As we now enter the holiday season, I wish to
take this opportunity to extend Season's Greet-
ings, on behalf of Lago's management, to all our
employees and annuitants, their families and
friends.
This year represented a special milestone for
Lago and Aruba the 50th Anniversary of in-
corporation of the company. The island and the
company have made a great deal of progress in
that half-century and we expect our mutually
beneficial relationship to continue.
During the year the startup of HDS II and the
revamp of two Pipestills added significantly to
Lago's ability to continue to compete in the pe
troleum market In addition, transshipping of
crude resumed, bringing back memories of Lago's
early days when we operated as an oil terminal
rather than a refinery.
Progress in other areas was also notable For
example, for the third consecutive year we won
first place in the National Safety Contest. The
success of the Company in all areas was due
to the enthusiastic cooperation and contribution
of all employees Of this you should be proud.
It is impossible to foretell precisely what the
future holds, although we can be sure that our
major challenges will come from the energy cri-
sis and high petroleum prices, and rapidly in-
creasing costs. However, remembering the coo
operation and effort that Lago employees have
put forth in the past, I am sure that together we
will be able to solve the problems of the future,
and thus assure the continued progress of Lago
and Aruba.

CHARLES DICKENS, the man who wrote these words, practiced
what he wrote, for he spent his entire lifetime (1812-1870) helping
make the spirit of Christmas stay with mankind the year round.
Not content merely with his gifted pen, which produced "A Christ-
mas Carol," "A Tale of Two Cities", and other classics, Dickens
used his pen throughout his life to stab at oppression and ignor-
ance.
Few of his readers today know that he helped found the first
children's hospital in London, and gave his pen, his voice, and his
money to provide libraries and opportunities for education to those
who couldn't afford it.
Through powerful stories like "Oliver Twist" and "Nicholas Nick-
leby", Dickens started the agitation that abolished public hangings
In England, razed to the ground the horrible debtor prisons, and
brought about reforms in the poor laws, prisons and municipal ad-
ministration.
Dickens was not only a novelist but a social force as well. "He
made charity and good feeling a religion," wrote one critic. "No
other single man ever sowed gentleness and charity with such a
sweep."
Dickens' power came from his understanding of and compassion
with the real people who populated his books. Some of his works
like "David Copperfield" reflect actual incidents in his own life.
From the Dickens' gallery of Mr. Pickwick, Sam Weller, Little
Nell, Fagin, Peggotty and Mr. Micawber to name a few none
stands more indelibly etched on world literature than Mr. Scrooge
himself.
In the 131 years since Scrooge first uttered his immortal "hum-
bug" (in 1843), "A Christmas Carol" has become a world favorite.
Dickens himself liked the Carol as a favorite work. And his bio-
grapher tells us that after Dickens spent a month writing it, "he
wept over it.... laughed.... and wept again.... and walked about
the back streets of London many and many a night after all sober
folks had gone to bed."
After reading the Carol countless times, a contemporary Ro-
bert Louis Stevenson wrote a universal tribute to the story:
"But, oh," he wrote, "it is good and I feel so good after it, I
would do anything, yes, and shall do everything to make the world
a little better."

30-Year Service Awards


Raymond Q. Plcus of Me-
chanical Cleanout originally
started as Sampler "B" in the
Laboratories on March 15,
1944. In July 1946 he left on
military leave and returned
to the Company as a Labor-
er in the Commissary in 1947.
He resigned shortly thereaf-
ter but was reemployed at the
Drydocks in February 1948.
He subsequently worked as
Tool Room Helper and Ma-
chinist Helper until his trans-
fer to Mechanical Yard as
Cleanout Helper in 1952.
Between 1959 and 1967, Mr.
Picus worked in various Me-
chanical Department sections
as Instrument Helper, Painter
Helper, Painter and Building
Tradesman until moving to
the Cleanout Division in 1968.
At present a Cleanoutman I
in this division, Mr. Picus
completed his 30th service
anniversary on December 8,
1974.

Teodoor 0. Croes of Pro-
cess Oil Movements, Clean
Oils, began his Company ca-
reer as a Messenger in the
Mechanical Instrument Sec-
tion on April 18, 1940. After
joining the local army later
that year, he resigned from
Lago. He was reemployed in


August 1945 as a Process
Helper and Pumper catego-
ries until his promotion to As-
sistant Operator in 1966.
Mr. Croes commemorated
his 30th service anniversary
on December 19.

Rlcardo Ras of Process-
Fuels Division started to
work at Lago as a Sample
Boy in the Laboratories on
October 24, 1940. The follow-
ing year he was enlisted in
the local army and resigned
from Company service.
Mr. Ras returned to Lago
in 1945 as a Process Helper
D in the Light Oils Finishing
Department, where he subse-
quently worked as Houseman
and Levelman before becom-
ing an Assistant Operator in
1961.
After working as Shift Brea-
ker Operator on various oc-
casions from 1968 to 1970, he
was promoted to Operator in
1972.
Mr. Ras celebrates his
30th service anniversary on
December 20.

5th Anniversary of Esso Club Building Celebrated

lith Variety of Activities November 29-December 7


Cocktail Lounge. The highlight
of the club's quarter century ce-
lebration was a cold buffet and
dance party, speeches and door
prize award presentation on De-
cember 7.
The club building, designed
by Miami architect Robert Law
Weed, was officially opened on
December 9, 1949.
The original Esso Club, built
way back in 1941, was destroyed
by fire in 1942, and between
that time and the inauguration
of the present facilities the club


had been temporarily housed in
a group of reconverted army
barracks.
The present Esso Club has,
during all its 25 years, been the
site of receptions and banquets
honoring Dutch royalty, govern-
ment officials and other local
and foreign dignitaries.
In addition, the facilities have
greatly contributed towards the
industrial, civic, athletic, creative
and social development of its
members and serves as a recep-
tion center for local visitors and
tourists during their refinery tour.

"O Little Town of Bethlehem"


Written in the Holy Land

Composed in Philadelphia


Lewis H. Redner, organist at
the old church of Holy Trinity in
Philadelphia, sat quietly at the
small organ with his fingers
wandering idle over the keys. A
melody was running through his
mind. Only a few pencil marks
appeared on the stave of sheet
of paper on the music stand.
Across the room sat Phillips
Brooks, pastor of Holy Trinity,
reading his testament. He sud-
denly raised his head, listened
and said. "Lewis, I like those
bars. They have the simple,
well-defined rhythm of the great
hymns and the feeling of our
traditional church music."
"Wouldn't it be marvelous if
we could have a new Christmas
hymn of our own for our child-
ren to sing on Christmas morn-
Ing? Do you think we could
write one, Lewis?"
"If I had the words, it would
S be easier," Redner replied.
"Maybe I have something,"
the great pastor said, "Two
years ago when I traveled in the
Holy Land, I was inspired and
put my thoughts into verses.
Perhaps I can find them," he
said.
Brooks strolled to his black
walnut desk, fingered through
some of his papers and drew
one out.
"Here it is. I never finished


it but it only lacks a word or
phrase here and there. Let me
read it to you."
As Brooks read the simple,
tender lyric which was filled with
religious feeling, the eyes of Le-
wis Redner were wetted. As the
Pastor finished, Redner turned
to begin composing music for
the beautiful verses.
Christmas was near at hand
so the two worked on into the
night to complete something
worthwhile before the Christmas
day services. As passersby
strolled through Philadelphia's
Rittenhouse Square en route to
their homes, they saw the light
burning in the church and heard
the melodic voices of writer and
composer blended in the first
singing of the new hymn.
And so on Christmas morning
in 1868, Brooks' wish of having
a new hymn for the children ma-
terialized. As Lewis Redner
struck the introductory chords,
the fresh voices of children be-
gan singing formally for the first
time one of the greatest Christ-
mas hymns of all time.
Since that eventful Christmas,
the hymn has been sung reve-
rently at Christmas by peoples
throughout the world, each year
recalling to men's hearts and
minds the little Saviour in his
modest crib at Bethlehem.

Stamps


ON A


In 1962 the United States Post Office issued the first Christmas
stamp. The results were overwhelming one billion stamps were
sold. Each Christmas since then has had its own unique postage
stamps.
1962 The first Christmas stamp in United States Postal history
was issued and depicted two holiday symbols burning tapers
and an evergreen wreath.
1963 The stamp reproduced a three-color painting of the Na-
tional Christmas Tree near the White House.
1964 Four traditional designs were printed in red and green
against a white background. It was the first United States Postal
four-in-one issue.
1965 This stamp showed a painting of a nineteenth century
weathervane of the Archangel Gabriel blowing his horn.
1966 A portion of Hans Memling's fifteenth century painting
"Madonna and Child With Angels" was used in the fifth series of
Christmas stamps.
1967 This was an elongated version of the 1966 Christmas
stamp.
1968 The longest stamp printed in forty years, it featured the
Archangel Gabriel from Flemish artist Jan van Eyck's painting
"The Annunciation".
1969 Capturing the ruggedness of New England winters, "Win-
ter Sunday in Norway, Maine" depicted a winter scene of bygone
days.
1970 Four antique toys represented Americana of yesteryear. A
religious painting, "The Nativity", was converted into a vertical
stamp.
1971 "A Partridge in a Pear Tree" brought to life the words of an
old English Christmas ballad. "The Adoration of the Shepherds"
portrayed the religious significance of Christmas.
1972 Two stamps were issued. One had a Santa Claus design,
the other was a reproduction of a painting called "Mary, Queen of
Heaven".

shaped tank truck recently acquired from Exxon, U.S.A. The 5000-
gallon capacity truck will serve as a spare unit to refuel jet planes.
Lower and shorter than the other two 10,000-gallon tractor/trailer
type refuelers, this truck has the driver's cabin next to the motor
