Lelas Maria Xenia Forde Gifft began her sojourn through life on
December 6, 1921. She represented the very first bundle of joy to
her proud parents, the late Volcey Forde and the very gracious
Eugenie Maria Tranberg Forde, herself, midwife to a substantial
percentage of our St. Thomas population. In her earlier years, Lelas,
as she was affectionately called, attended the Catholic Parochial
School and later attended and graduated from the Charlotte Amalie
High School.
Lelas one day directed all of her attention to the man to whom she
would devote the rest of her life, Mr. James Gifft, Sr., and following
their betrothal and marriage, were the proud parents of five children
with whom they enjoyed a very closely knitted family relationship.
To her children Lelas was a devoted mother, confidant, companion,
counsellor, and a good friend and buddy.
Mrs. Gifft managed the family's business for years in their operation
of "Gifft's Grocery and Meat Market" at its Seventh Day Adventist
Street location. She became affiliated with the St.Thomas Business
and Professional Women's Club (BPW) and served as its president
from May 1978 to April 1979. She was an active member of the
Catholic Daughters of America (CDA) and the Friends of Denmark
Organization.
Lelas will be best remembered for her extraordinary qualities of
gentleness, humility and an ever present sense of peace of mind
which she exuded.
Lelas Maria Xenia Forde Gifft departed this life peacefully on
Sunday, December 2, 1979 at 2:45 A.M.
May God grant eternal rest to her in her sojourn on his closer side.
