1963 as a Ship Dispatcher. Prior
to his May 1 promotion, Felix
had worked as a Documents
Assistant and acted as Super-
visor-Documents in 1966 in the
Oil Movements Division.











I. Maduro

A student of the Savaneta
School, Felix followed a two-
year night course in English
and Arithmetic at the U.N.I.A.
Hall in San Nicolas in 1946. At
Lago he completed an interme-
diate and advanced typing
course in 1951.
An ardent table tennis fan,
Felix is vice president of the
Aruba Table Tennis Association
(ATTA) and was the manager of
the Aruba team at the Carib-
bean Table Tennis Champion-
ship held in Jamaica in 1971.
He is also President of the
Commandeursbaai Club since
1971 He likes stereo music and


enjoys cooking, both indoors
and outdoors.
Married, Felix and his wife
Veronica have four children:
two boys (ages 20 and 14) and
two girls (ages 19 and 18). They
live at Savaneta.

Angel had been an Operator in
Process-Light Hydrocarbons Di-
vision since January, 1966.
Married, Angel and his wife
Aida have a 9-year-old son, and
a 14-year-old daughter. The
Martilia family lives at Mount
Scenerystraat, San Nicolas.
Lee Stanley began his Lago
career on April 11, 1948 as a
Junior Engineer in the TSD-
Process Division. He was prom-
oted to Senior Engineer in 1957,
and became an Engineering
Specialist in 1962. A promotion
in 1964 made him a Supervising
Engineer. Prior to his May 1
promotion, Lee had been an En-
gineering Associate since 1972.
A student for one year of the
Colony High School (1941), Lee
obtained his bachelor's degree
in Chemical Engineering from
the Georgia Institute of Techno-
logy in 1948. The many courses
he followed at Lago include
Fortran Programming, Job In-
strument Training, Job Relations
and Organization Development
Lab. Lee was also an instructor
for a Basic Process Design
Course given in Caracas.
Mainly assigned to process
design for Lago projects at Es-
so Research and Engineering
Co. and Lago, Lee worked on
the new V2AR, the revamping
of Pipestills 5 & 6, Pipestills 9
& 10, and LEAR-1 in recent
years. At present he is assigned
to the furnace replacements of
Pipestills 7-10.

Since 1967, Lee has spent
about half of his time on as-
signments at ERE in New Jersey,
where he met his wife, Ruth.
Lee, who likes boating, par-
ticipated in three Sunfish World
Championships (in Puerto Azul,
Bermuda and Martinique) and
each time successfully stayed
out of the last place. Presently
on vacation, he plans to make
a trip through the Yucatan Pen-
ninsula to look at the ruins
there.
Ireno Maduro started as a stu-
dent of the Lago Vocational
School on September 22, 1952
in IR-Training Division. After
graduating in 1956, he worked
for 3/2 years in TSD-Equipment
Inspection Section. As a Jr. En-
gineering Assistant A, Ireno
worked for 4 years in Mechani-
cal Engineering-Drafting.
In 1964, Ireno became an En-
gineering Assistant while as-
signed to budget type work. He
was named Economics and Plan-
ning Assistant in 1970 and act-
ed several times as senior en-
gineer in 1971 and 1972. In Sep-
tember, 1972 he transferred to
Comptroller's-Financial Section
as a Sr. Accounting Clerk, the
position he held prior to his
May 1 promotion.
A student of the La Salle Col-
lege in Oranjestad, Ireno took
an Industrial Power Distribution
Course at Lago in 1963. Since
November last year, he is fol-
lowing a correspondence Ac-

In his free time, Ireno likes
swimming and gardening. Mar-
ried to Margarita, Ireno has
three sons (ages 13, 9 and 1)
and a 12-year-old daughter.
Irenio Winterdaal was em-
ployed on May 9, 1950 as a
Messenger A in the Marine Of-
fice. Later he worked as a
Launch Attendant and Launch
Helper B, until 1958 when he
transferred to TSD-Laboratory as
a Laboratory Maintenance Man.
He advanced to Lab Mainten-
ance Man A in 1964 and to
Equipment Tradesman A in
1967. Several times in 1970 and


1971 he acted as an Area Su-
pervisor and as a Process Tech-
nician. He was promoted to Jr.
Laboratory Assistant in March,
1972, the position he held prior
to his recent promotion.
In 1963, Irenio followed a
course in servicing electrical
appliances from the National
Radio.Institute At the San Nico-
las Technical School, he took a
256-hour night course in Elec-
trical Installation in 1965.

Irenio and his wife Irma have
a 21-year-old son who is study-
ing medicine at the University
of Nijmegen, Holland, and a 16-
year-old daughter. They live at
Noord Cura Cabai, in Brasil.


Deceased Annuitants
EDWIN V. MILLER died in the U.S.A. on March 25, 1973. He had
been employed in Mechanical-Metal Trades. He retired on
December 1, 1955 after 32 years of service.
LEONARDUS E. BENNE died in Holland on March 26, 1973. He
had worked in the Mechanical-Machinist Department until Jan-
uary 1, 1960 when he left on retirement after 26 years of service.

Aruba Women's Club Holds"Aruba Lin
On Sunday, May 20, some 1500 school children, supervisors and
teachers cooperated in an islandwide "Clean-up Campaign" from
8 a.m. to 12 noon. The "Aruba Limpi Day" was intended to make
the population aware of the growing need for everyone to help keep
our island clean throughout the year. This was the 2nd step of a
four-phase campaign to keep Aruba clean and beautiful. The first
phase was a slogan contest, the winning slogan announced May 15
being: "Aumenta Aruba su Hermosura; Tene'le Limpi, Sin Basura"
(Enhance Aruba's Natural Beauty; Keep it Clean, without Trash).
The other phases will include: Education and Beautification. The
Aruba Limpi Day Committee consists of: Josette du Renard, chair-
man; Margret Bishop, co-chairman; and Ria Bosch, Kay Tekker,
Janet Saladin, Phyllis Yeamans, Linda Fagerquist, Poppy Schouten,
Truus Stracke, Betty Genser, Jeanette Kort, and Beverly Fredrick-
son, members.

Replacement of Pe

At Pipestills 5 &
Groundbreaking work started
in the middle of January this
year on the Petrochem Furnace
Replacement Project at Pipe-
stills 5 & 6. The prime objective
of the project is to improve the
service factor of the units, pro-
vide added flexibility to process
various crudes and the ability
to utilize the full capacity of the
unit when the visbreaker side is
down. To accomplish these ob-
jectives, the project will:
1. Replace existing cylindrical
furnaces with new elevated,
all steel, box-shaped furn-
aces;
2. Add "hot towers";
3. Convert the visbreaker side
on each unit to permit a
crude topping operation.
Also part of the project is a
concrete smokestack rising 350
ft. high to serve the crude fur-
naces of both units, new heat
exchangers and pumps, and a
new substation. Most of the new
facilities are being built north
)f P.S. 5 & 6 along the north
refinery road. Some are built in
the existing units.
The new furnaces will be al-

most identical to those of the
HDS vacuum pipestills while the
"hot towers" will be the first to
be erected in the refinery.
A faster system of installing
refractory used here is the pre-
casting of refractory slabs on
the steel walls before erection.
The project is being carried
out by general contractor Arthur
G. McKee, with assistance of
sub-contractors Ernst Kirchner
for furnaces and Tileman forthe
smokestack.
Estimated to cost $16 million,
the project is scheduled for
completion in the second quar-
ter of next year.
The design specification was
prepared by ERE personnel at
Florham Park where also J. T.
Croes and L. N. Stanley of La-
go's Technical-Process Engin-
eering were assigned on the
project. At McKee's head office
in Cleveland Ken Oliver of Lago
and J. Felt and L. R. Lindeman
of ERE assisted on the project.
Field Engineer at Lago is Bob
Bennett of Esso Research &
Engineering Co. who is on the
HDS-II construction team.


The two furnaces for Pipestills 5 & 6 rising near the north refinery

Miss Vivian Croes, Miss Esso 1973, was guest of honor on May 21 at a luncheon given by
Esso Marketing and the Aruba Esso Dealers at the Divi-Divi Beach Hotel. This was an occasion
for all Esso Dealers to meet Miss Croes, who will vie for the title of Miss Aruba 1973 at the
Holiday Inn on June 2.

Starting May 21 and continuing for several days, some 50 Assistant
Operators, Operators, Shift Superintendents and OMCS Foremen of
Oil Movements Division followed a 3-hour classroom training and
4-hour field training to become familiar with the Lower Crude Field.
Conducted by (left picture, I to r) Hubert Ponson, Chris Schwengle
and Morley Marks, the classes will acquaint participants with the
new lines, pumps, valves and tanks to enable them to efficiently
handle the unloading of very large crude carriers. In the picture at
right is one of the groups that attended the training program.

ALFREDO J. HERRERA died in Aruba on March 28, 1973. He was
59 years old. He worked in the Process Department until
March 1, 1966 when he retired after 26 years of service.
UEL FLEMMING passed away in Anguilla on March 29, 1973 atl
the age of 71. He had been employed in Mechanical Depart-
ment and retired on October 1, 1958 after 25 years of service.
