Cyril Michael, Presiding Judge, U.S. Attorney for the Virgin
Islands, Clerk of U.S. District Court of the Virgin Islands, Interpreter,
Law Clerk, Secretary, Musician, U.S. Navy Retired, Teacher, Legion-
aire, Husband, Father and Grandfather, was born to Andreas and
Wilhelmina Michael on January 22,1898 in St. Thomas, Danish West
Indies, and received his early education at the Catholic Parochial
School.
Music was his first love and very early Cyril Michael learned to
play the organ, piano, violin and trombone. His enlistment into the
U.S.. Navy, like many other Virgin Islanders who were members of
"Adams' Juvenile Band," resulted in the establishment of the first
U.S. Navy Band whose membership was comprised entirely of black
men.
During his enlistment, Cyril Michael pursued courses in Secretarial
Studies, Harmony Counterpoint and Advanced Composition with the
University Extension Conservatory of Chicago, Illinois, and later
taught music and secretarial courses.
