National Safety
For the twelfth time in twen-
ty-seven years, Lago has scored
first place in the National Safe-
ty Council Contest.
The 1973 safety award, our
third consecutive first-place
award, was won over nine other
major refineries worldwide with
an accident-frequency rate of
1.41. To mark the occasion
each employee was presented
with a leather key case late last
month.
Although Lago is a first-place
winner in the 1973 contest, this
safety achievement is by far not
the company's best record. Dur-
ing the previous three years La-
go scored a low-injury frequence
rate of .34, winning first place
twice and second place once -
in 1970. Considering that these
milestones were achieved dur-

1973 rate of 1.41 is less than fa-
vorable.
The primary goal of Lago's
safety program is to prevent hu-
man pain and suffering by pro-
tecting employees from injuries
resulting from accidents. Em-
ployees, in turn, should strive
to avoid accidents by develop-
ing a safer attitude, by using the
right equipment and tools sup-
plied, by following safety rules
and regulations and by report-
ing safety hazards.
Only in this manner can fa-
vorable results be obtained
which will be in the interest of
employees and their families.
Employees may then take pride
in their safety accomplishments
and an improved safety record.

30-Year Service Awards


- November 1974


Nicomedes Panneflek of
Mechanical Machinist join-
ed Lago as an LVS Mecha-
nical Apprentice on October
4, 1944. After graduation he
worked as a Laborer at the
Drydock, advancing later on
through the Machinist Helper
categories until becoming
Machinist "C" in 1952.

Two years later he moved
to the Machinist Section
where he became Machinist
"B". In 1962, Mr. Panneflek
was promoted to Machinist
"A". At present his job title
is Equipment Tradesman "A"-
Machinist. He commemorat-
ed his 30th service anniver-
sary November 15.

Jacobo Ras of Mechanical-
Cleanout started at Lago as
a Laborer on September 22,
1941. In 1942 he resigned,
but returned to the Company
on November 27, 1945 and
was assigned to the Pipe
Craft. Here he advanced
through the Pipefitter Helper
categories until becoming
Pipefitter Helper "A" in 1951.

In 1967 Mr. Ras became
Cleanoutman I, the position
he presently holds. His ser-
vice anniversary date was
November 21.

Calvin R. Assang has spent
his entire 30-year career in
the Technical Department
where he originally began as
a Junior Clerk II in 1944.
From 1945 to 1954 he gra-
dually worked himself up in
the Engineering Trainee and
Junior Engineering Assistant
positions until becoming En-
gineering Assistant "A" in
1954. This title was changed
to Sr. Engineering Assistant


in 1956.
Mr. Assang was promoted
to Engineering Technician
in 1965. A Sr. Engineer in
Technical Process Engin-
eering since 1970, Mr. As-
sang will observe his 30th
anniversary on November 27.


Anthony R. Tappin has
worked al his 30 years at La-
go in the Accounting Depart-
ment where he started as a
Messenger "A" in 1944. He
subsequently worked as an
Apprentice Typist and Clerk,
advancing through various
clerical positions in Financial
Section until 1960 when he
became Supervisor Cost &
Crude Pricing Section. In
1963 Mr. Tappin was promot-
ed to Assistant to Division
Head Shipping & Process.

He moved to Systems &
Date Processing Division in
1966. The following year he
became Section Head Fin-
ancial and in 1967 he was
named Accounting Adminis-
trator.

At present a Chief Ac-
countant in Controller's Fi-
nancial Accounting, Mr. Tap-
pin will commemorate his
30th service anniversary on
November 28.

Juan, who has worked in all
areas of the Inspection and
Analytical Development Labora-
tories, was promoted to Labora-
tory Assistant in 1970. As a La-
boratory Technician he is cur-
rently assigned as Shift Super-
visor in the Lab's Inspection
Section.


He hails from Santa Cruz
where he completed the seventh
grade before working at a local
bottling plant. From there he
came to Lago. Over the years,
Juan has followed a self-impro-
vement program through home-
study courses.
He is a HiFi and Stereo music
lover, who enjoys fishing and


preparing delicious dishes. On
his next vacation he plans to vi-
sit Bogota.
He and his wife Maria have
seven children, six boys and one
girl, ranging from 19 to 9 years
of age. The Ras family lives at
Canashito.

After graduating from the Lago

Mr. Williams was a Carpenter Helper A in Mechanical-Carpen-
ter. He went on retirement In July, 1959 after over 30 years of

57. Mr. Dijkhoff had been a Boilermaker Helper A In Mechani-

Teagle Scholarship Applications

Available For School Year 1975-76


Application forms for Teagle
scholarship consideration for the
school year 1975 76 are cur-
rently available at the Training
Section in the Administration
Building. These can be request-
ed in Room 265 from Stefford
Courtar who will also supply any
other information required. Com-
pleted forms with supporting do-
cuments for regular scholarships
should be returned to the Train-
ing Section not later than De-
cember 13, 1974.

The Teagle Foundation awards
scholarship grants for graduate
and undergraduate studies at
designated U.S. schools. Awards
for undergraduate studies, how-
ever, will cover only about half
of the cost of tuition and univer-
sity fees, excluding room and
board and travel expenses. To
be favorably considered for un-
dergraduate studies, a candidate
graduated from secondary
school must rank in the top two-
fifths of his or her class.

Applicants themselves must
apply to and receive acceptance
from any of the following uni-
versities:

Cornell University, Massachu-
setts Institute of Technology,
Rice Institute, Tulane University,
Harvard Graduate School of Bu-
siness Administration, the Clare-
mont, California Group of Colle-
ges which include Claremont
Graduate School and University

Candidates for nursing scho-
larships must have acceptance
at approved nursing schools in
the U.S.A. before their applica-
tions for scholarship aid can be
considered.

The total maximum nursing
scholarship award for new reci-
pients has been increased to
$ 1,500 annually from the pre-
vious $1,250.

Applications for Nursing Scho-
larship grants may be submitted
up to June 13, 1975.

Eligible for scholarships from
the Teagle Foundation are em-
ployees with at least three years
of credited service, their child-
ren, and children of annuitants
or employees who died while in
the service of Lago or other Ex-
xon affiliates. Up to three, in-
stead of the former two, mem-
bers of a family may enjoy scho-
larship assistance provided em-
ployee's salary or annuitant's
income is less than $ 12,000 per
year.
As in the past, in awarding
either regular or nursing scho-
larship grants, the Foundation
will give preference to children
of employees with a low income
