McKenzie Beverly Penn
1930 1995
McKenzie Beverly Penn, known to family and friends as
"Mack," was born on February 19, 1930 in East End, Tortola,
British Virgin Islands. He was the first of twelve children born
to Carris and Clothilda Penn.
Mack received his formal education at the East End Primary
School, the only educational facility in the district at the time.
After he left school as was the case with many of the young
men of the area, the sea became his life. From East End he
joined his father sailing and fishing and became an
accomplished seaman at an early age.
When Mack migrated to St. Thomas he had no difficulty
finding employment as a seaman. He was one of the best
sailors of his generation and was sought after by some of the
most notable yacht owners and game fishermen in the U.S.
Virgin Islands. For many years he sailed the Caribbean and
Atlantic north America, South America and Central America.
The voyages became more adverturesome, sometimes peril-
ous. When an employer decided to go around Cape Horn
again, Mack, with full knowledge of what that entailed, issued
his classic "Not with Mack" rejection. That was a turning point
of his career as a seaman.
From that time on he limited his sea activities to setting and
pulling fish pots close to home. This he continued for several
years until filing health forced him into retirement.
Mack was seriously ill at home following surgery when he
leanred of the sudden death on May 8 of the sister that fol-
lowed him, Myrtle Penn Lewis. Four days later, on May 12,
1995, with his devoted son "Kenzie" at his side, he was called
home.
May he find safe harbor with his Lord and Master.
