soon belong to the past now that all
data on stock items used in the refi-
nery have been converted into micro-
fiche reading. In the microfiche sys-
tem, large numbers of printed pages
from the catalog have been photo-
graphically recorded on a greatly re-
duced scale on flat 4'&"x57/s" films.
Similar to a slide, which requires a
projector for viewing, the microfiche

James A. Brooke Assumes Overall Coordination

Of Lago's Industrial Security Activities March 1


Effective March 1, 1976, James A.
Brooke assumed responsibility for the
overall coordination of the Company's
industrial security activities Mr.
Brooke has transferred from Lagoven
(formerly Creole) in Venezuela.
Mr. Brooke comes to Lago with
over nineteen years of experience in
law enforcement both in the U.S.A.
and as a foreign police adviser for
the U.S A Government in Japan, Tur-
key and San Salvador, and in indus-
trial security, fire protection and safe-
ty functions for various affiliates of


Exxon. His foreign assignments were
with Esso Standard Libya, Inc. from
1967 to 1972, and more recently as
Industrial Security Superintendent for
the Western Division of Lagoven in
the Bolivar Coastal Fields, Zulia State.
A graduate from Michigan State
University, East Lansing, Michigan in
1956, Mr. Brooke received his B. S.
degree in General Police Administra-
tion from the School of Criminal Jus-
tice. He has also attended and co-
ordinated various security, safety and
fire prevention courses and seminars

The policy of this Corporation, as stated by the board of directors years ago
and reaffirmed by the board at its September 1975 meeting, is one of strict ob-

We do care how we get results. We expect compliance with our standard
of integrity throughout the organization. We will not tolerate an employee who
achieves results at the cost of violation of laws or unscrupulous dealing. By
the same token, we will support, and we expect you to support, an employee
who passes up an opportunity or advantage which can only be secured at the
sacrifice of principle.

Equally important, we expect candor from managers at all levels, and com-
pliance with accounting rules and controls. We don't want liars for managers,
whether they are lying in a mistaken effort to protect us or to make themselves
look good. One of the kinds of harm which results when a manager conceals
information from higher management and the auditors is that subordinates
within his organization think they are being given a signal that company poli-
cies and rules, including accounting and control rules, can be ignored when-
ever convenient. This can result in corruption and demoralization of an orga-
nization. Our system of management will not work without honesty, including
honest bookkeeping, honest budget proposals, and honest economic evalua-
tion of projects.

It has been and continues to be Exxon's policy that all transactions shall be
accurately reflected in its books and records. This, of course, means that fal-
sification of its books and records and any off-the-record bank accounts are
strictly prohibited.

Burnham School in Greenfield, Mas-
sachusetts, and ten-year-old Hilary is
completing her school term at Cam-
po Verde School in Tia Juana before
coming to Aruba. Mr. Brooke's hob-
bies include fishing and swimming. A
radio ham, he plans to join the Aru-
ba Amateur Radio Club.

formation on the more than 40,000
stock items at Lago. Because the
entire catalog has been reduced to a
mere 27 microfiches each contain-
ing over two hundred 81,"x11" pages
- much time will now be saved when
seeking data for ordering material.
Instead of poring through the va-
rious sections of the huge catalog to
find a particular item, an employee
now refers to the bluish color micro-
fiches after having consulted the al-
phabetical index file to obtain the
stock item number. Each of the films
bears the beginning and ending sym-
bol number block at the top and an
index page in the lower right hand
corner for quick reference. Once the
correct microfiche has been selected
it is introduced into the Vantage 1
Reader and by operating a switch, the
page indicating the stock number and
catalog description of the material to
be ordered appears on a screen. Fur-
ther information on quantity and price
of material can be requested via a
CRT which is tied in to the Materials
Real Time System.
Microfiche reading is a modern,
practical system which will simplify
ordering of stock items, eliminate ma-
nual updating of the catalog and the
costly printing of catalog pages. All
catalog pages are now kept up to
date on the master tape of the com-
puter which is periodically converted
into microfiches at the Esso Research


Charged with the conversion of the
parts catalog to the microfiche sys-
tem were MCS Commercial Section
personnel who were able to produce
magnetic tapes from existing pro-
gram for ERE. Coordinators for
this work were Earl Cook of MCS and
Albino Yarzagaray of Materials Divi-
sion, while W. L. Philips of Materials -
Catalog Section ordered the Vantage
1 Readers and gave instructions on
their use

After leaving Company service in
September 1964, Rudy joined the Aru-
ba Chemical Industries where he be-
came an Accountant I in 1969 In De-
cember that year, Rudy was reem-
ployed as an Accountant in Lago's
Contracts Auditing Section during the
HDS Project.
A 1951 MULO-A graduate of the Ju-
liana School in Oranjestad, Rudy fol-
lowed ICS courses in Practical and
General Accounting, Lago-sponsored

A Disabling Injury Feb. 22
On February 22, 1976, Lago emplo-
yees reached the 1,000,000 mark of
actual hours worked without a dis-
abling injury since September 27,
1975, a period of 148 calender days.
Previously, a 1,000,000 manhour mark
reached on November 10, 1974 -
accumulated up to 2,295,038 actual
hours during a 293 calendar day pe-
riod and was broken on April 23, 1975.
The longest period ever covered with-
out a disabling injury since 1951 was
from July 7, 1971 September 6,
1972, a total of 428 caledar days with
an accumulation of 3,448,269 man-
hours. A record of 6,520,829 man-
hours was achieved during December
8, 1956 to June 5, 1957.
