Lago President Announces His Retirement Aug. 1


Mr. James M. Ballenger, President
and Director of Lago, has announced
that he will retire August 1, 1976.
Thus Mr. Ballenger completes a dis-
tinguished career of more than 38
years of service to the Exxon Corpo-
ration and several domestic and over-
seas affiliates. During his long ca-
reer Mr. Ballenger has been credited
with an impressive list of contribu-
tions to the Company.
Mr. Ballenger received his B. S. de-
gree in Mechanical Engineering in
1938. He joined the Carter Oil Com-
pany in Illinois the same year as a
Student Engineer, later serving in
Oklahoma and Kansas as a Senior
Petroleum Engineer. He served as
an officer in the U.S. Navy from 1943

Lee R. Raymond Name
Lee R. Raymond, Vice President
and Director of Lago, has been na-
med President and Director of the
Company effective August 1, 1976.
Mr. Raymond succeeds Mr. James
M. Ballenger, whose retirement was
announced June 1, 1976.

Mr. Raymond received his B. S. de-
gree in Chemical Engineering from
the University of Wisconsin in 1960
and his Ph. D. in the same discipline
from the University of Minnesota in
1963. He joined the Exxon Corpora-
tion in Tulsa, Oklahoma as a Research
Engineer the same year. In 1965 he
transferred to Exxon Company, U.S.A.
in Houston as Senior Reservoir En-
gineer, Production Research. From
1966 to 1968 he was Administrator-
Data Processing for the Refining and
Production functions, Creole Petro-
leum Corporation, in Caracas, Vene-
zuela. He returned to Houston in
1968 and shortly thereafter became
Supervisory Analyst, Headquarters
Supply Department.
In 1970 Mr. Raymond transferred
to New York City as Supply Advisor,
Supply and Transportation Depart-
ment, Exxon International. In 1972
he served as Manager, Planning Di-
vision, Planning and Analysis Depart-
ment, and in late 1973 became a Ma-
nager, Trading Division, Cargo Tra-

filiate, Exxon Research and Engineer-
ing in New Jersey. In 1957 he join-
ed the parent company's Refining
Coordination Department in New York
City.
His first overseas assignment began
in February 1962 when he was named
Technical Manager at Lago. Two
years later he became Mechanical
Manager, and in 1966 Vice President
and General Manager. In 1969 he
was named Manager of the Creole
Refining Department as well as Pre-
sident of Lago and in 1971 Manager
of Creole's Refining and Marine
Transportation Department in Cara-
cas. He returned to Lago in his pre-
sent position in 1973.

Assignment With Exxon
Lago's acting Process Manager,
Joe Carroll, has accepted an assign-
ment with Exxon Chemicals as Ope-
rations Department Head of the Bay-
town Olefins Plant.

Joe graduated from the Seroe Co-
lorado High School in 1951 and re-
ceived a chemical engineering de-
gree from the University of Colorado
in 1955. Joe joined Lago in 1962 and

Later Joe served as a Division Su-
perintendent in both the Mechanical
and Process Departments. In Au-
gust 1975, Joe became Assistant Pro-
cess Manager and since September
has been acting Manager of that de-
partment.
Joe will report to Baytown to begin
his new assignment on August 1.

Oystein Dahle Named
Lago Process Manager
Mr. Oystein Dahle, Process Super-
intendent of the Slagen and Vallo re-
fineries in Norway, has been named
Lago's Process Department Manager.
Mr. Dahle expects to begin his new
assignment July 1, 1976.
Mr. Dahle holds an MS degree in
Chemical Engineering from the Nor-
wegian Institute of Technology and
joined the Esso Norway Refirery at
Slagen in 1963 as a Chemical Engin-
eer. In 1968 he moved to New York
where he spent two years on a train-
ing assignment with Exxon Interna-
tional, after which he returned to Nor-
way as Process Superintendent of the
Slagen Refinery. In 1972 he became
Technical Superintendent, and in 1974
he assumed his current responsibili-
ties.

Volunteer Fire Brigade Attend Three-Day Refresher Fire Training Course
Three groups of the Lago volunteer fire brigade and members of the Government Fire Department and ACI Safety and Training Coor-
dinator each attended an Intensive three-day refresher fire training course during the period May 3 June 4. The refresher course
was taught by Lago Fire Chief Jaclnto Harms assisted by the Fire Section personnel at the Company Fire Training Facility

In recognition of the valuable work
of the YMCA in Aruba during the
past twenty years, Lago President
J. M. Ballenger recently present-
ed a donation to the organization
to permit them to continue their
work for the benefit of Aruba's
youth. Accepting the donation
check in Mr. Ballenger's office
on behalf of the YMCA was Secre-

HDS Division Superintendent Joaquin Croes opens the Refinery Basics Course given
to a group of new HDS personnel (at right) last month. In the program STIP training
material developed jointly by Exxon Company and Exxon Chemical Company for refinery
and chemical plant employees was used. Adviser in the program was Andreslto Croes,
one of HDS experienced shift foremen.

Returns to Lago With Degree

In Chemical Engineering
On June 8, 1976, Romulo Hernan-
dez returned to Lago after obtaining
his B.S. degree in Chemical Engin-
eering from Tulane University in New
Orleans in May this year. Romulo
studied with a Lago Educational Pro-
gram (LEAP) scholarship and left La-
go in August, 1972.
He joined Lago on November 11,
1969 as a Trainee II in Technical -
Laboratories and held the position
of Tester A when he left for the U.S.
Romulo was a MULO--B graduate
of the St. Augustinus College in San
Nicolas and obtained the diploma
of "Bachiller en Ciencias" after at-
tending the "Liceo Juan Vicente Gon-
zalez" in Caracas from 1965 1968.
He also followed the Pre-Employment
Preparatory Program at Lago in 1969.
Romulo has been initially assigned
in the Light Ends/Offsites Section of
Process Technical Division, where
his initial assignment is in technical
contacting of the Utilities area-Lago's
steam and power generating facili-
ties.
During his four-year stay in New
Orleans, Romulo was accompanied by
his wife Joan Helen.
