Anthon Monsanto, affectionately known as "Bones" or
"Blooker," was born on May 22, 1925, on St. Thomas, and was
the only child of Idalia Vessup and Albert Monsanto.
He was distinguished in two areas: seamanship and the culi-
nary arts. He spent the major portion of his life as a seaman sail-
ing throughout the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic and Pacific
Oceans. He was one of the most knowledgeable persons on the
many cays and islets of St. Thomas.
As a chef, his mastery in the preparation of numerous native
dishes was renowned and many persons sought his services.
A well known resident of Smith Bay, he took ill in Novem-
ber, 1985 and on February 18, 1986, the master seaman and
chef, reached his journey's end.
