten groups of eight who underwent the training, the suits "were bought to increase sa- fety in case of an emergency......... they represent an added measure of safety in coping with fire." Mr. Fisk went on to say that this training is unique in that it is hoped it will never have to be used. Tuesday, Sept. 27, Alan M. Lari- mer, sales manager of Fyrepal, of Newark, Ohio, stepped in front of the first group of trainees. At his side were two silver-colored suits, one vis- ibly heavier than the other. Mr. Larimer told the first group, as he did all those that followed, that these were the suits they were going to talk about; that these were the suits they were going to wear near and in fire. The training course consisted of discussing the basic physics of fire and heat and the composition of the suits. In practice, the men were brought into contact with fire to instill judgement and confidence in the suits. Specific Purpose Each suit has a specific purpose and in the case of the proximity suit, it does not overlap the func- tions of the entry suit. The proxi- mity suit is confined to exactly what its identification suggests the proximity of fire. It is not an entry suit, and with it on a person can approach a fire only up to a certain distance. It is a thin lightweight suit that weighs no more than nine pounds. The material used in both the proximity and entry suits is spun glass cloth. The cloth is light, pliable and extremely strong. It is perfect for its chore since it will not absorb liquids, oils, greases; is not affected by chemicals, mildew; will not de- teriorate from age or climatic con- ditions, and, of course, will not burn. The suits are made as completely fireproof as possible by using spun glass thread to sew the material into shape. In addition, the material will not break or wrinkle, and its non- continuous pattern will not conduct electricity. (Continued on page 2) Gibson-Fageros Exhibition Glamorizes Park Tennis The succession of tennis stars who have appeared on the Lago Sport Park courts continued along its high and appealing plane Sept. 24 with the appearance of Althea Gibson, former Wimbledon and Unit- ed States women's singles champion, and Karol Fageros, bouncy blonde whose clothing is as much of an at- traction as her tennis. Their play and also the play of Janm Brokke and Victor Henriquez, who joined the two top women professionals in doubles, won the unanimous appro- Sval of the many fans packed on both sides of the court. The singles matches of the visit- ing celebrities were won by Miss SGibson The first she won 6-4 after overcoming a series of petty distrac- tions, and the second 9-7 after sub- Sduing a very aggressive and deter- mined Miss Fageros. Once Miss Gibson disposed of the truculence and annoyance that cha- racterized much of her early learn- ing and tournament play, the grace and power that enabled her to become the world's leading woman tennis player in 1957 and 1958 came into full view. She exhibited her booming serve that gives her the basis for her sound, big game. No woman playing today has the ground strokes to pass her. In her early tournament days Miss Gibson often lost because she was out-generaled. As she reached tournament maturity she made few mistakes. The re- maining ten per cent becomes con- ducted heat, and it is because of this small percentage that fire fighters are reminded to keep their arms, legs and body moving at all times while working in or near fire. The proximity suit is heat reflec- tive only. To enter fires should total involvement arise, the entry suit is used. It is much heavier because of the four-layer fibreglass insulation between the outside and inside spun glass material. This suit weighs twenty-six pounds. Included are a hard hat in the hood and one-way glass over the face to protect against infra red rays. The jacket has a baffle flap that ties around the waist to protect the wearer against flames sweeping up and underneath the jacket. The proximity hood has plexiglass over the face. Breathing Apparatus Both suits have a pack on the back of the jacket where breathing apparatus can be fitted. The belt, harness and air tank weighs thirty- one pounds and has a thirty-minute duration. During the morning sessions the trainees were familiarized with all the equipment. They were taught and practiced the sequence of dress. They learned that the pants go on first, then the large overshoes over which the pant legs are pulled to insure that water (possibly from fire hoses) runs off and not down into the boots as it would if the boot tops were outside. The coat followed, then the hood, and last the mittens which, in gauntlet fashion, pull up and over the sleeves extending to duro na laria y un glas dilanti cara pa protega contra rayonan infra- rojo. In the afternoon at the fire training grounds, the trainees practiced in ac- tual fire. They donned the proximity suit and discovered how close they were able to approach a fire without feeling heat. In the entry suits they walked through flames and found proof that it is possible to be totally involved in fire without feeling heat They also experimented with mit- tens by picking up hot objects Three Departments The training program included men from the Process, Marine and Mechanical Departments Primarily aimed at Process employees, all su- pervisory personnel of this depart- ment took the training Tugboat captains, expediters and the port engineer represented the Marine De- partment Fire suits were first developed by the Germans. Thenrs was a foil suit. and left much to be desired since the foil would crease and break The United States Navy during World War II used asbestos suits This, too, has its disadvantages. The ma- terial has to be kept wet, and since asbestos is absorbent it isn't long before the fire fighter is carrying a tremendous amount of weight. Also, asbestos is a fiberous material that must be held together by cotton, which is subject to deterioration. Fire Pix In Next Issue A complete two-page spread on the proximity and entry fire suits will be published in the next is- sue of the Aruba Esso News, Oct. 22 The picture story will relate the classroom training and prac- tice at the fire grounds given eighty Lago employees. October 8, 1960 6 ARUBA ESSO NEWS October 8, 1960 MAARTEN 4- ST. ANGUILLA Hurricane Force Leaves Wide Path Of Destruction On this page are graphic examples of the destruction wrought on the islands of St. Maarten and Anguilla by Hurricane Donna. The St. Maar- ten pictures were obtained from a resident, Guy Hodge, by H. Lopes and D. Mathews who visited the is- land to estimate the needs of hurri- cane victims. The Anguilla pictures were taken by the Rev. J. A. Gumbs, Methodist Church minister in Aruba. It is evident by these photographs that a hurricane is indiscriminate in its violence. Homes of the very needy as well as the well-to-do have been shattered, torn and flattened. A house of Gol. is not spared by hurricane winds, or is human life itself. To understand how a whim of na- ture can be so total destructive, the birth, nature and forces in a hurri- cane must be examined. The West Indies happens to be one of the world's major hurricane re- gions. Hurricanes that effect this area originate mostly near the west coast of Africa, but have been spawned in both the eastern and western areas of the Caribbean. Cyclonic Swirls Hurricanes are born as cyclonic swirls when opposing winds meet in a hot air mass over the ocean. North- ern hemisphere hurricanes occur only in summer when the intertropical meeting zone moves north of the equator allowing the south easterly and north easterly trade winds to meet and be twisted to their right by the earth's rotation. Such a force does not exist at the equator and hurricanes cannot develop there As the opposing trade winds whirl around each other in the hot moist air mass over the Atlantic or Carib- bean, a hurricane is born. A low pres- sure cell is formed with air pushed toward its center forcing hot moist air there to lift. As the air is lifted it condenses and throws off a tremen- dous amount of heat. A chain reac- tion develops. The heated air rises faster, more air rushes in to replace it, more condensation follows and more heat is released. The speed of the rising, swirling air increases and increases until the mass spins at frightening speeds up to 150 miles, sometimes more. The tremendous energy released by this continuous condensation gives the hurricane its violence violence that can push a broom straw through a plank of wood, create giant tidal waves that swallow entire costal cities, toss giant ocean vessels about like bobbing corks in waves as high as 100 feet or cause catastrophic floods when it releases its millions upon millions of tons of moisture. Though a hurricane moves along its eratic path rather slowly from ten to thirty miles an hour its wind speeds increase until it its fury is spent on a large land mass. Usually about 400 miles in diameter, hurricanes leave a wide path of destruction.
