Protect Our Natural Resources Aruba's natural resources take a number of forms. Whatever they may be, it's the task of every citizen to help protect them. Our natural resources are not all hidden in the ground, but some are. Take, for instance, the remnants of early civiliza, tion found in the ground at various places. They all have their historic value. They are about the only resources that tell us about the early inhabitants, the Arowak Indians. Therefore, any artifacts found that could give more information about the early cultures should be preserved and handled with care. Other natural resources are our fine beaches, caves, and In- dian scripts on rocks and natural rock formations. These should be kept clean and undamaged. Friendliness of the local population is another asset for Aru- ba. In view of our ever-growing tourist industry, this is an es- pecially valuable resource of future economic growth. The island has always been known for its cleanliness. We can all contribute towards a cleaner environment by not litter- ing the streets with empty cans, bottles and scraps of paper, Don't stop at your own home, but help keep Aruba's good name! All of these resources should be considered in terms of their value to the community. We can all only gain by protecting them. Are you doing your share ? Proteha Nos Recursonan Natural Aruba su recursonan natural tin hopi forma. No ta import kiko nan ta, obligacion di tur ciudadano ta pa proteha nan. ARUBAESSONEWSApril 5, 1974 Retiree Jacobo Boekhoudt Proudly Displays Harvest of Small Maize Around February and March this year, it was harvest time for several local farmers who cultivated and planted their "cu- nucu" (cornfield) with Indian corn or millet, called "mashi rabo." One o4 them was Jacobo Boekhoudt, a Lago retiree who lives at Koribori 4, near Ayo (Paradera District). A Welder "A" in Mechanical's Metal Trades-Welding when he retired in April, 1962 after 29 years of service, Jacobo ever since each year dedicates some time to plant Indian corn on a 2-hectare field. Last year after the rainfalls of October, he sowed the corn seed in the age-old way of dig- ging rows of 3-inch deep holes about one meter apart, which are then covered with dirt, af- ter weeding the planted area, the grasslike plant grew to a man's height and was ready for harvesting in about four months. The ears with the white-like kernels and the stalk are then cut with a machete at about two to four inches from the ground. The stalks are placed on stacks to allow the grain to dry still more. Subsequently, the ears are cut from the stalks and placed into a pile, called "parapeta". In the earlier days, the grain tassels were stored in barns and when- ever needed, a bunch of tassels was threshed in a bag to sepa- rate the corn from the husk. The disadvantage of this system is that the pile of grain tassels would not last more than a year without being attacked by in- sects and rodents. To offset this, since a few years the farmers, including Ja- cobo, thresh all the grain tassels and keep the clean grains in air-tight steel drums just out in the open air. With this system, the Indian corn can be kept for several years in good condition. An improvement in the old planting system has also been introduced by using a planting machine. After the land is me- chanically ploughed, a planting machine is used to sow the land in a minimum of time by insert- ing four to five seeds into each hole. Through this system, two hectares of land can be plough- ed and planted in about half a day at a low cost. Another step ahead is the Lago retiree Jacobo Boekhoudt with his harvest of Indian corn. This pile when threshed will fill about four drums with clean grains. a fairly new way of preserving the crop. Pensionista di Lago Jacobo Boekhoudt ta aki cu su cosecha di Mal- shi Rabo. DECEASED ANNUITANTS JOSEPH M. RICHARDS died in Aruba on January 5, 1974 at the age of 61. The gas which our wives are using at home for cooking, which gas comes from Lago, has a very bad odor when you buy a bottle these days. And when you report this to the Aruba Gas Supply and ask them to come and change the cylinder, they won't come to change it. I feel this gas Is against hu- man health because when- ever you Inhale it for some time, the bad odor gives you a headache. A. We have thoroughly investi- gated the customer's com- plaint and found that the odor referred to was some- what stronger than normal the last few days. This situa- tion has been remedied in the meantime, and we since- rely regret the inconvenien- ces it may have caused. As was explained in the Oc- tober 5, 1973 issue of the Aruba Esso News, one of the many safety features provid- ed as protection to customers using this gas is the addi- tion of an odorant to the gas, which is unmistakable in nature, to facilitate finding small leaks in the cylinder and/or stove connections. 0. Why does not Lago Manage- ment let local employees train for about six months with the pilots so they can bring in and take out ships in the Lago harbor, just like Lago has trained the local employees for tug captain? A. Good question! Lago does intend to train Arubans to become Pilots, or Docking Masters as they will be call- ed. Three men have already been named as trainees: Ramiro Gil, Sonny Hoo, and Celestino Semeleer. Q. Please stop this program, be- cause It's more than two weeks already that we did not get a reply to our quest- ion. Better stop it then. A. As we stated on several oc- casions in the past, all ques- tions are answered, except those of a personal nature. Instead of discontinuing the program, we would appre- ciate your help in keeping this channel of communica- tion open. You can do this by stating the specific ques- tion which perhaps so far has remained unanswered. It might have been one of a personal nature. P.
