Vicente Thiel Develops Keen Eye

To Help Minimize Leak Problems

Over the past six months Vi-
cente Thiel, an Operator in the
Clean Oils Section of Process -
Oil Movements Division, has be-
come much more observant in
his work area. The reason : Vi-
cente has been on the look-out
for various types of leaks and
has been reporting them fre-
quently as part of a recently de-
veloped leak reporting pro-
gram in his division.
A recent review showed that
from 81 slips submitted in the
program, 76 were from Vicente.
As a winner in the program, he
was recently hosted by his su-
pervisors and co-workers at a
get-together at the Esso Club.
Vicente, no doubt, has many
good reasons for celebrating.
He can look back with satisfac-
tion on his contribution in com-
batting one of the major indus-
trial problems in the world, na-
mely waste. This waste, most-
ly caused by leaks of either oil,
water, air, gas or steam, can
reach gigantic proportions if
measures are not taken in time.
These leaks are not only cost-
ly, but if unattended they can
become hazardous as well.
In an attempt to conserve
more energy and further pro-
mote better housekeeping and
safety, the Oil Movements Divi-

sion launched this energy-con-
servation program in April, and
its employees were requested
to report leaks found in pipe-
lines. To make reporting easier,
special forms were made avail-
able to them at the docks, in the
pumphouses and in the Oil
Movements Control Center.
The results have been very
satisfactory. Some six Oil Mo-
vements employees have taken
part in the program.
Vicente, for one, took the
program seriously and has
made leak checks a part of his
daily activities. Not only has he
promptly been reporting his find-
ings, but he has had the enor-
mous satisfaction of seeing ac-
tion taken in the repairs of six-
ty-six of these leaks, represent-
ing total savings of $1500 a
day.
Like Vicente, we can all do
our share to help reduce waste
and conserve energy both on
the job and at home. Some of
the waste we can look out for
include : leaking valves, drip-
ping faucets, and stoves, air-
conditioner and other eletctri-
cal appliances left on without
being used, excessive watering
of plants and driving our cars
needlessly. The results are
eventually in our own benefit.
