Letter from the President
Half a century ago, on August 12, 1924, the charter to
incorporate our company was officially executed in Ottawa,
Canada. At that time Logo began to operate as a trans-
shipping terminal, first in the Oranjestad harbor, and later
in the San Nicolas bay. Although the decision to establish
a refinery in Aruba was not made until a few years after
incorporation, Logo has since processed over 5.5 billion bar-
rels of crude. Instrumental in this achievement were many
hundreds of employees from different countries, with the
backbone of the employee body coming from Aruba.
Through the years the company has undergone many
changes, improvements and modernizations requiring the in-
vestment of several hundred million guilders. The most
striking changes came in the past four years during which a
completely new processing area, the hydrodesulfurization
complex, was built to produce low-sulfur fuels. To keep La-
go in the forefront of modern technology, sophisticated
computer equipment has been introduced for oil movements
and refinery operations, and several process units have been
revamped. Also, berthing facilities for very large crude
carriers have been built, thus resuming the transshipping
operations of our early days.
Our employee body ranks among the best trained and
qualified in the world and it is largely through the efforts
of these employees past and present that Logo has
attained its prominent position in the oil industry.
On the occasion of our 50th anniversary I wish to express
our sincere gratitude to all our employees and annuitants
for their cooperation and help which has enabled Logo to
grow into one of the largest and safest refineries in the
world. May this cooperation long endure to the mutual be-
nefit of our employees. Logo, and the Aruban community.

Captain ROBERT RODGERS was a member of the original party that
selected Aruba as a transshipping station. The first manager of the
infant enterprise, he was known for many years as "Mr. Lago".
Captain Rodgers began at Lago in Aruba on August 14, 1925 and
retired on March 1, 1939. The Rodgers Beach is named after him. Lago's first salary book: Mr. C. H. G. Eman, Oil Clerk, joined Lage

The years 1969 to 1974
brought a turning point in re-
fining operations at Lago. A
completely new processing area
rose on reclaimed land in the
Lagoon where twenty-one new
hydrodesulfurization (HDS) units
are now in operation. These
units can produce fuels with
less than 1%/ sulfur content.
The contract for the first
phase of the Hydrodesulfuriza-
tion Project was signed on Fe-
bruary 11, 1969 and the project'
was inaugurated on August 20,
1971. Announcement of the se-
cond phase of the Hydrodesul-
furization Project was made in
March, 1972.
This second phase was com-
pleted in February, 1974. The
entire Hydrodesulfurization com-
plex required an investment of
over FIs. 350,000,000.
As part of the HDS-II Project,
Pipestills 5 and 6 were revamp-
ed to process Middle East
Crude. Pipestill No. 6 went on
stream on May 17, 1974, while
Pipestill No. 5 will be completed
this month.

The Yellow Mountain at Lago: A Symbol of Industrial Progress


Glowing in the sunlight on
Lago's white land-filled coast is
a bright yellow mountain whose
brilliant color makes a striking
contrast with the surrounding
blue Caribbean sea. Making
up this mountain are piles of
sulfur in slate form produced
by the three sulfur plants of the
company's new hydrodesulfuri-
zation complex (HDS), another
step in the industrial progress
of Aruba.
Comparable in color, but cer-
tainly not in value, is another
product derived from the is-
land's own soil during the years
1824 1915: gold. Whereas
the annual production of Lago's
sulfur plants amounts to a little
over 100,000 tons a year, worth
about FIs. 4,000,000, Aruba's to-
tal gold production added up to
1,343,816 KG valued at approxi-
mately FIs. 2,613,000 in the ear-
ly days.
Although there is no direct
relationship between sulfur and
gold, this comparison clearly
shows the giant steps forward
the economy of the island has
taken since 1915. And this does
not include the value of the re-
fined oil products exported daily.
The total investment in Lago's
HDS complex alone, approxi-
mately FIs. 350,000,000, repre-
sents the biggest outlay of funds
by a private enterprise ever
made in the history of the Ne-
therlands Antilles. With the con-
struction of this new complex,
Lago is now able to maintain
its historical market position on
the U.S. East Coast.
The new facilities now desul-
furize heavy fuel oil reducing
its sulfur content from 2.5 per
cent to a significantly lower le-
vel, ranging between .3 and 1
per cent which meets U.S. East
Coast legal requirements.
Inaugurated in August, 1971,
the first phase of the HDS com-
plex (HDS-I) has a design ca-

pacity of 155,000 barrels a day
and the HDS-II, which went in-
to operation in February, 1974,
brought the total production ca-
pacity to 265,000 barrels of low
sulfur fuel oil per day.
What was once causing smog,
is taken out of the oil and
through the desulfurization pro-
cess it is converted into the
bright yellow sulfur that is stack-
ed up on the Lago coast. This


sulfur is sold for use in the ma-
nufacture of fertilizers.

ons Taking Giant Steps Ahead
From a small transshipment operation in the Oranjestad Harbor In
1924, where the tanker "Ambroslo" can be seen (left picture), the
Lago shipping operations developed into an oil port in San Nico-
las capable of accommodating seven tankers, including some of
over 90,000 deadweight tons, such as the "Dorios". At one time,
Lago also had its own dry-dock for small tankers. Recently Lago
shipping operations, as in the earlier days, again include crudei
transshipment through its new Seaberth where the VLCC "Essoj
Cambria" can be seen. Assisting in the harbor movements are the'
Lago tugs Esso San Nicolas and Esso Oranjestad, both manned
by local crew.
