Thrift Plan Withdrawal Privilege Extended


During the Thrift and Annuity
Plans information sessions held
in August, employees were told
that they would have one last
opportunity to make a Thrift
withdrawal within six (6) months
from October 1, 1973. This time
limitation has now been ex-
tended for an indefinite period.
Withdrawable amounts, however,
are still limited to whatever was
withdrawable as of September


30, 1973, plus 2/3 of the 1973
Fund Earnngs and whatever por-
tion of future Christmas Bonus
is left on deposit in the emplo-
yee's Thrift account.

The regular withdrawal rules
of the Thrift Foundation still ap-
ply. An employee becomes eli-
gible for withdrawal six (6)
months after his last withdrawal
date.

Tradesmen Updated on Operations

Of Tapping and Stoppling Machines


To acquaint Mechanical
tradesmen of the Metal Pipe
Section with the latest operat-
ing techniques of Lago's three
hot-tapping machines and two
stopple machines, Leonard Ber-
ry of T.D. Williamson Inc., of
Tulsa, Oklahoma, recently con-
ducted training sessions for ten
days.
The course given to some 20
Mechanical men, including three
supervisors, taught them some
time-saving techniques. The ses-
sions included shop practice and
actual field operations under
Mr. Berry's supervision. Also
films of tapping and stoppling
operations were shown.
Hot tapping is the operation
of cutting a hole in a line for
installing a new connection
without taking the existing line
out of service. It is called 'hot"
because the boring machine
can make a cut into the line
with either cold or hot product
in the line. Stoppling means
plugging a line.
Before installing the hot-tap-
ping machine for drilling, a


stoppling fitting is welded on
the pipe and a valve of the size
of the bore is installed on the
line. The hot-tapping machine
is then placed on this valve for
drilling. When completed, the
pilot drilling bit in the center
automatically holds the cut-out
section (called coupon) and re-
treats with it past the valve
seat. The valve is then closed,
the machine can be removed,
and the new line can be con-
nected.
When a section of a line that
is in service is to be repaired,
then two stopple machines have
to be used at the desired dist-
ance after hot-tapping the line.
With the stopple machines,
plugs are inserted in the line
on two ends and the pipe sect-
ion in between can be repaired,
But before that, a by-pass
is also fitted by using the hot-
tapping machine.
Lago has three types of hot-
tapping machines, which can
make taps from 1/4 inch to 36
inches in diameter. There are

Helper C to Loading Rack
Attendant in 1950 and work-
ed in that position until 1963.
After working his way up
through the Process Helper
categories he was promoted
to "A" Class in 1964. The fol-
lowing year he became a
Controlman.
Mr. Gibbs who is an As-
sistant Operator in Process-
Utilities Division, Powerhous-
es since 1971, will comme-
morate his third service de-
cade on November 20, 1973.

Frans Hernandez' first job
at Lago in 1942 was as
Weigher at the company's
Laundry. Here he subse-
quently worked as a Delivery-
man until his transfer to the
Acid & Edeleanu Plant as a
Process Helper in 1945. Af-
ter a break in service the
following year he was reas-
signed to the Laundry where
he became a Dryer Opera-
tor in 1955. In 1957 he trans-
ferred to Mechanical Yard
as a Yardman.
A Cleanoutman I in Mecha-
nical Cleanout Section
since 1959, Mr. Hernandez
will celebrate his service
anniversary on November 22,
1973.

Joseph L. Park has spent
his entire 30-year career in
the Powerhouses, where he
began as a Laborer in 1943.
Two years later he became
an Assistant Operator. In
1952 Mr. Park advanced to
Operator in the Utilities Divi-
sion, where subsequent pro-
motions made him an Air
Conditioning Technician in
1961, and an Assistant Shift
Foreman Utilities in 1962.
Since 1964 Mr. Park is a
Shift Foreman in Process -
Utilities Division Power-
houses. He will observe his
service anniversary on No-
vember 26.

Ramon Buckley Travels to England

For Startup Activities at Fawley


Presently on a work assign-
ment at the Fawley Refinery in
far-off England is Ramon Buck-
ley, an Operator in the Process-
HDS Division. Accompanied by
his wife, Ifania, and two of his
three children, Ramon left Aruba
on Monday, October 29.
An acting Shift Foreman since
early this year, Ramon accept-
ed the six to nine-month assign-
ment at the Esso Petroleum
Company Limited refinery near
Southampton There, along with
several .loan operators from other
fXXON affiliates, he will assist
in the startup of the company's
Hyd ofiners, MEA Regeneration
units, Sulfur Plants and related
facilities.
The Fawley Refinery is one
of EXXON's largest refineries,
and Ramon is the first Aruban
Process Operator to assist in
process unit startup activities
abroad on a Temporary Foreign
Assignment (TFA).
A Mulo graduate from the St.
Dominicus College in Oranje-
stad, Ramon started at Lago on
September 15, 1954, as a Junior
Clerk in the Process Cracking
Office. He later worked in the
Fuels Division until 1971 when
he transferred to the HDS Divi-
sion, where he was actively in-
volved in the unit startups. Since
then he has acquired much ex-
perience in all phases of HDS
unit operations and mainten-
ance, and has worked both in


the field and as a control panel
operator in the Refining Oper-
ations Center (ROC).
Ramon, who from the begin-
ning took a keen interest in all
HDS plant development, proba-
bly never thought that his expe-
rience and know-how would one
day take him to Europe. At Faw-
ley he can not only be of great
assistance, but he can also ob-
serve the operation of a large
refinery under different environ-
mental conditions.
As this is Ramon's first trip to
Europe, he is sure to gain some
added experience in England:
Winter time with snow and ice,
and the typical English weather
He will also be able to learn
some British traditions, espe-
cially at Christmas time. A noted
athlete here on the island, he
will have several opportunities
in his spare time to see some
good soccer matches and other
sports activities.

Estrella's Candy Wernet Retires

As an Active Football Player


Following a successful foot-
ball career of a quarter centu-
ry, Ocando ("Candy") Wernet,
an Assistant Operator in the
Process Oil Movements Divi-
sion, Clean Oils, retired from
his favorite sports activity on
October 25.
During half-time of a game
between Aruba's football cham-
pion "Estrella" and the A-class
champion "La Fama", he made
his round of the Wilhelmina
Stadium's field symbolizing his
last match and bidding farewell
to the spectators. Later on he
took off his shoes and made
his way to a platform where he
was honored by the Estrella
Team chairman Pedro Croes,
president of the Aruba Football
Association Harry Wever and
Radio Antilliana Director Hubert
Booi.
Candy received many plaques,
trophies and other gifts from the
football association, his team
and friends. This was followed
by Candys emotional speech
wherein he thanked everyone for
their kind gesture and tokens
of appreciation.
Looking back with satisfac-
tion and a little nostalgia on his
long years as a top football
player, Candy nevertheless made
the decision to call it quits, at
least as an active player. One
of his main reasons is the fact
that he is a shift worker, and
his desire to give the younger
generation the opportunity to


advance on the team.
Striking a trim figure at 5 ft,
9 inches tall and weighing 150
Ibs, Candy is now 37 years old.
His love for football began about
the same time he joined the
Lago Vocational School as an
apprentice back in 1950. He
still has pleasant memories of
practicing the game with his
fellow students near the school
barracks during the lunch hour.
This eventually led to his join-
ing the then recently formed
Estrella team, and subsequent
participation in many internatio-
nal competitions.
Candy played in the center
forward, mid-field and inside
right positions. As the first Es-
trella player to form part of an
Aruban selection in 1958, and la-
ter in 1960, as the first to form
an Antillean selection team, he
traveled to Cuba, Jamaica, El
Salvador, Venezuela, Colombia
Costa Rica and Guatemala.
A 1973 Aruba Football Asso-
ciation candidate for the ASU
Sportman of the Year title, Can-
dy owns many trophies, includ-
ing three medals 1 gold, 2
silver received in' the Central
American games.
At Lago, Candy worked his
way up from a Process Helper
D in the Process Light Oils Fin-
ishing Department to his present
position of Assistant Operator
in Oil Movements.
He and his wife, Iselia, and
