Melvin Decente Jackson was the fourth of eight child en
born to the late Anthon and Delphine Jackson. He was born on
St Thomas on June 30,1938.
As a child, he attended Sts. Peter and Paul Elementary
School, later on transferring to the Charlotte Amalie High School
from which instituon he graduated in June of 1958.
As a young man, Melvin (more affectionately called
"Bart" by most of his relatives and close friends) was very ac-
tive in sports. He was an excellent baseball pitcher. He pitched
for the CA.H.S. varsity team during the late 1950's. He later
played single A and double A baseball, where he pitched for
such teams as the Falcons and Braves. He participated in
several all-star baseball teams representing St. Thomas against
other Caribbean islands.
After a brief period of service in the U.S. Army, he stu-
died Electrical Engineering at Chicago Technological Institute
in Chicago, Illinois.
He was married in the Spring of 1966 to the former Edris
Foy of St. Thomas. This union produced three children Melvin
Jr., Michael and Amy. Melvin loved his family dearly. He was
a good husband and devoted father to his children. A few days
before he died he reminded them how much he loved them. As a
father and bigger brother, he did not hesitate to exercise disci-
plinary measures when necessary.
His life has touched the lives of many of us who knew and
understood him.
After a brief career of service to the aty of New York, his
health began to fail. On Monday, January 20, 1986, shortly after
sunset, he was called to retire from this earthly existence. He
leaves to mourn his wife, Edris, his four children, and a host of
other relatives and friends.
May he be granted the serenity of a peaceful rest, in Jesus.
