Julio Jansen Honored with Royal Distinction

For 20 Years of Active Football on April 29


Among the twenty-two Aruban ci-
tizens who were conferred a royal de-
coration on the occasion of Queen
Juliana's birthday April 30, was Julio
Jansen of the Mechanical Contract
Development Zone.
Juchi, as he is popularly known,
was presented with the Gold Medal of
Honor attached to the Order of Oran-
ge-Nassau at the residence of the Lt.
Governor Jossy Tromp on April 29.
This honor went to him for his almost
20 years of active football, all of them
on the R.C.A. team.
Juchi joined R.C.A. as a junior
member in 1945. After becoming a
senior football player in 1950, he won
such a good name in local and Antil-
lean football that he was almost al-
ways on either the Aruba or Antillean
delegation team to play in football
championships abroad. As such, he
participated in championship games
in Guatemala, Haiti, Mexico. Costa Ri-
ca, Honduras, Venezuela, Colombia,


Cuba, Guyana, Suriname and Cura-
cao. In 1960, Juchi won the much-
coveted title of Sportsman of the Year
awarded by A.S.U.

Jack Collins Transfers to Exxon U.S.A. June 1


Lago's Assistant Technical Mana-
ger John F. (Jack) Collins has accept-
ed an assignment with Exxon Re-
search Engineering Company in the
U.S.A. effective June 1, 1976. Mr. Col-
lins will be leader of ERE's Techni-
cal Advisory Team for the startup of
Baytown Refinery's Fuels Expansion
Project. He will be leaving at the end
of this month to assume his new du-
ties at Baytown, Texas.
Mr. Collins joined Lago in May 1975
after transferring from Exxon Re-
search and Engineering Company, N.

J., where he had been Manager of the
General Engineering Division in the
Petroleum Department. As Assistant
Manager of Lago's Technical Depart-
ment, he has had direct managerial
responsibility for Process Technical
Services, Project Development, Me-
chanical Engineering, MCS and Labo-
ratories Divisions as well as the Ener-
gy Conservation Group.
During his assignment in Aruba, Mr.
Collins has been very active in com-
munity work. He has served on va-
rious committees of the Kiwanis Club,
and as a YMCA member has taught
basketball in the young adult athletic
program He was recently elected
Vice Chairman of the Esso Club, and
has been active in sports such as
bowling, tennis, golf and softball.
On his new assignment, Mr. Collins
will be accompanied by his wife June,
daughters Jeanne, a 7th grade stu-
dent at the Seroe Colorado School;
and Paula, currently a high school stu-
dent in the U.S.A. The Collins' have
two other children: Fran, who is at-
tending Carnegie Mellon University
in Pittsburgh, and John, who is study-
ing at Drew University in Madison.

Trevor Connor Joins Lago's
Mechanical Engineering Div.
In Technical Dept. May 3
On May 3, 1976, Trevcr Connor join-
ed Lago as an Engineer in the Tech-
nical Department's Engineering Divi-
sion. Trevor recently graduated from
California Polytechnic State Univer-
sity with a Bachelor's Degree in
Electronic Engineering.
He is a graduate of A. De Veer
School in San Nicolas and obtained
his HBS-B diploma from Colegio Aru-
bano in Oranjestad. He studied at
the University under a Lago Scholar-
ship Foundation grant during his four
years of study.
Trevor has been assigned to the
Instrument and Electrical Engineering
Section where he will be able to anply
his background in solving the day-to-
day problems associated with the
measuring and control instruments
used in the refinery.
Trevor is a brother of A.L.M.
Connor, the Machinery Maintenance
Zone Supervisor.

Always loyal to his team, Juchi
nevertheless "retired" from active
football in 1970 to give other upcom-
ing football players an opportunity to
prove themselves. He is currently a
trainer for the R.C.A. team where he
teaches his pupils the discipline and
drive necessary for good sportsman-
ship.
Although hurt many times in this
rough and exciting sport, Juchi never
lost enthusiasm for it. He now plays
on the veteran team "Inter" which re-
gularly organizes football matches to

At Lago, Juchi began his 33-year
Company career as an LVS appren-
tice. After graduating he worked as
a Draftsman in the former Technical
Division. At present he is a Mechani-
cal Supervisor in the Contract Deve-
lopment Zone. He and his wife Oli-
via a secretary in the Oil Move-
ments Division live in Lago Heights.

Adds Longer Life, Improved Efficiency to Boiler 1


There are various equipment at La-
go which must have certain portions
renewed periodically for the sake of
maintenance and appearance some-
times, but mostly, to increase effi-
ciency in operations. The renovation
of Company equipment requires care-
ful economic study, much planning,
proper timing, and the availability of
the latest material and techniques in
industry.
One such equipment which recent-
ly underwent a sort of metamorpho-
sis or physical alteration is
Boiler No. 1 at No. 2 Powerhouse. In
the renovation work, the outer brick
walls of the fire box of the boiler
were completely replaced for the first
time in over 30 years. This time,
however, pre-cast panels of castable
refractory were used instead of the
customary fire bricks. Preparations
for the work began when the boiler
was shut down for a scheduled gene-
ral inspection.
One of the oldest of Lago's twelve
boilers, Boiler No. 1 was built early
1943 and placed in service that same
year. Since that time the boiler walls
have undergone several minor re-
pairs.
However, now the boiler fire box
will have all-new walls of steel-backed
panels, cast with 4"-layer of castable
insulation and a 3"-layer of castable
refractory a highly heat-resisting
material. The rectangular slabs, which
range from 4X5 ft. to 3X4 ft., were
cast on steel plates over rows of V-
studs or longhorns double steel
prongs to firmly hold the refractory
material against the steel casing. To
assure that the casings will remain
flat, they are reinforced with angles
on the reverse side.


About sixty panels were required
to cover the two sidewalls which are
21 ft. high and 14 ft. wide, and the
burner wall which measures 21'X19'.
The burner wall was cast in place
over the 10'X11' burner plate, while
the edges of the opening around the
burners were molded with a special
plastic refractory material to better
withstand the intense heat.
Unlike the thousands of bricks in-
stalled in the conventional way simi-
lar to cement blocks, the pre-cast pa-
nels were installed with the help of a
winch and welded into place.
The new panels will add longer life
to the boiler and simplify maintenance
work. When portions of the walls de-
teriorate, the panels will be cut out
with a blow-torch and replaced with
a new pre-cast panel. Now, instead
of a heavy build-up of fire, bricks in
all shapes and sizes, only a couple
of 100-lb bags of refractory will be

Fabrication and installation of the
panels was carried out by the Antil-
lean Civil Engineering Works contrac-
tors in a combined venture with Wes-
car Company, as sub-contractors.


From May 10 to 21, Lago gave a
training program to its harbor and
mechanical personnel on the use of
Lago's new equipment for recovery
of potential offshore oil spills. This
is the Vikoma oil recovery system ma-
nufactured by British Petroleum con-
sisting of a 23-ft. fiberglass boat,
called Seapack, with a 1500 ft. Sea-
boom and Seaskimmer. The system
is deployed by Lago tugs.
The new equipment will improve
Lago's response capability in the
event of an offshore oil spill. In ad-
dition, this improved response capa-
bility is in keeping with the objectives
of the Caribbean Mutual Aid Group
(CMAG), of which Lago and other
Antillean oil companies are members.
The CMAG members are committed
to provide assistance in the event of
an oil spill in the area. In fact, re-
presentatives from Curacao Oil Ter-
minal and Bonaire Petroleum Com-
pany also attended the Lago training
program.
The Vikoma equipment is in use
worldwide and is designed especially
to contain and collect oil spills in
the open sea. The Vikoma recovery
system works as follows: The Sea-
pack, with the deflated boom inside,
is towed to the spill. The boom
is then released from the Seapack
and automatically inflated. The spill
is enclosed by the boom, the ends
are joined and the oil is contained
within the boom for recovery by the
skimming equipment.

Supervising the entire project was
Angel Every of Mechanical Contract
Execution Division.
Charged with the design work were
John Hodgson and Hilton Hassell of
Mechanical Engineering Engineer-
ing Technical Services.


The course participants received
lectures, reviewed films and took part
in practical demonstrations on the
operation and maintenance of the Vi-
koma equipment. A 4-man team from
British Petroleum Company, the ma-
nufacturer of the equipment, were
responsible for the training. Course
Coordinator was Isaac Chin of Lago's
Process Technical Services Division.
Facilities already in use at Lago
to combat offshore oil pollution in-
clude permanent shoreline booms
and skimmers. Dispersant spraying
equipment are available on the tugs
Oranjestad and San Nicolas and the
launch Yukuri. The Government tug
Arikok has also been equipped with
similar dispersant spraying equip-
ment in order to have a broader
coverage of the coastline.
