9 Schools, 130 Students Present 59 Projects at 1977 Aruba Science Fair


March 26, 4 p.m., marked the open-
ing of the 7th Science Fair held in
Aruba since 1967. The one-week
Science Fair was opened in Sociedad
Bolivariana by Lt. Governor F. J.
Tromp in the presence of invitees,
school representatives and students.
In his welcoming speech, A S F
Chairman P. van Niel thanked the
schools, students and teachers for
their participation and Lago for its
financial support to the Science Fair.
Representing Lago was Technical
Manager T. R. Clapp, who emphasized
the importance of science subjects at
the schools. On behalf of Lago, he
pledged participation in and support
to the Science Fair in the future.
In his speech, Lt. Governor Tromp
asked Mr. Clapp to convey to Lago's
management the Government and
community's appreciation for the con-
tinued support of Lago in stimulating
technical study through the Fair. He
also asked for an ovation for the par-
ticipating students.
The winners were announced by
ASF Secretary Elias Fingal and the
prizes were presented by the Lt. Go-
vernor, who fired off a rocket to open
the Fair officially.
The guests and public subsequent-
ly had the opportunity to see a total
of 59 projects developed by 130 stu-
dents from nine schools. The pro-
jects included : 4 individual and 4


group projects from MTS, HAVO and
VWO schools (Category I); 8 indivi-
dual and 9 group projects from the
two LTS schools (Category II); and 15
individual and 19 group projects
from the MAVO, ETAO and Home Eco-
nomics schools (Category III).
The jury who awarded the 16 prizes
consisted of Messrs. Chenco Yarza-

Vice President John Gibbs opening

Tradesmen Taught Better,
Efficient Ways to Operate
Gisholt Balancing Machine
Recently a group of thirty trades-
men, including Machinists, Electri-
cians and Instrumentmen, was given
a special training program on the ope-
ration and maintenance of Lago's Gis-
holt balancing machine which is lo-
cated in the Machine Shop.
This Gisholt Masterline Balancer is
used to balance rotors of electric mo-
tors and turbines and pump impellers
electronically. By adding the right
weight at the proper spot as indicat-
ed by the sensivity meter, the rotors
can be balanced to cause a minimum
of friction and vibration on their bear-
ings, thus eliminating or minimizing
the possibility of damage or burn-out
of bearings and assuring more effi-
cient operation.
The Gisholt machine can handle ro-
tors weighing from 50 to 1000 Ibs. and
up to 6 ft. long and 55" in diameter,
while it can operate at speeds from
300 to 1500 revolutions per minute.

Twenty Employees Learn More on Problem

Solving, Decision Making in 1-Week Course


To provide management members
and supervisors with more knowledge
of the steps to be followed in pro-
blem analysis and decision making
and for analyzing potential problems,
some twenty participants took a one-
week Kepner-Tregoe (General) Cour-
se from March 28 through April 1,
1977.
Held in the Administration Building,
the all-day course was under direc-
tion of Jorge Abreu and Rudolfo Li-
lienfeld of Kepner-Tregoe Associates
Inc. of Princetown, New Jersey.
In opening the course, Lago Vice
President John Gibbs pointed out
that sound decisions are the result
of organized and systematic ap-
proach to problem analysis. The


course was closed at the end of the
week with remarks by Vice President
Gibbs.

From April 4 through 12 Theo Rij-
ckaert, a Process Technician, Peter
van Ingen, an Equipment Inspector,
and Willem van Laren, General Advi-
sor-Training Coordinator from the Es-
so Rotterdam Refinery visited Lago
to get familiarized with Lago's vis-
breaking facilities.

The orientation program is in con-
nection with the new Visbreaking Pro-
ject now being built at the Rotterdam
Refinery.

During their visit to Lago, the group
was given an outline of Lago's vis-
breaking operation, including shut-
down and startup procedures; deco-
king procedures and furnace control;
unit and equipment inspection; and
unit operation in general.

The group received explanations
and lectures from Process Technical
Services Division and Process person-
nel and were given field trips by Si-
mon Wever and Erwin Tejeehut of the
Process Department. Others involved
in the orientation program included:

chine Shop by Corbin Weiss of the
Gilman Engineering Company. Whe-
reas the tradesmen previously used a
check list of 45 steps for determining
the compensating weight and exact
spot to install the weight, with the
new balancing system this check list
has been reduced to about one half.
The course was also videotaped
for future use.

New Process Employees Attend OrientationlRefinery Basics Course


Twelve new employees of the Pro-
cess Department began a five-week
Refinery Basics Course following a
one-day orientation course on April
1. Addressing the group that day
was Process Manager 0. Dahle.
They attended classroom instruc-
tion from April 4 through 15 under di-
rection of Process Training Coordina-
tor/Instructor Dufi Kock in a Labora-
tory classroom. During these two
weeks they learned the fundamentals
of Mathematics, Pressure, Fluid Flow,
Temperature and Heat, Heat Transfer,
Chemistry, Installation and Removal
of Valve Packing and Pumps. They
also attended a one-day Fire Training
program under direction of J. Harms
and received a general outline on Oil
Movements operations by Loreto Kock
and on refining operations by Marti-
nus Leo.

training program on the various pro-
cess units from April 18 to May 6 con-
ducted by Area Trainers. As part of
this program, the participants learned


about Basic Tanker Design, Tanker
Cargo, Ballasting and Bunkering Ope-
rations, Loading Arms operation and
their design limitations from Captain
Fellingham.
