Oil Loss Downward Trend

Although Lago's manufacturing oil losses are still above the goal of
0.40 per cent recommended by the Oil Loss Survey Group's study, the

Hurricane Donna
Like a wounded tiger slashing and cutting through a defenseless
line of beaters, Hurricane Donna left a trail of twisted homes and
bodies as she cut through Dutch, French, British and U.S. windward
islands. Not content with the unimaginable destruction she had
wrought, Donna took her knife-like winds of 150 miles an hour to
the Florida peninsula where more lives were consumed and a multi-
million dollar citrus crop literally ruined. Then the hurricane, classed
as the worst tropical storm in five years, slashed into Long Island and
Connecticut after ravaging the Atlantic Coast.
Although Aruba was spared, the effects of Hurricane Donna were
still personally felt here. Many, many island residents have loved ones
in such hard-hit windward islands as St. Maarten. Anguilla and Antigua
and, although the loss of life was small, hundreds residing on those
islands lost almost every possession they owned. How does one replace
a home that has been reduced to mere splinters of wood? What does
one do for food, clothing and medicines? These people need help and
it's up to those spared by Donna to come to their aid.
In Aruba, several groups are collecting money and donations of
food and clothing for this worthy, worthy cause. Each group re-
presents an island or area that needs our aid and fast. You may be
approached by representatives of each of these groups asking for
your help. If humanly possible we should all try to give what we can
to all who ask our help. The family in Anguilla is just as homeless as
its counterpart in St. Maarten or Antigua. So give what you can to
all those you can, but more important give for the relief of Hurricane
Donna victims.
If you wish to contribute food, clothing or money and have not been
contacted get in touch with any one of the following groups: Metho-

Tour Greet Crafts Students


Orientation programs and a refinery tour greeted
the five crafts students enrolled in the Industrial
Preparatory Program when they reported for their
first day of training Sept. 1. During the morning the
five Aruba youths Franklin Fortin, Praxedes
Anthony, Raymundo Amaya, Sixto Bislip and An-
tonio Gibbs were given a review of the training
program and instructed in safe work practices and
employee rules and regulations. In addition, they
were introduced to R. Bagwell, Mechanical-Electrical
craft trainer, and R. Beaujon, Mechanical-Instrument
craft trainer, who explained the variety of work per-
formed by the two crafts.
During the afternoon, the crafts students were
taken on a special refinery tour by S. Luydens of the
Public Relations Department

Aids Dutch Economy
On a famous dike in the Netherlands these words are engraved:
"A nation that lives builds for its future." Though the foundation
has long been laid, an important "building block" in assuring future
economic success in the Netherlands is the recently-dedicated Esso
Rotterdam Refinery. The significance of the new installation was
summed up in this apt statement by J. W. de Pous, Minister of
Economic Affairs, in the opening paragraph of his May 12 dedica-
tion ceremony address. "Not only does the realization of this pro-
ject form a material enrichment of the industrial potential of the
Netherlands, but moreover this refinery also contributes to the
strengthening of the economy of Western Europe which is marked
by vigorous expansion."
Dedicated on that spring day was one of the world's most modern
petroleum refineries. Its important innovations include nearly 100
per cent automation and air fin cooling. Automation is in the form
of extensive electronic instrumentation allowing most operations -
process and oil movement and storage control to be supervised
and controlled from just two locations. Air fin cooling is cheaper to
install and maintain than water cooling and eliminates the possi-
bility of contaminating public waters with refinery wastes.
The first of 2700 foundation piles was driven in the soft sand
May 19, 1958, by the contractor, Badger N.V., a subsidiary of
Badger Manufacturing Company of Boston, Massachusetts. By Feb.
18, 1959, the 100,000 barrel-a-stream-day pipe still was in operation
and the $53,000,000 Esso Rotterdam Refinery was partially in
operation.
This investment, which corresponds to Dfl. 200 million and
NAFI. 100 million, came from both Standard Oil Company (N.J.),
parent company of Esso Nederland N.V., and investors in the Neth-
erlands. In referring to the substantial portion invested by Jersey
Standard, P. T. Lamont, a director of the parent company, said in
his dedication day address: "The fact that Netherlands investors
have also made available large amounts of capital for this project
is a tribute to the mutual confidence that exists between our two
countries."
The project was a tremendous one and required cooperation be-
tween governments, private enterprise, municipalities and the very
men that performed the labor.
The City of Rotterdam made available the strategic site for the
refinery in the Botlek area of Rotterdam Harbor. In order to ele-
vate the site fifteen feet, the municipality filled it in with 6,000,000
cubic yards of sand.
Next came the contractor, several thousand skilled and unskilled
construction men and some thirty subcontractors and suppliers.
And from the "lowlands" grew mighty towers and stacks and
modern edifices.
Designed by the Esso Research and Engineering Company, the

For Retirement
Albert J. Hellwig, office supervisor
in Mechanical-Storehouse, left Lago
Sept. 15 for subsequent retirement
and four other employees will join
Lago's annuitant ranks Oct. 1. Re-
tiring then will be Bruno F. Werle-
man, corporal C in Mechanical-Yard;
Placido Scharbaay, mason A in
Mechanical-Mason; Placido Hernan-
dis, garage helper A in Mechanical-
Garage and Transportation, and
Charles M. C. Rumnit, insulator hel-
per B in Mechanical-Carpenter.
Mr. Hellwig joined Lago Sept. 20,
1945, as a material control super-
visor in the Storehouse where he re-
mained throughout his fifteen years
of company service. He was promot-
ed to assistant operations supervisor
in June, 1946, and then became re-
quirements supervisor in January,
1955.

Mr. Werleman began his Lago
career of nearly thirty years in
August, 1928, as a Mechanical-Pipe
laborer. He served for a short time
in 1931 in the Pressure Stills and in
1935 in the carpenter craft. Mr.
Werleman was promoted to corporal
C in Mechanical-Yard in May, 1937.
He plans to retire to his home in
Aruba.
Mr. Scharbaay came to Lago in
Aug. 23, 1926, as a mason craft
employee. He became a tradesman
second class in July, 1933, and was
promoted to mason A in March,
1939. He will make his retirement
home in Aruba.

Mr. Hernandis started as a foun-
dry laborer in July, 1937. Over the
years he served in Mechanical-Boiler,
Process-Utilities and the Pressure
Stills. He worked in cleanout in the
latter unit from May, 1941, until
March, 1945, when he transferred to
the dry dock. Mr. Hernandis was
promoted to laborer A in 1947, mach-
inist helper B in 1949 and tool room
helper A in 1954. He transferred to
garage and transportation in that
year and was named garage helper
A in 1955.
Mr. Rumnit started at Lago in
January, 1944, as a laborer D in the
mason craft where he has since re-
mained. By October, 1945, he had
been promoted to laborer C, B and
A. Then in January. 1948, he was
named a mason helper B and in 1959
he became an insulator helper B in
the insulator craft in Mechanical-
Carpenter.
