The steam leaks throughout the refinery are not only a major source of energy waste, but their noise also contribute to- wards creating an unpleasant work- ing environment. Lago's Energy Conservation Group with the help of operating personnel makes frequent surveys to ascertain that these leaks are kept within manageable limits which now range from 100-250 Even at these levels, the overall cost is high considering that steam loss from an average leak is costing NAFIs. 1000 per month Most leaks occur due to constant high pressures against weak areas in the piping sys- tem as the result of external cor- rosion/internal erosion Left un- attended, these leaks can multiply and reach excessive proportions in actual steam loss and eventually re- sult in major steam line repairs Lago's Maintenance Group is con- stantly on the lookout for steam leaks in the operating units, but shutting off these steam lines for repairs can generally be accomplished only when the unit is out of service for turnaround, or when the steam sys- tem can be bypassed Because unit downtime is costly, for the past two and a half years Lago has been con tracting the services of Furmanite Technicians to repair a large majority of our steam leaks The Furmanite technicians accomplish this in a unique way Without taking equipment out of service or without bypassing steam lines, they can terminate the leaks by injecting a special compound directly unto the leaking flange or valve packing gland These specially for- mulated compounds are designed to harden on exposure to heat and form an effective permanent seal With this application, more steam leaks can be arrested within a shorter pe- riod of time, while at the same time permitting continuation of normal equipment operations The contracted services, perform- ed by Furmanite about ever quarter. keeps leaks down to a manageable number of 100-150 This allows the Lago Maintenance Group to concen- trate on repairs to systems which can be temporarily closed off Normally two Furmanite technicians work un- der the direct supervision of Lagos Maintenance Group who coordinate (Continued on page 5) ARUBA ESSO NEWS Fox boro course, taught by Dan Jus- ka (r), gives parti- cipants better un- derstanding of pre- cision instruments in the refinery. He has followed several training programs at Lago, including Process Design, Kepner-Tregoe and Oral Presenta- tion Courses and the Refinery Eco- nomics Course in Caracas, and a John Zink Burner Company Seminar in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Russel holds a BS. and Master's degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Tulsa, Okla- homa, where he also obtained his Ph. D. in October 1976. A student under Lago's Special Educational Program for Outstanding Students, Russell is the first scholarship reci- pient to return to Lago with a doc- tor's degree. Having gained computer program- mer experience at part-time jobs during his college years, Russell easily adapted to his first assignment at Lago as an Engineer in Technical - MCS Control Systems Section of MCS Division in November 1976. Russell has worked on several projects at the Refining Operations Center (ROC) which included off-line unit simulations and control pro- grams on the Lago Hydrogen Plants and Crude Light Ends units. His January 1 promotion is in recogni- tion of his work in the Process Con- trol Section of PTS. He has follow- ed several Lago-sponsored courses and also attended a Control Systems Engineering Course and a Distilla- tion Control Course in Foxboro, Mas- sachusetts, and a Process Control Seminar at ERE, Florham Park. Milo has been with Lago since September 1952 when he joined the Lago Vocational School as an apprentice. After graduation, he served on the Lago Police force one year, before joining the Utilities Di- vision. After working in a variety of Basic Instrumentation Course Highlights Use, Application of ControllMeasurement Devices To get a better insight of the nu- merous instrumentations used to control, measure and analyze in re- finery process operations, forty- eight engineering and instrument employees were selected to attend a one-week Basic Instrumentation Course this month. Because a large variety of Foxboro Instrumentation is widely used in the refinery, the cour- se was conducted by Mr. Dan Jus- ka, a representative of the Foxboro Instrumentation Company of Fox- boro, Massachusetts. The participants in the course were divided into two groups, one attend- ing the 29-hour course during the week of January 14, and the other twenty-four attendees during the week of January 21. The course was held in Classroom 2 of the Ad- positions in this division, he was promoted to Operator in 1976, and since then has acted several times as Process Technician and until re- cently, as Shift Supervisor. Last year, Milo completed an eight- month overseas assignment with the Exxon Chemical Company at Bay- town where he was charged with the responsibilities of Utilities Operator during the Company's Olefins Plant Startup. In this capacity, Milo be- came the first Aruban Lago emplo- yee to assist in the start-up of a petro-chemical plant in the U.S.A. Milo's responsibilities in the Utili- ties Division are mainly in the area of electrical distribution and steam generation. He has followed a Stationary Fireman's Course and Power Plant Engineering Course, both from ICS, and a Process Training Course at Lago. ministration Building. Following a one-hour introduction to the course, which covered mea- surement and control terminology, the employees were taught the fol- lowing subjects: Process Measure- ment & Transmission, Control Valve Engineering, Introduction to Auto- matic Control & Control Hardware, Advanced Control Techniques, and Principles of Digital Control. In his presentations, Mr. Juska used video- tapes and slides. r* .."! .- At the end of the course Mr. Loren Haag of Mechanical Engineering presents the certificates. Here Edna Farro of the Technical Department receives hers. The course was sponsored by the Project Development Division and was coordinated by G.T. "Joe" Venables, a Supervising Engineer in this division. The participants - most of them new employees or re- cently graduated engineers, were from the Project Development Divi- sion, Mechanical Engineering Divi- sion, Process Technical Services Di- vision and Energy Conservation in the Technical Department, Mechani- cal Instrument and the Process - HDS, Fuels and Utilities Divisions. I Steam Leaks (Continued from page 2) ,re repair effort to insure that maxi- mum benefits are achieved. Steam leaks resulting from system failures are inevitable, but an effect- ive repair effort can go a long way to control! this source of energy waste. Employees can help in this effort by ieportirg plant steam leaks to their superiors, as well as questioning those practices which appear to be waste- ful of steam Common Sense Some workers are models of calmness, coolness and carefulness on the job, and they have got the accident-free records to prove it. But comes quitting time and it's operation "big switch". At home these very same workers strain backs lifting furniture, cut fingers peeling potatoes, stand on weak, unsteady chairs to look for something on a closet shelf. It just doesn't make sense for a person to be a conscientious safe worker on the job and then expose himself to all kinds of risks the rest of his waking- hours. The very same safe habits and attitudes that protect the worker on the job can keep him healthier and happier off the job, too. That makes for a good life. This DOES make sense. / Holes are drilled In a Sflange before repair- ing a steam leak by 1- Ininjecting the sealing S compound.
