The fire extinguisher provides the killer, Dr the means to remove the oxy- Jen that nourishes the fire. As (nown, the fire triangle consists 3f HEAT, FUEL and OXYGEN. If any one of these is eliminated, here is no fire. Extinguishers ire designed mainly to eliminate he oxygen supply to a fire and o help remove the heat. Lago has several types of por- able fire extinguishers to com- )at small fires. Some 1200 of hese portable units are spread II over the process units, offi- :es and other locations through- ut the refinery. All the red- ainted cylinders are like silent uards which are ready to help n any small fire emergencies. oome 600 of these portable ex- nguishers are of the Carbon dioxidee (CO2) type, while over 50 are Dry Chemical units. All iese extinguishers 'can be used n fires in flammable liquids, ases and greases where oxy- en-exclusion is essential and n fires involving energized elec- *ical equipment and wiring. The company also has a limit- d number of water pressurized xtinguisher and Halon-1301 type nits These Halon cylinders re used especially for fires on computer equipment. Most important of all, every- ne should be able to use the extinguishers whenever a small re breaks out. The operation of these porta- Ile extinguishers is simple : First, pull out the pin, then old the nozzle or horn directed > the base of the fire, and press le lever. For dry chemical units, before dressing the lever, punch the 02 cartridge to pressurize the cylinder to about 250 Ibs. The portable extinguishers Ire easy to carry on short dis- nces as they weigh between 5 s. and 55 Ibs. Some precau- ons to take include : Try out e unit first before approaching re Silent Guards You Stifle Fires the fire, and, when activated, never hold the hose directed on you or any other person. Ano- ther important point is knowing where the extinguishers are lo- cated closest to your work loca- tion. Although Lago's extinguishers are checked frequently (for in- stance, at process units at least every week), we all can help by reporting broken seals or any defects noted on the extinguish- er and by having the Fire Sec- tion refill the unit each time it has been used or when the car- tridge has been punched. As part of regular maintenance, each extinguisher is checked thoroughly at least once a year and every five years hydrostatic tests are made on the cylinders. One thing to remember is that extinguishers must not be relo- cated from their designated place, and that for any special hot work requiring an extin- guisher, an extra unit should be requested from the Fire Section. Don't grab the one just nearby In any type of fire, rapid ac- tion counts.... but the best ac- tion is to prevent a fire from starting.
