z ARUBA ESSO NEWS Lago Oil & Transport Co Ltd Editor: A. Werleman Assoc. Editor: Mis L I. de Lange Photographer: J. M. de Cuba Printed by: Verenigde Antilliaanse Drukkerijen N.V. New Process Field Office Opened On HDS Site for Process Personnel Another facility for employees was opened on February 23 when the new Process Field Of- fice on the HDS site was turned over to the Process personnel. Accepting the keys from Project Leader Jose Lade of Mechani- cal Engineering was Assistant Operator Timotheus Ras, the IOWUA Steward for the HDS Di- vision with whose cooperation the plans were developed and carried out. The first prefabricated field office at Lago, the building is fully airconditioned and is prov- ided with carpet tiles and full wall paneling. The 34 ft. long and 16 ft. wide building con- tains a central room in which there are a safety hat rack, a desk with chair, a combination hot plate, sink and refrigerator; a locker and lunchroom which contains 56 lockers, a sink van- ity with two wash basins and mirrors, a large table with chairs, benches and clothes han- gers. There is also an office for the field operator, which has a desk and chair, lockers and a cabinet. The office was erected by Arston, while Virgo installed the decorative wall at the entrance r- t- -^Ll | and did the painting work. In addition, the area around the building was paved, parking stalls were provided in front, and a strip of artificial grass has been laid around the building. Since health standards call for separation of toilet and eat- ing facilities, the utility building was provided at a different lo- cation. Other similar locker and lunchroom facilities will be erect- ed in various process areas in the future. Lago now possesses a new air-powered dredging system, called the Pneuma Dredge. The Pneuma Dredge, featuring effi- cient low cost operation, can perform its function from water- front platforms as well as from floating equipment The Pneuma system was purchased from So- cieta Italiana Ricerche Sfrutta- menti Idrici (S.I.R.S.I.) of Flo- rence, Italy. It consists of three basic units: a pump body made up of three cylindrical chambers that do the dredging. a distributor device that del- ivers compressed air to each of the chambers in turn. a source of compressed air, for which purpose Lago uses two diesel-powered compres- sors with a total supply cap- acity of 1500 cubic feet of air per minute. The Pneuma system is pres- ently mounted on Lago's No. 10 Flat Barge. For lowering and lifting the pump body, Lago's 27-ton crane F-640, which is strapped down to the deck of the barge, is used. The Pneuma pump weighs 14 tons when empty and approximately 25 tons when filled with mixture of 50%/ sand and 50%o water. All connections between the system components are flexible rubber hoses. This, and the fact that there is no need for rigid mechanical connection between the dredge and its base of ope- rations, makes it easy to dis- assemble and transport Except for inlet and outlet valves of neoprene rubber in each dredg- ing cylinder, the pump body con- tains no moving parts. In operation, the pump body is lowered into the water while atmospheric pressure exists in- side each of its cylinders. Water pressure lifts each inlet valve, permitting the cylinders to fill with water as the initial air is forced out through the overhead outlet valve. Upon reaching the bottom to be dredged, the pump body has each of its chambers filled with water, and is ready to begin its work. With inside and outside pres- sures equalized, the inlet valves flap shut. Compressed air from the distributor is delivered to the three chambers in sequence, forcing the contained water up through the outlet valves and into a common discharge line. This pumping cycle is phased from the first to the second to the third cylinder to provide a continuous flow of dredged spoils which may contain as much as 70% sand, silt or mud. The dredge operator maintains contact with the bottom material simply by letting the lifting cable go slack. A depth of only a few feet of water is enough to oper- ate the system. The dredge is used to keep Lago's harbors, including the entrances and exits, at proper depth. It can be effectively used up to depths of 120 feet. Its capacity is 520 cubic yards of mixture per hour. For any single operation, the hole created at the bottom is cone-shaped and may have a diameter and depth ranging up to 10 feet and 12 feet, respectively. The dredged material is pumped into a self- propelled, self-dumping hopper barge which is leased from the Netherlands Harbor Works Com- pany. The capacity of the hop- per barge is 560 cubic yards.
