Llder di Proyecto pa - conversion di pompnan dl boiler pa awa, Calton Jackson, to observe em- pleadonan di Mechani- cal Department ponlen- do e ultimo toque na a motor electric na Hy- drogen Plant Boiler Feed Water Pumps at H2AR, H3AR Undergo Changes to Save Energy, Reduce Waste & Noise As part of a continuous refinery- wide energy conservation program, two steam-driven boiler feed water (BFW) pumps at Hydrogen Plants 2 and 3 (H2AR) and (H3AR) have un- dergone changes to electric motor drivers. The net result reduction in refinery steam consumption and noise abatement. This project, de- veloped last year, had as its primary objective the reduction of surplus low pressure steam in the refinery. The change made on the first unit H3AR - late 1976, paid off the investment in about five months. The second unit H2AR was completed during the unit turnaround this month. Since there are two boiler feed water pumps at each plant, the spare steam-driven pump was left un- changed. This spare pump is de- signed to take over automatically using steam power should an emer- gency arise due to power failure or low pressure in the water discharge line. Before the conversions, the steam turbine drivers utilized 410 Ibs of steam pressure and exhausted 30 Ibs of steam. The low pressure steam, being surplus, was vented, resulting in wasted energy and noise pollution. The conversion to electric motor drivers decreases steam con- sumption by about 6,600 lbs an hour of 410 Ibs of steam pressure at each of the two Hydrogen Plants. In addi- tion, the excessive noise level in the area has been reduced to a minimum. The switchover of each facility took place approximately eight weeks during scheduled turnaround of the units. It involved dismantling and removal of existing turbine drivers with about 60 feet of associated steam lines at each unit, and the modifications of the existing found- ations to permit trenching and in- stallation of conduit lines, new switchgears and setting the electric motors in place. The incentive for this driver con- version came out of a unit energy survey done by the Energy Conser- vation and Environmental Control Group. Project leader for the con- version is Calton Jackson of Techni- cal Project Development Division. Charged with the dismantling work and installation of new power supplies was N.V. Unicon, while Lago forces did the installation of the motor and pump alignment work. S Blume Promoted (Continued from page 5) in Industrial Management. While in college, Raffy worked for some time as a cameraman at the University of Akron, and assisted as a Dutch and Spanish teacher at the Berlitz School of Languages in Akron and Pittsburgh. Here at Lago, Raffy has followed the Professional Orientation Program, the Critical Path Method, Process Economics and Kepner-Tregoe courses. Raffy, who is single, is a sports car fan. In his leisure hours, he likes to play tennis, watch baseball and football games and work in the family's "cunucu" in Paradera. The steam-driven spare pump remains unchanged for use in case of power fail- ure or other emergencies. Pompnan diA wa pa Boiler Na Hydrogen Plant 2 y 3 Cambia Pa Conservacion di Energia Como part di un program conti- nuo di conservation di energia den center refineria, dos pomp cu ta im- puls& pa steam y cu ta manda awa pa boiler na Hydrogen Plantnan 2 y 3 (H2AR y H3AR) a ser cambid pa traha cu motor el6ctrico. E resultado neto reduction den consume di steam den refineria y supresion di boroto. E proyecto aki, desaroya anja past, tabatin como obheto principal e reduction di steam cu presion abao cual ta surplus den refineria. E cambio hacd ariba e promer unidad H3AR durante ultimo parti di 1976, a paga bek e inversion haci den mas of menos cinco luna. E steam cu presion abao, siendo surplus, tabata ser sacA den aire, resultando den energia desper- dicia y polucion di boroto. (ContinuA na pagina 8) 100 Se member 1977 ARUBA ESW NEWS I'V /^ - - Oliver G.
