Help School Children Enj For a month or so starting July 7, over 17,600 youngsters in Aruba will have their long school vacation and we will want them to spend their holidays In a fitting and specially safe manner, Indoors or outdoors. It's a time they themselves can help provide a clean environment around the house by eliminating harmful objects, joy a Safe Vacation! such as broken glass and castaway nail- studded pieces of timber. They should also be cautioned against hazards of climbing, falling, slipping or playing with sharp objects. When they are in some outdoor activi- ties, such as camping, hiking or cycling, swimming or boating or on the sports fields, they must be under supervision of adults and the required precautions must be taken for their safety. Some precautions include using life- saving equipment where possible and not letting them play with matches, fires or use gasoline and the like to make fires. Also, excessive exposures to the sun may cause harm to sensitive skin or even sun stroke. 'fF HBy convincing them of the benefit of "safety at play" during these school holi- days, we help mold them into responsible citizens of the future so that they may become more conscious of "safety at work" as well. Unlike other Process unit shutdowns, the shutdowns of any of the twelve boilers of Lago's two Powerhouses is a must every two years. This is regulated by the Antillean Boiler Code. This law stipulates that a boiler must be shut down and inspected once every two years. This must be done to assure it is always maintained in a safe condition. Usually a boiler is shut down for general inspection for about six weeks. In May/June, Boiler No. 2 at Powerhouse No. 2 and Boiler No. 11 at Power- house No. 1 came down for general inspection. The planning of this work was performed by Mechanical's Senior Planner Pedro Arends, while applying the Critical Path Method. He was assisted by Regional Supervisor Ildo Dona- ta as Coordinator. Practically all Mechanical crafts were involved in this work, assisted by Pro- cess personnel and EIS technicians. Part of the work was done by a few local contractors. The bulk of the work, however, was carried out by Mechanical forces work- ing one day and one night shift and included the following work. The Mecha- nical Building Tradesmen erected scaffolds, repaired lining, replaced firebricks and did the painting work. The Boilermakers removed and serviced burners, opened the steam and mud drums and removed the parts inside these drums. They also removed and re- placed hundreds of tubes, serviced soothblowers and filled the boilers with boiler water. A boiler has about 1170 tubes. The Welders seal-welded the superheater elements, inspected, repaired and re-installed these elements. The Cleanoutmen re-installed the steam drum inner parts, repaired the fur- nace floor and washed the tubes externally. The Pipefitters took care of blinding the various lines connected to the boi- ler and removed and re-installed safety and other valves. The Instrumentmen inspected and tested the high and low alarm systems and other measuring devices. Electricians made necessary inspection and re- pairs to electrical equipment and conduits. The Transportation men transported the inner parts of the boilers from the powerhouse to Mechanical Shops, materials from Storehouse, tools from the Central Tool Room, while the Machinists did the required machining work on the boiler parts. The E.I.S. personnel throughout the shutdown made the necessary equip- ment inspection and witnessed testing of the safety valves and the boiler. The Process inspector was in charge of inspecting the work done, firing up the boiler and testing the safety valves before the government inspector per- formed his final testing and gave his approval of the boiler. All this mechanical work was carried out under field supervision of Mecha- nical Supervisors Felipe Tromp (day shift) and Bart Romano (night shift). The most important safety devices on a boiler are the four safety valves on each boiler, which are designed to allow steam to escape if a specific maxi- mum pressure is exceeded in the boiler. Although the boilers normally ope- rate at 410-425 pounds per square inch, during the general inspection the ol- der ones are tested at 690 psi and the new Tosi boilers at 750 psi. Also im- portant are the level gauges for the boiler water. This water (containing less than 10 parts per million of impurities) is purer than drinking water (about 200 ppm) and is tested with chemicals to prevent corrosion of the boiler tubes, (Continued on page 8) e Skills of Many Mechanical Trade: Pipefitters Francisco Maduro (left) and Fernan- do Thielman . Na Mei/Juni, Boiler No. 2 na Powerhouse No. 2 y Boiler No. 11 na Power- house No. 1 a baha pa inspection general. E planeamento di e trabao aki a ser haci pa Senior Planner di Mechanical Pedro Arends, mientras usando e Metodo Critico di Trabao. E Artesanos di Construccion a traha stelashi, drecha paden di forno, a cambia ladrillo y a haci trabao di verfmento. E Boilermakers a kita y drecha e "burners", a habri e drumnan di stiem y di residues y nan a saca e partinan cu tin den nan. Tambe nan a saca afor y reemplaza centenares di tubonan, a drecha soothblowers y a yena e boiler cu awa. Un boiler tin como 1170 tubo. E Weldernan a weld e elementonan di "superheaters", a inspect, drecha y pone back e elementonan aki. E Cleanoutmen a pone back e partinan di paden di stiem drum, a drecha e vloer di forno y a laba banda pafor di e tubonan. E Pipefitters a tapa various linja conectA na e boiler y a kita y bolbe instala valvulanan di seguridad y otronan. E Instrumentmen a inspect y test e sistemanan di alarm y otro equipo me- didor. Electricistanan a haci inspection y drechamento necesario na equipo y lin- janan electric. E personal di Transportacion a transport e partinan di e boilers for di e powerhousenan pa Mechanical Shops, material di Storehouse, herment for di Central Tool Room, mientras e Machinistnan a traha ariba partinan di e boi- lernan. Personal di Inspeccion di Equipo durante henter e trabao a haci inspection necesario y a presencia testmento di e valvulonan di seguridad y e boiler. E Inspector di Process tabata encargA cu inspection df e trabao, pa cende e boiler y pa test e valvulonan di seguridad promer cu e inspector di gobierno haci su test final y duna aprobacion na e boiler. Tur e trabao mecanico aki a ser haci bao supervision di Supervisornan Fe- lipe Tromp (warda den dia) y Bart Romano (warda di anochi).
