KEN STEVEN BERRY
August 10, 1973 October 20, 1988
Ken Steven Berry was born on August 10, 1973 in St.
Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, the second child of Richard
and Lorraine Berry.
He attended All Saints School from pre-kindergarten
through the fifth grade, from there continuing at Sts.
Peter and Paul Cathedral School. At the time of his sudden
passing, he was a sophomore and a member of the school's
quiz bowl team, "The Brain Waves." So diligent, so bright,
so competitive a student was he that he qualified to be on
the team as a ninth grader, a year earlier than usual.
His teachers report that he was not a person who had to be
prodded to observe the rules of any game or enterprise of
which he was a part. In fact, this aspect of his personality is
confirmed by his cub scout den mother as being evident even
in those tender years. At that time, in her observation, Ken
eagerly and willingly followed the Cub Scout manual, step by
step, in order to earn the requisite badges.
It was this natural bent of mind, combined with inordinate
curiosity and interest in the world about him, plus a spirit of
competition, that made him such an outstanding student and
member of "The Brain Waves."
His range of interests was not limited to intellectual attain-
ments. He loved sports spearfishing, boating, rugby, foot-
ball skirmishes, baseball and hockey. He was an enthusiastic
fan of the Montreal Expos and was rooting for Oakland in
the World Series.
Ken's academic achievements and his hobbies were only
part of his pursuits. He enjoyed working during the summer
months in the field of refrigeration and air conditioning, his
father's business, and had planned to pursue it as a career.
In short, Ken enjoyed life and for this reason many people
were drawn to him. As indicated in an article in St. Thomas'
leading periodical, many of his peers and teachers stepped
forward to attest to the fine qualities that made Ken Steven
Berry a very, very, special person.
