Luis Anjie began his career
with Lago in September, 1946 as
a Lago Vocational School stu-
dent, after completing the 7th
grade of the Juliana MULO
School. After graduation, he was
assigned to Mechanical-Pipe,
where he advanced through the
Pipefitter categories to Pipefit-
ter A in June, 1957. He was pro-
moted to Pipe Foreman in Oc-
tober, 1957, which title was
changed to Foreman Metal
Crafts in June, 1961. From 1963
to 1966, Luis worked in the po-
sitions of Assistant Zone Super-
visor, Regional Supervisor and
Zone Supervisor. He was prom-
oted to Zone Supervisor in De-

Lago's Public Relations De-
partment has announced that it
will sponsor films for children
this year with the cooperation of
the Island Film Service. From
January through July a different
film will be shown each month in
the districts normally covered by
the film service. Through this
initiative Lago wishes to make a
contribution towards a public
service program aimed at the
youth in our community.
Recognizing the entertainment
value of the films for children,
Lago and the Island Film Serv-
ice have selected only films with
themes appealing to children.
These full-length feature films
are: "Pied Piper of Hamelin",
"Gulliver's Travels", "Adventu-
res of Tom Sawyer", "Alakazam

Division, Luis has gained wide
experience in refinery construc-
tion and maintenance, such as
revamping of Nos. 9 and 10 Pipe-
stills, installation of the LCAR
filters, the clay filters, major
turnaround of the Light Hydro-
carbons units, including the
PCAR, installation of the Light
Gasoil Hydrofiner filters and new
furnace lining for Pipestill No. 7.
Whenever he can, Luis dedi-
cates some time at home to im-
prove his cooking abilities. He

Effective January 1, 1973, Ju-
lian E. (Ed) Thode was promoted
to Compensation Adviser in the
Industrial Relations Department,
and Hedwigis G. (Enrique) Bar-
row was named Accountant in
Comptroller's-Financial Section.
After graduating from Domini-
cus College in 1954, Ed started
as Junior Clerk in Mechanical-
Administration where he pro-
gressed to File Clerk and Junior
Engineering Assistant B and A.
Transferring to PR/IR Depart-
ment in June, 1964, he worked
as Publications Assistant on the
Esso News staff until September
1966, when he won a scholar-
ship under the Lago Educational
Assistance Program to study
Business Administration at Ohio
University in Athens, Ohio.
Ed returned to Lago in Sep-
tember, 1969, after completing
his college education in three
years. He ranked eighth among
1090 students in the College of
Business Administration. He was
assigned to the Compensation
and Labor Relations Section of

Management. He is a member
of the Aruba Jaycees and had
been a director during 1972, and

tilles JC organization that same
year. In his spare time, he acts
as an instructor with the Esma-
car Swimming Club. He is now
training to become a licensed
swimming instructor.
Married, Ed has two daugh-
ters, Agnes (9), and Arlene Julie
(1), and one son, Edwin Gre-
gory (6). He plans to spend his
next vacation in Bonaire.
With his January 1 promotion,
Enrique Barrow has attained
management status. A 1937 gra-
duate of the St. Willibrordus
School in Paramaribo, Surinam,
he joined Lago's Marine Office
as an Apprentice Clerk B in
1947, advancing to Shore Pay-
roll Clerk in 1953. The following

his aquarium and listening to
popular music.
He and his wife Annette have
three sons: Leslie, 13, Elston, 11,
and Duncan, 9. On his next va-

Colombia. They live at Fortheu-
velstraat in San Nicolas.

The new sulfur slaters that went
on stream on December 22,
1972 can solidify approximately
600 long tons of sulfur per day.

Sulfur Slaters, First HDS-2 Unit, Began Operation on December 22


New and up-to-date sulfur sla-
ters to solidify liquid sulfur pro-
duced by the HDS-1 sulfur
plants and later by the HDS-2
unit went on stream on Decem-
ber 22. The slaters, which make
solid and practically dust-free
sulfur, replace the HDS-1 sulfur
flakers located northeast of the
HDS pier.
The slaters are located west
of the HDS pier and down wind
from any process unit. The new
location permitted clearing the
area of the existing sulfur fla-
kers for building HDS-2 units. It
also offers a larger storage area
that can hold approximately
55,000 long tons of slated sul-
fur, stacked up to 50 ft. high.
The skaters are capable of soli-
difying some 600 long tons of
sulfur per day.
The operation of the slaters is
simple. The hot liquid sulfur
from sulfur plants is received in
a tank where it is first air-blown
for primary cooling. The liquid
sulfur is then poured on a 58-
inch wide, 60-ft. long conveyor
belt. While moving on the belt
and spreading to about 'f-inch
thickness, the sulfur passes un-


der four blowers for cooling,
while the belt is constantly wa-
ter cooled. While under the last
blower, the sulfur already begins
to solidify. It is further hardened
to slate form by passing through
a recirculating water bath. The
slate then breaks up into pieces
as it falls onto a yard con-
veyor from where the slates are
transported by means of a
stacker to the storage area.
Foundation work on the sla-
ters began on September 1 last
year. They were supplied by
Vennard and Ellithorpe, who al-
so supervised the construction
by McKee.
In charge of the project is
Dave Schmehr of Esso Research,
who is assigned to Lago's HDS-
2 Project, while Andresito Croes
is the field contactman for the
Process Department and Domi-
nico Marquez for the Technical
Department. Andresito and Do-
minico also trained some 52
HDS-1 process personnel in the
operation of the new slaters.
Work is now proceeding on
the yard conveyor and the
stacker.

dishes and is proficient in pre-
paring barbecues and oyster
soup.
Married, Luis has four sons,
Arturo (17), Michael (15), Carol
(14), and Robert (11). On his
next vacation, he plans to visit
Mexico.
Harmon Quarles started with
Lago in May, 1957 as an Engin-
eer A in Mechanical-Administra-
tion. Transferring to the Main-
tenance & Construction Division
in 1958, he advanced to Assis-
tant Zone Supervisor in 1959 and
to Zone Planner in 1962. In
1968, he was promoted to Pro-
ject Engineer, which title was
changed to Zone Supervisor.
During the HDS-1 Project con-
struction (1969-1971), he was
assigned as HDS Coordinator
and on several occasions since
1965 he acted as M&C Division
Superintendent.
Before joining Lago, Harmon
spent eight years with Tidewater
Oil Company, and was on loan
to the Petroleum Administration
for Defense during the Korean
War as foreign refinery analyst
and in charge of materials allo-
cations. A licensed Professional
Engineer in California, Harmon
holds a BS degree in Industrial
Engineering from Columbia Uni-
versity in New York City. He al-
so held the position of 3rd and
2nd Engineer aboard tankers
during World War II and made
an unscheduled stop of 6 hours
in Aruba in 1944.
A lover of opera music, Har-
mon assembled and installed his


own amplifier and speaker sys-
tem in his home, but is now
switching over to cassettes. On
weekends, he sails his sailfish
with his Aruban hound as crew.
Married, Harmon has two mar-
ried daughters and one grand-
daughter. The Quarles' couple
plans to visit their granddaughter
during their next vacation.
Al Britten joined the company
in 1952 as a Lago Vocational
School student. Following gra-
duation, he was awarded a Lago
scholarship to study in the U.S.
After attending the Marianapolis
Prep School, he enrolled at the
Catholic University of America,
Washington, D.C., where he ob-
tained his B.S. degree in Mech-
anical Engineering, majoring in
thermodynamics.
His first assignment at Lago
as an engineer was to install a
%-inch drinking water line for
Lago personnel. He progressed
to Senior Engineer in October,
1967 and to Project Engineer in
November, 1969. Since 1964, Al
has acted on various occasions
as assistant supervising engin-
eer and supervising engineer.
During his assignments in the
various sections of the Mech-
anical Engineering Division, Al
handled some major projects,
including the revamping of the
PCAR for which he was the co-
ordinator, and the installation of
the No. 2 compressor at GAR-1,
the largest compressor at Lago.
Recently he was charged with
coordinating the microfilming of
Lago's 25,000 drawings.
At Lago Al followed several
courses. Abroad he followed an
extensive training program, which


included a Mechanical Design
Course in Lima, a Gas Turbine
Seminar in New York, a Com-
puter Estimating Training Pro-
gram given by Esso Engineering
at Florham Park from April to
June, 1972, and a Process Eco-
nomics Course in Caracas in
August last year.
A boating enthusiast, Al plans
to buy a boat some time this
year. He also intends to visit
eastern Europe this year.
Ebenezer Halley began his
Lago employment as a Vocatio-
nal School student in Septem-
ber, 1945. After graduation, he
was assigned to the Instrument
Craft, where he progressed
through the Instrumentmen cat-
egories and was promoted to In-
strument Foreman in August,
1961. His promotion to Regional
Supervisor followed in August,
1965. Since 1966, he has acted
as Zone Supervisor in the M&C
Division on several occasions.
He has worked in all three M&C
Zones and also as Mechanical
Training Coordinator.
Some of Ebenezer's assign-
ments in the refinery included
construction of the vacuum dry-
er at the Gasoline Pumphouse,
checking out the automatic
shutdown system for S.A.R.
startup, revamping of Pipestills
5-8, mechanical checkout and
startup of the HDS-1 units and
dumping and recharging of
HDS-1 reactors. At the G.E.
Electronics Park in Syracuse.
N.Y., he familiarized himself
with the closed circuit TV which
he installed at Lago's Marine
Office.


M&C Division
He followed several Lago
courses and completed an I.C.S.
Industrial Instrumentation course.
In his spare time Ebenezer
likes reading, fishing, dancing,
studying electronics and collect-
ing gold coins, of which he has
a collection of 28 pieces.
Married, he has a daughter,
Arlene (15), and two sons, Mar-
ion (13), and Patrick (9).

A 1949 Lago Vocational School
graduate, who began with the
company in September, 1945,
Edgar Diaz was assigned to
Mechanical-Welding, where he
advanced through the Welder
Helper and Welder categories
to Welder A in 1954. He was
promoted to Foreman-Metal
Crafts in 1963 His job title was
changed to Area Supervisor in
1965. Since that year, he has
acted on several occasions as
Regional Supervisor.
Edgar followed several cour-
ses at Lago, and at the Foxboro
Company in Massachusetts, he
attended a 3-week Basic Instru-
mentation Course.
Some major refinery work in
which Edgar was involved in-
cluded construction on the va-
cuum dryer and coalescers and
the Gas Fuel unit, revamping of
the low pressure units and
dumping and recharging of HDS
reactors
Some of Edgar's pastimes in-
clude weightlifting, football and
boxing, working as motor mech-
anic, listening to Colombian mu-
sic, dancing and reading.
Edgar has three sons, Nyrot
(18), Navier (17), and Elvis (15).
