100 Tons of Stack Lifted



On Sept 19 100 tons of stack were lifted from the horizontal
to the vertical It now towers some 2012 feet over
No 11 Visbreaker funnehng the smoke of the units two
furnaces high into the realm of blue expanse The lift is
one of the more interesting accomplishments of refinery
operations Not only must 100 tons be lifted straight up
but it must also be pulled jockeyed and finally nestled
over 24 bolts protruding from a concrete foundation The
base of the stack ringed with 24 holes corresponding to
the waiting bolts was first set down on the east side and
then painstakingly eased over on the remaining bolts The
skills of the men on the boom the crane the tractor on
the ground culminated in the tightening of each of the
24 nuts to approximately 1000 pounds pressure The actual
lifting operation sans preparation took over two hours
Once fixed in place workman set about the task of gun
niting the stack to help protect its metal The one tall
stack replacer two smaller stacks that previously tended
