Born July 2, 1914 in thayer, NMissouri to Homer and Clara
Hackett. qheyoungestoftwosisters, DorthaattendedMessick
ighSchoodin Memphis, Tennessee andgraduatedin 1931. She
continuedhereducation at the UniversityofTennesseeSchooCof
nursing, graduating in 1935 as a reisterednurse.
In the summer of 1935, she began her nursing career as a
private duty nurse in Pampa, Texas. In the faf of 1936, Dortha
moved to Cleveland, Ohio as a staff nurse at the Lareside
Hospital InJuy1937, she movedto9SwYorkCity andworked
at the 'Wilnarkarer Hospital. 'ie ving in g ew 9ork she
first met her husband offifty years, Macon Bernman. Shortly
after her marriage in June of 1943, she began working at the
Veterans mi nstrationAsin i w9York. Inthespringof
1945, Dortha and Macon moved to Cheyney, Pennsylvania
where they both workedfor the Sunnycrest Farm, a home for
dependent and negectedchildren.
In 1950, the Berrymans moved to St. Thomas, Vigin
Islands where Dortha continuedher nursing career with the VI
Department of Heath; retiring from the Community Health
aNrsing Service in the Iate 1970s. In May 1957, James 3
Beryman, her only son, was bom.
In 1970, Dorthafoundedthe Volunteersfor the Visuaf
Handicappedin St. homas and continued her digent service
with various community organizationsfor many years after her
retirement.
In 1975, Dortha received the Nrsing Practice Award
thiswasgivento herfor her eemparyperfoance, dedication,
and untiring devoted service to humanitarian causes in this
community.
Dorthas favorite hobby was writing poetry. She pub-
ished herfirst wor(s of poetry titled 'GirTaok with proceeds
going to the Centerfor Independent Livig. Her secondwork
titled l inning Girs, is currently being assembledand wi be
pubishedwith afproceedsgoing to the Councion .1cohiosm -
St. liomas.
