Around this time of the year,
turtles can be seen bobbing in
the waters off Aruba in search
for a safe "landing" and hatch-
ing ground. Unfortunately, not
nearly as many as there used to

Their numbers have decreas-
ed so sharply that concern is
being felt all through the Carib-
bean that they will soon disap-
pear completely unless they re-
ceive man's protection, says the
Conservation Group of the Wo-
men's Club of Aruba.

Up to three times a year dur-
ing the breeding season (July
through October), the female
turtle comes ashore. She labor-
iously digs a hole with her hind-
flippers and deposits an aver-
age of about a hundred eggs.
Carefully covered by sand and
incubated by the sun, these eggs
will hatch in eight to ten weeks.
All too often, though, turtle-egg-
lovers dig up the eggs for con-
sumption. They also try to
catch the nesting turtle, waiting
patiently on the beach at night
until she comes ashore. It is
obvious that this unwise practice
will help diminish the turtle po-

these days. Too many nestsh
are ravaged. Even if they dc
hatch, the hatchlings face ter,,
rible natural dangers during.
their first year: frigate-birds maIr
snip off their heads, sharks an,
barracudas eat them up. Only
a relatively small percentage
ever grow up to any decent,
size. And nowadays, they als%
face even more danger fron
those equipped with speargul
and scubagear, while hotels anl
houses have been built on mose
of the lonely nesting beaches.g

If Aruba wants to preserve it '-
turtles, it is high time it begal
protecting them. Many islands 11
including Bonaire, have already
passed special laws which es
tablish certain restrictions so th
animals get a chance to mature
breed and replenish their nurr
ber. In Costa Rica and Surinar
special centers now control ce
tain turtle nesting beaches.

In the meantime, egg collei
