Abstract: |
The Enid M. Baa Library of the Division of Libraries, Archives and Museums (DLAM) has acquired an extensive collection of memorial booklets since the early 1970's for U. S. Virgin Islands residents. Booklets are usually more than 10 pages long and give details of the life and family connections of the deceased. |

CLIFFORD LORENZO BENJAMIN was born on July 15, 1915 on
St. John. Bie was the third child of Eleazer and Nellie Benjamin.
He was a memberof the class of 1935 of the Charlotte Amalie High School,
where he was an outstanding athlete.
He was a member of the Sea Scouts and Tau Beta Alpha Fraternity.
After graduation he went into business. Like many other successful bus-
iness men of that era, he worked closely with the late J. Antonio Jarvis, not
only in the newspaper field but in a business that was known as The Art
Shop Photo Studio, a pioneer venture in the field of photography.
He was also a successful farmer and was prominent in the field of live-
stock to the extent of importing special breed of animals to improve the
existing standards. He served as District Supervisor for The National Associ-
ation for Soil Conservation.
Continuing in the field of business he ventured into the area of transporta-
tion by land and finally established BENJAMIN & SON and later BENJAMIN
TRANSPORT CO. which was primarily cc nci ned with cargo service through-
out the entire Caribbean area.
He was a very civic minded individual and made not only financial contri
butions but gave generously of his time when possible to ma ly local organize
tions.
A lover of horses, he was a strong supporter of the "sport of kings,"
horseracing, throughout the entire Virgin Islands and for several years he
served as President of the St. Thomas Turf Club and trained such horses as
"Sunflower," "Girlfriend," "Sweetheart," "Kelso" and "Campus Filley"
many of which established records and won trophies for their outstanding
performances.
He married the former Rita Adams on Januat 1, 1940. They have four
children, Joycelyn, Clifford Jr., Alexis and Elmo.
He is survived by several brothers, Ansel, Alpheus, Chambile, Ricardo, An
tonio, and Luther, one sister Emma Watson, an Aunt Idona Vanterpool and
two Uncles. Francis and Thomas Beniamin, and several grandchildren,
nephews and nieces.
