Professor Brockhaus Teaches Employees Skill

In Communication in Oral Presentation Course

Currently attending an Oral Pre-
sentation Course in the Administra-
tion Building are forty-eight emplo-
yees who have been nominated by
their departments to improve their
skills in speech communication. The
course, which began October 23 and
will last through November 9, is taught

H. H. Brockhaus

Professor Brockhaus is no stranger
to Lago. In 1972 he taught an
"Effective Speaking" seminar here
which was attended by approximately
sixty employees who greatly bene-
fited from the course in their daily
business communications. A Pro-
fessor of Speech in the University
Extension and Professor of Communi-
cation Arts in the College of Letters
and Science of the University of Wis-
consin in Madison, Professor Brock-
haus holds M.A. and Ph. D. degrees
from the University of Wisconsin.
In his 30-year career as a Professor
of Speech, he has taught many
courses at university centers as well
as on the Madison campus, and has

conducted several adult classes in
Madison and neighboring communi-
ties and also special classes for nu-
merous organizations in the U.S.A.
Besides participating in a consider-
able number of institutes and confe-
rences over the years, Professor
Brockhaus has also written several
textbooks. He has held several po-
sitions in State and National organi-
zations and is a member of four pro-
fessional fraternities. He has receiv-
ed recognition from several associa-
tions and is listed in "Who's Who in
America", vol. 35, 1968-69 and in the
Directory of American Scholars, Vol.
2, 5th edition in 1969.

fessor at the University of Wisconsin,
he continues teaching "Oral Commu-
nication in Business" which includes
"Oral Presentation", on a part-time
The 18-hour Oral Presentation
Course being given at Lago is de-
signed to provide instruction and
practice in planning and presenting
oral reports effectively. To insure
individual instruction, the number of
participants have been divided into
four groups of twelve members, each
group attending six three-hour ses-
sions. The course requires class
members to participate actively in the
sessions by preparing and giving oral
reports on subjects familiar to them.
Their speeches are videotaped and
audio-recorded and played back for
group evaluation. In reviewing the
oral presentation of each participant,
emphasis is placed on good organiza-
tion, clear presentation, meaningful
language, appropriate material and
proper use of visuals.
