July 12, 1978 marked one year that Lago employees worked without an "on-the-job" disabling injury. This period represents close to 2,500,000 manhours. Thanks to the high level of safety awareness and the concerted efforts of all Lago employees, this is the se- cond important achievement in safe- ty accomplished during the past year. The first milestone this year was on May 5, 1978 when we completed 2,000,000 manhours of work without a disabling injury, or a total of 297 consecutive days without an on-the- job injury. The previous milestone of 2,000,000 manhours was achieved on July 26, 1976. With the cooperation of all emplo- yees, other significant records can be achieved this year to make 1978 a "Year of Safety". Our safety goals are : 1. To break Lago's "all-time" re- cord of 428 calendar days without a disabling Injury ON THE JOB the second week of September. 2. To obtain 3,000,000 manhours without a disabling "on-the- job" injury the first week of October. 3. To work one full calendar year January 1 thru De- cember 31 without a dis- abling "on-the-job" injury - a record still to be achieved in Lago's history. Employees' safety goals should not be limited to their jobs. Let us all take "job" safety awareness to our homes and make our off-the-job sa- fety performance as good as our sa- fety performance at Lago. I Donald J. Lago MechanicallContractor Employees Trained On the Use of ScottAir-Pak Breathing Equipment On June 28, Mechanical Depart- ment employees began attending one-hour training sessions on the use of the Scott Air-Pak breathing ap- paratus with pressure-demand hose- line unit. The first training ses- sions, which were attended by 239 employees including supervisors - were conducted by Safety Inspec- tor Bill Geerman of Employee Rela- tions Safety Section, in the Lunch Room of the Mechanical Shops. For most of these employees, the training session was a refresher, since they had previously seen a demonstration of the equipment in the field when Lago acquired the units two years ago. For new em- ployees, it was an opportunity to learn to use the breathing apparatus in areas where toxic gases or vapors might be present. Attending the sessions in groups of 15 men each time, the men were given a brief introduction on the sa- fety features of the pressure demand hoseline unit, and a leaflet containing instructions on its use. While volun- teers demonstrated how the breath- ing apparatus should be assembled, donned and operated, the Safety In- spector gave a running account of each step. Five similar sessions were also held for contractor emplo- yees, safety inspectors and supervi- sors. Used only in planned jobs, the Scott Air-Pak Hoseline unit provides employee with up to eight hours sup- ply of fresh air. It is more often used when removing and installing blinds from H2S carrying lines, during exca- vation work and in other locations with possible contaminated atmos- phere. Fresh air is supplied from a cylinder containing 2000 p.s.i. of com- pressed air connected to a pressure- demand hose line unit linked to a har- ness and face mask worn by the user. The unit can be worn with or without an egress or reserve cylinder at- tached to the harness. The cylinder is to be used in emergency situations should the supply hose become da- maged or defective. The egress cy- linder contains a 3-minute supply of fresh air, giving the employee enough time to escape from a hazardous en- vironment.
