E.T.- A LOCAL WAY OF LEARNING

Title: DIRTY AIR

Author: Ruth Emery
Eulalie R. Rivera Elementary School

Grades: 2-3

Concepts: Disciplines:
2. Ecosystem 1. Science
8. Values and Attitudes 2. Language Arts
11. Individual Acts 3. Social Studies
12. Stewardship

Objective:

The students will observe the quantity of dirt and dust that is in the air as it accumulates over a five day
period.

Rationale:

Since dirty air may not be obvious to a child because it often cannot be seen, this experiment will prove that
it does exist.

Materials Needed:

Two sets of five each 3 x 5 plain white cards each numbered one through five Vaseline
Scotch Tape

Direction /Activity:

Using the white cardboard make two sets of cards with five cards in each set numbered from one to five.
Spread a layer of vaseline on each card.
Tape the cards with the vaseline side exposed to the air to your classroom windows, five inside and five
outside.
At the end of the first day, collect the number one cards; the second day, the number two cards and so on.
Have the children observe the dirt particles that have collected on the vaseline coating.

Ask the children to note the kind, size, and shape of the dirt particles that collect on the cards.

Have them compare those collected on the first day to those collected on the fifth day.
Discuss with children the smell or origin of such dirt; where it comes from and how it is carried? How does
it affect human breathing?
You may also demonstrate how dirty our air is by washing an outside window pane thoroughly and
observing the dirt that collects just within a few days.
