of great cities their skyscrapers outlined and measured
by thousands of gleaming lights

thousands of naked lamps the glare of furnaces and dancing
patterns of ships lights in the harbor Its like a charcoal
drawing with its deep shadows dancing highlights and subtle
middle tones
These same lights that cast and twist the geometric
shadows of the refinery reveal shift personnel as they go
about performing their various duties during the dark hours
For like the pounding surf on the harbor reef the flow of Ei
oil through furnaces and units does not cease with the setting
of the sun
Sense of hearing seems to be more acute as the crack of a
scooters exhaust is plainly heard echoing from building to
building a sound that is absorbed in the multitude of normal
daylight noises From the harbor comes the parting note
from a tankers whistle the mournful sound merging with
its whirling turbines to signal the departure of another
goliath of the sea An answering toot from a tug sends the
giant on its way as another ship slips into the harbor to take
its place
On the finger piers wharfingers hustle about connecting
discharge hoses to placate the insatiable appetite of the refining
units
The sun never sets on the Process Department Shifts
work around the clock more than a fourth of its total
force of 1012 is on duty day and night to man the units
and load and unload tankers

Without the power they produce Lago would be a sleeping
giant but this Utilities function like other Lago operations
knows no difference between day and night hours At eventide
when Lagos myriad of lights blink on an additional
drain of power is thrown on the huge turbines and generators
However strange as it may seem the amount of electrical
power needed to keep Lagos thousands of lights burning is
insignificant when compared to the kilowatt hours consumed

cently completed YMCA Softball lea
