THE eagerly awaited Guy-
anese production, "Evening
of Indian Music" came off at
the Cultural Centre on Sat-
urday night, with Carifesta
well in its second week.
The Indian show filled
about three-fourths of the
Centre's theatre and proved
to be among the most colour-
ful of the host country's con-
tributions to the festival.
The performance centred on
Per Ajie, the first indentured
woman to set foot on Guy-
ana soil, with an over-
romantic commentary writ-
ten and recited by Rajkuma-
rie Singh and choreography
and solos by Gora Singh.

as well as may be expected,
even though there were no
fireworks written into their
dances. Their audience ap.

ward for the long hours of
rehearsal they must have
put in.
"Evening of Indian Music"
was not without its flaws. A
hymn to Per Ajie led by so-

capture the Indian musical

tion, whispered helplessly,
very often becoming quite
inaudible.
Gora attempted the scourg-
ing and crucifixion scenes
from the rock opera "Jesus
Christ, Superstar," but his
choreography, graceful
though it was and dripping
with elegant lines, did not
even try to appreciate the in-
effable rock element of the
music.
The lighting effects here
did manage some redemption.
Gora's white costume stood
out in eerie spotlight while
shifting colours on the back-
drop and a white cross of
light hovering way up pro-
vided a kinetic pulse not ex-
tended to the dance itself.
And on the credit side,
singer Gobin Ram was never
more in control of his voice,
crafting kawalis and gazel-
les with much emotion. The
tabla players excelled in


their intricate drumming,
never slipping in the preci-
sion furious tattoo demanded
by Gora Singh as he struck
a teeming carillon from the
200 bells swathed on his
ankles.
The ritual and festival
dances were staged in col-
ourful costumes and lighted
candles in the Diwali dance
lent an additional glow to
that sequence.
Gora's elegant Kathak
dance, muted and unhurried
and expressive at first and
then quickening into a whirl
of abandon, evoked splendid
forms of Mogul opulence.
"Evening of Indian Dance"
is to be repeated at the Na-
tional Park this evening
where a much larger audi-
ence than that at Saturday
night's show .will get the op-
portunity'of taking in this
worthwhile Guyanese Cari-
festa contribution.
