Eight Men Advance in Mechanical; One in I.R. Jan. 1


Nine more employees assum-
ed a higher post in their res-
pective departments effective
January 1, 1974. Rosendo A.
Nicolaas of the Industrial Rela-
tions Department became Sec-
tion Head- Personnel, replacing
Alex Hassell who on the same
date became Section Head -
Plans. Attaining management
status in the Mechanical Engin-
eering Division were Deonisio
R. Henriquez and Victor J.
Tromp, who were promoted to
Engineering Technician in the
Equipment Inspection Section,
while Lucio R. Wever advanced
to Engineering Technician in th
Contract Development Section.
Also joining management
ranks were Guillermo Arendsz,


Ricardo R. de Mey, and Barto-
lomeo M. Romano, who moved
up to Mechanical Supervisor in
the Refinery Maintenance &
Planning Division, and Pedro A.
Tromp and William O. Woodley
who advanced to Mechanical
Supervisor in the Construction &
Turnaround/ Facilities Division.
A 1953 LVS graduate, Rosen-
do A. ("Nick") Nicolaas left
Aruba with a Lago Scholarship
grant in 1957. Following a one-
year preparatory program at the
Peacham Academy, he studied
at the University of Vermont
whe.e he obtained his B.S. de-
gree in Commerce and Econom-
ics, majoring in Industrial Man-
agement in 1963.
That same year he was em-

he progressed through the
pipefitter categories until his
advancement to Pipefitter
"A" class in 1953.
In 1967, Mr. Figaroa was
named Metal Tradesman "A"
in the Mechanical Metal
Trades Section. Mr. Figaroa
celebrated his 30th service
anniversary on January 7,
1974.

gan his Lago employment as

nical- Paint Section thirty
years ago. In 1949 he moved
to Receiving & Shipping,

sistant in 1966. Nick has acted
several times as Section Head
in the Personnel Office and also
in the Training Division. In 1965,
he assisted the Aruba Chemical
Industries' I.R. Dept. during a
six-month special assignment.
At Lago, Nick followed several
management courses and the Job
Training Instructor's Course. In
1968 he attended a two-week
Trainer's Institute at the Uni-
versity of Wisconsin. He is past
Secretary of the Lago Science
Fair Committee and has served
on the Board of Administration
and the Selection Advisory Com-
mittee of the Lago Scholarship
Foundation. He is past mem-
ber of the Lago Educational As-
sistance Program and the Lago
Special Educational Program
for Outstanding Students. He is
currently member of the Home
Building Foundation and the
Mortgage Advisory Committee.

composer Rufo Wever, Lucio
plays the cuatro and raspa in his
brother's combo on TV pro-
grams. With the group, Lucio
traveled to Curacao, Costa Rica
and Puerto Rico. This year he
plans to visit Colombia with his
family.
Ricardo R. ("Rufo") De Mey
joined the Company as a Mes-
senger "B" in the TSD, Lab No.
1 in 1959 Later he transferred
to Mechanical Administration,
where he advanced to Jr. Engin-
eering Assistant "B" in 1962
In 1966 he became an Engineer-
ing Assistant "B" and in 1971
he advanced to Engineering As-
sistant "A". Most recently, he

New Long-Neck Giraffe Truck Aids


In Fast Work at
The latest addition to Lago's
mechanical "zoo" is a heavy-
duty "giraffe" truck. With a 70-
ft. long articulated boom, the
new lifting equipment will be li-
terally looming over the other
four of its species, which have
a reaching capacity of only 35
feet.
A Mobile "Hi-Ranger" Aerial
Tower, it was acquired by the
Mechanical Engineering Divi-
sion for the Mechanical Refi-
nery Maintenance & Planning
Division. It will also be used ex-
tensively by the Equipment Ins-
pection Section personnel. One
of the most modern lifting equip-
ment now on the market, this
unit is mounted on a Ford-ma-
nufactured chassis while the
superstructure is made by Hobbs
International of Connecticut,
U.S.A. The unit includes a 700-
lb. capacity hydraulic bucket
which can accommodate two
men at a time with their required
tools and equipment.
Designed especially for use at
high elevations, it is most suit-
able here at Lago for inspect-
ion and repair work on tanks,
and other hard-to-reach high
structures. At the same time, it
eliminates the need for time-
consuming scaffold installation
and provides a much faster
operation. Easy to operate, this
"giraffe" has three lever con-
trols at the platform of the
truck to regulate vertical, hori-
zontal and swing movements.
A remote control lever in the

bucket permits one man to po-
sition the tower or boom at
any desired angle.
A special feature is the out-
rigger and boom interlock safety
system. The boom cannot be
operated unless the outriggers
or two "legs" of the "giraffe"
are extended to brace the struc-
ture for a maximum base sup-
port.
Morris Hammond, a represent-
ative from Hobbs International,
spent a week here in December
to check out the unit's hydrau-
lic system and to train a group
of Mechanical personnel who
will be operating this easy-to-
handle heavy equipment. The
training sessions were conduct-
ed at Tank No. 914 in the Tank
Farm area to simulate actual
work situations in the future.

be held from April 25 through
May 2, 1974. This will truly be a
"first" for Aruba and the Nether-
lands Antilles. A total of 105 par-

are expected here at this World

OBITUARY

ESTEFANUS MADURO, who was employed in
Technical Laboratories, Inspection Section,
died at the San Pedro Hospital on January 15,
1974, at the age of 43. Mr. Maduro, who had
almost 19 years of service, is survived by his
widow and four children. He resided at Flamin-
gostraat No. 5, Simeon Antonio.

Norwegian Tanker "Berge Duke",
on her maiden trip, was the first
VLCC to dock at the Lago Reef
Berth this year. The huge tanker
of 279,518 DWT unloaded about
2 million barrels of crude in
about 36 hours. She Is the third
largest ship to dock at Lago and
the sixth VLCC to dock here.

lowed courses in General Equip-
ment & Appliances, Process
Training and Machine Alignment.
A sea lover, Rufo enjoys swim-
ming and snorkeling. He owns
a boat and frequently goes deep-
sea fishing. Other pastimes in-
clude cooking, bowling, tennis
and carpentry. He helped build
his own home at Poos Chiquito.
Married to the former Henita
Faro, they have a six-year-old
daughter. The De Mey family
plans a trip to Colombia on Ru-
fo's next vacation.
Bartolomeo M. ("Bart") Ro-
mano's first assignment after
graduating from the Lago Voca-
tional School in 1952 was as a
Carpenter Helper 'B" in the Me-
chanical Carpenter Craft.
After a break in service in
1954, he was re-employed the
following year in the same sec-
tion where he progressed
to Carpenter "A" in 1960. In 1965
he transferred to the Process
Department where he became a
Pumper in 1966.
Bart subsequently worked as
a Quartermaster on board the
Lago tugs until 1968 when he
was named a Building Trades-
man "A" in Mechanical Build-
ing Trades Section. Bart acted
several times as a Mechanical
Supervisor, most recently in the
Refinery Maintenance Zone.
He has taken Lago courses in
Modern Supervisory Practices
and Critical Path Method.
Bart's hobbies include fishing,
swimming, dancing, playing do-
minos and watching soccer
matches. Married, he and his

wife Lucia have four sons and
one daughter, ranging in age
from 19 to 6. He plans to visit
Costa Rica this year.
Guillermo Arendsz is an LVS
graduate of the 1950 class. His
first assignment was in Mechan-
ical Electrical Section where he

"A" in 1952. He became an
Electrician "B" in 1957.
An Equipment Tradesman "A"
- Electrical since 1961, he acted
several times as an Area Super-
visor assigned to such areas as
the powerhouses, feeder serv-
icing, telephone system and
general refinery maintenance.
Guillermo has taken courses
in Basic Electronics, Telephone
System, Electrical Blueprint
Reading, Power Distribution, and
Critical Path Method.
A HiFi and Stereo enthusiast,
he has a HiFi system on order.
He also enjoys cooking, and
gardening. Guillermo, his wife
Maria and 16-year-old daugh-
ter live in San Nicolas. On his
next vacation he plans to visit
Merida, Valencia and Margarita.
Pedro A. Tromp is a 1954 La-
go Vocational School graduate,
who began as a Craft Trainee
"B" in the Mechanical Pipe
Section where he was promoted
to Pipefitter "A" in 1959.
Pedro, whose title was chang-
ed to Metal Tradesman "A" in
1967, on various occasions act-
ed in the position of Mechanical
Supervisor. Most recently he has
been assigned to field construc-
tion and unit turnaround work.
He has participated in the La-
go Work Directory Programs I
and II and the Critical Path
Method Course. In his spare

games. He and his wife Felepina
and 4 sons (ages 14 to 6.) live at
Kamay, Noord. On his next va-
cation the family plans to visit
Medellin, Colombia.
William O. ("Woody") Wood-
ley enrolled at the former Lago
Vocational School in 1949 from
which he graduated in 1953.
His first assignment was as
a Craft Trainee "B" in the Me-
chanical Garage Section,
where he became a Garage Me-
chanic "B" in 1962.
Between 1964 and 1967, Woo-
dy worked at the SAR Plant and
Edeleanu Plant as a Process
Helper and later as a Control-
man. In 1967 he returned to the
Garage Section where he be-


came an Equipment Tradesman
"A" in 1968. Prior to his recent
promotion, he had been acting
Mecnanical Supervisor in the Ga-
rage, Heavy Equipment and
Transportation Areas.
Woody completed an ICS
course in Automobile Engine
Tune-Up and earned a certifi-
cate as a qualified "Doctor of
Motors" for Diesel Engines from
the Perfect Circle Corporation
of Indiana. He also took Lago's
Process Training and a First
Aid Course.

Woody enjoys house designing
and handicrafts. A music lover,
he played the trombone on the
YMCA Band for over five years.
A member of the National Geo-
graphic Society, Woody each
year heads a "historical" group
to "Jump up" in the Carnival
parades. Woody and his wife
Cora have three daughters, ages
11 to 2, and a ten-year-old son
On his next vacation he plans
to take the family to Disneyland.
